Lost Tarantula Grounds Planes
Delta spokesman Brian Kruse said Atlanta-bound Flight 1525 was scheduled to take off from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport at 7 p.m. Wednesday, but the pilot decided to ground the plane after baggage handlers discovered the loose arachnid in the cargo hold.
Kruse said the pilot wanted to ensure the baboon tarantula was the only one loose on the plane.
"They were able to capture it, and they contacted the handler" to ensure there hadn't been any other tarantulas in the same cage, Kruse told the Baltimore Sun.
"We have to make the safe decision on that -- being bitten by a tarantula is not a good thing," CNN quoted the pilot as saying.
The passengers were moved to another aircraft, which departed about three hours behind schedule.
A passenger told WRDW-TV a flight crew member told him there were a total 750 tarantulas on board the plane and most of them had gotten loose, but Kruse said only the one spider was ever free and it never left the cargo hold.

Raju's independence remains strong
In the United States, Independence Day is celebrated July 4, commemorating the colonies’ declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. And while Americans celebrate, they are not the only ones who hold this particular Independence Day dear.
Across the world, at the Wildlife SOS elephant rescue center in India, an elephant named Raju celebrated his first year of independence this year on July 4. The party included a jumbo-sized cake for Raju and an anniversary card signed by the staff and other rescue elephants. In addition, the trail the elephants love to walk each day was christened Raju’s Freedom Trail.
Although the day was happy, Raju’s past is full of sorrow. Taken from the wild when he was only a baby, he was sold to different owners dozens of times and forced to live as a begging elephant on the streets in India. Malnourished, living on garbage and repeatedly beaten in public, Raju had never known freedom until actions were set in motion one year ago.
A glimmer of independence
Raju’s path to freedom began when undercover footage of the severe cruelty he suffered was recovered and Forest Department officials began working to obtain a court order transferring Raju to the Elephant Care and Conservation Center.
The rescue effort began July 2, 2014, leading to a standoff between Raju’s owner and the Wildlife SOS team. On July 3, at 4 a.m. Raju was finally loaded onto a truck and transported to the Elephant Care and Conservation Center. Upon his arrival, Raju was backed off the truck and, after a grueling 45 minutes, the last of the chains were finally removed. For the first time in 50 years, Raju was free and he wept as the last chain came loose.
Raju’s long road to recovery
On July 5, 2014, a full medical inspection was performed on Raju to determine the degree of his suffering and physical disability. Raju’s body was covered with hundreds of wounds, many were years old and had become infected when they were not allowed to heal properly. A diet of garbage had left him malnourished and frail, and a serious wound to his right hind leg caused him to limp badly.
Caregivers worked to treat his wounds and started him on a nutrition program, introducing him to new, nourishing foods such as watermelon, jackfruit, bananas, pumpkins, sugar cane and healthy green fodder. Raju gulped them down by the bucket savoring the healthy treats.
A year of firsts
Since Raju was given freedom, he has enjoyed numerous firsts that were previously denied him.
On July 15, 2014, Raju entered a pool for the first time and remained there for hours. On July 28, he was introduced to the Herd of Hope, a group of rescue elephants already living at the center. This allowed him to spend time with his own kind and learn skills denied him by his capture. “The biggest challenge that Raju faces is simply learning how to be an elephant,” says Steve Koyle, Wildlife SOS volunteer and elephant keeper at the Phoenix Zoo. “He’s been told what to do, beaten and neglected for so many years. Now Raju has the options of swimming, dusting, scratching, foraging and sleeping on big dirt beds under the stars. He now has freedom of choice.”
Other elephants are still looking for their freedom
By May 5 of this year, veterinarians had determined that 95 percent of Raju’s physical wounds had healed. But while Raju grows stronger every day on the path to recovery, the outlook is not so positive for others of his kind.
An estimated 2,000–3,000 elephants remain bound and abused in India every day. Many of these elephants were stolen from their mothers as babies and have been beaten into submission as begging elephants or temple elephants.
Every day, Wildlife SOS works to find and save more elephants like Raju in order to show them a better life and free them from cruelty. The sanctuary has 18 elephants now but many more are still suffering across the country. To learn how you can help free elephants suffering in servitude and give them their own independence day, visit Wildlifesos.org or donate to Raju’s Rescue Fund, which will be used to rescue and care for abused elephants in India.

Apple Festival at Faith Church
Pen Argyl, PA, October 2015: On Saturday October 3, 2015 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Faith United Presbyterian Church will hold its 21st annual Apple Festival. This long running fall event has been the benefactor of one of the largest apple crops in recent memory. Our long time Slate Belt lovers of homemade apple pies and famous apple dumplings are in for a real treat because of this bountiful crop. So to celebrate this year’s Festival, the food menu will include all those old time favorites like turkey and beef barbeque, our baked beans, and the ever popular macaroni & cheese dish.
This year the Festival Committee didn’t forget any of the popular salad offerings and made sure they were on the menu. The large harvest also allows us to feature homemade apple sauce from an old and trusted Faith Church recipe that will tempt you into purchasing a bowl to taste what old time goodness is about. Don’t forget that all of the Festival’s homemade apple pies and dumplings (with or without raisins) go fast and will only be available for take out on a first come, first served basis. So get there early for the best selection. Reverend Ruth Ann Christopher added, “I particularly can’t wait to try that old time apple sauce recipe. It’s really great that there was such a large crop of apples this year so it could be made.” Join Faith Church on Saturday on October 3rd and enjoy the first fruits of this outstanding apple harvest season made into some of the finest desserts. There will be so many delicious apple offerings that you may have to visit the dessert area more than once. Remember that calories are not counted at any of Faith Church’s festivals so you can make that extra trip and enjoy dessert without guilt. Annual Harvest Festival
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm celebrates their 41st Annual Harvest Festival on October 10th and 11th, 2015. This year’s theme is “Green is our Valley – Homesteading.” Many families in the United States are becoming interested in doing more for themselves. They are learning about everything from raising chickens in their backyard to tapping maple trees to make their own syrup. Everyone is interested in buying local produce or growing it on their own. Solar energy, windmills and other energy saving methods are topics of interest. People are having bee hives or using cloth napkins, dehydrating their own fruit or making a compost pile. It all sounds like the Quiet Valley way of doing things. Thinking green, being green, keeps it green. We hope with this year’s theme visitors will learn something they can take home and use that will make them a little more self-sufficient and our world a brighter shade of green.
In addition to demonstrations and displays dealing with the theme, there will be plenty of traditional skills and heritage crafts demonstrated such as spinning, weaving, broom making, scrapple making, apple butter making, basket making, candle making. There will also be plenty of folk entertainment, good country food, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating, a quilt raffle, pony rides, horse drawn wagon rides, one room schoolhouse presentation, outdoor brick bake oven and much more. The New Jersey Frontier Guard will portray French and Indian War soldiers trekking through the farm. The Civil War Encampment is always a favorite at Harvest Festival. The 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. G Re-enactors will portray the drill and everyday life of soldiers in the 19th century giving visitors a special glimpse into local history. DETAILS - Harvest Festival offers visitors of all ages two days of old-fashion fun. All funds raised will help support the mission of our nonprofit educational organization. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is located 3 miles south of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania off of Business Route 209. BHS Author Coming to Bangor Lirary
(BELOW IS A STORY THAT APPEARED IN THIS PAPER AUGUST 4, 2015)
Bangor High graduate Karen (Shoemaker) Katchur has published The Secrets of Lake Road (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press) . Karen Katchur -- Official Author Website .
In her book, Jo has been hiding the truth about her role in her high school boyfriend’s drowning for sixteen years. Every summer, she drops her children off with her mother at the lakeside community where she spent summers growing up, but cannot bear to stay herself; everything about the lake reminds her of the guilt she feels. For her daughter Caroline, however, the lake is a precious world apart; its familiarity and sameness comforts her every year despite the changes in her life outside its bounds. At twelve years old and caught between childhood and adolescence, she longs to win her mother’s love and doesn’t understand why Jo keeps running away.
Then seven-year-old Sara Starr goes missing from the community beach. Rescue workers fail to uncover any sign of her—but instead dredge up the bones Jo hoped would never be discovered, shattering the quiet lakeside community’s tranquility. Caroline was one of the last people to see Sara alive on the beach, and feels responsible for her disappearance. She takes it upon herself to figure out what happened to the little girl. As Caroline searches for Sara, she uncovers the secrets her mother has been hiding, unraveling the very foundation of everything she knows about herself and her family in this riveting novel that is impossible to put down and hard to forget.
Karen Katchur holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University and a Masters of Education degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University. She lives in Eastern Pennsylvania with her husband and two children. She enjoys running and tennis and playing with her flat coat retriever puppy, Tucker and her cat, Carly.

Technology can be wonderful!
garywilliamsdmd.com
I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing.
Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making.
I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile.
It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry.
Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com.
