This information will get you up to speed quickly. We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at [email protected] and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us. Contacting individual board members would be helpful. Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great. The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to announce the recipients of their 2017 Preservation Awards in the following categories:
The Architectural Award is presented to an individual who has performed an exemplary act in saving or conserving a historic building, place or artifact where restoration is authentic to preservation. This will be presented to Mr. Charles Evans. Mr. Evans restored his residence, an old farmstead, that was built around the 1790’s, to usable and workable condition. He restored all three floors and rebuilt the original porch on the house that had been missing for 80 + years. He built the porch how it was originally with mortis and tenon structure. A picture window, that was installed in the front, was removed and replaced with original style windows resulting in the stone façade being reworked. The original fireplaces, inside the home were repointed and the working walk-in fire place completely restored. The stone butcher house and stone spring house were repointed in addition to the reworking of the chicken coop. The culmination of the project was the rebuilding of a post and beam German bank barn, that had been destroyed by fire twenty years ago. The original stone foundation was able to be rebuilt and utilized. The Initiative Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in promoting and preserving Slate Belt heritage through in-kind actions. This will be presented to Mr. Mike Piersa. Mr. Piersa initiated the project to save, preserve, interpret and publicly exhibit a particular Flory Manufacturing Company “Slate Hoist” that was made in Bangor. He identified the hoist and arranged for its removal when a Pen Argyl quarry ceased operations. He researched its background in original Flory records, arranged for its transport, interviewed its former operators, maintained it in working order, wrote proposals for its public display and rallied various civic groups and volunteers to construct a pavilion for it to be installed in Bethel park in Bangor. All of his actions were made without seeking compensation. The Special Focus Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in saving or conserving traditions or a body of knowledge. That individual who contributes to education information via documentation. This will be presented to Mrs. Janet Wilson. Mrs. Wilson has assembled and preserved a collection of local vintage clothing and has shared it with the public through fashion shows, exhibits and mural research. For over 50 years, she has acquired clothing dating from the 1850’s through the early 2000’s. Many of the articles tell a family story that gives meaning, context and connections to the people who made and wore the garments. She has generously shared her collection and information through shows for not-for profit causes benefitting the Bangor Library, the Bangor 1975 Centennial, the Bangor 125th Anniversary, the Slate Belt Heritage Center Angelo Polo Slate Room, Pen Argyl Grace Methodist Church, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Sodality and the Monroe County Historical Association, among others. These awards are to acknowledge individuals who have performed acts that promote and preserve the culture and heritage of the Slate Belt. For their efforts in these acts, the Slate Belt Heritage Center will be honoring them at a public ceremony on Thursday, June 15th @ 7:00 PM at the Center. Also being honored will be Mrs. Carolyn Bray who for over 18 years contributed her time and talents to the Cornish room at the Heritage Center. Along with her husband, Harry, Carolyn produced the Center’s introductory video, “Sassafras County”, she offered far-seeing advice and gave a voice to the under-represented members of the community, worked thousands of uncompensated hours at the Center and at home where she laid out and coordinated the printing of our Welsh, Cornish, and African American books, the Heritage Center banner, brochures, invitations and made virtually all of the historic photo reproductions seen throughout the museum today. She also contributed reproductions for the St. Luke's Health Center on 512. Mrs. Bray has since stepped down as a Trustee for the Center. Hope UCC Trip to Sight & Sound

Free Workshop on Locating Grant Sources
Librarians at Northampton Community College’s (NCC) Mack Library will be offering a free workshop for representatives of nonprofit organizations who want to learn more about locating grant sources on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Rd., Bethlehem Township. The workshop will provide an overview and demonstration of grant resources included in the Foundation Directory Online database, as well as an opportunity to use the database. Slate Belt Futures exhibit
Slate Belt Futures exhibit will be on display at the Slate Belt Heritage Center, May 14 to June 4th. Design students from the University of Pennsylvania visited the Slate Belt during the fall semester of 2016 and completed projects that re-purpose former industrial sites for future use. The plans show many parts of the Slate Belt and consider safe and innovative uses for familiar places. The sites include quarries, flood plains, fens, railroad beds, and other areas in Slate Belt municipalities. The public can see the projects at the Heritage Center, 30 North First Street, Bangor, PA on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-3 pm or by appointment (610) 599-4993 [email protected]. Free class will help develop career exploration skills Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer a New Choices career decision-making class from Monday, May 15 through Thursday, June 8, Mondays through Thursdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in classroom 627 at the Fowler Family Southside Center, 511 E. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 15Soviets begin Afghanistan withdrawal - 1988 More than eight years after they intervened in Afghanistan to support the procommunist government, Soviet troops begin their withdrawal. The event marked the beginning of the end to a long, bloody, and fruitless Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. In December 1979, Soviet troops first entered Afghanistan in an attempt to bolster the communist, pro-Soviet government threatened by internal rebellion. In a short period of time, thousands of Russian troops and support materials poured into Afghanistan. Thus began a frustrating military conflict with Afghan Muslim rebels, who despised their own nation’s communist government and the Soviet troops supporting it. During the next eight years, the two sides battled for control in Afghanistan, with neither the Soviets nor the rebels ever able to gain a decisive victory. For the Soviet Union, the intervention proved extraordinarily costly in a number of ways. While the Soviets never released official casualty figures for the war in Afghanistan, U.S. intelligence sources estimated that as many as 15,000 Russian troops died in Afghanistan, and the economic cost to the already struggling Soviet economy ran into billions of dollars. The intervention also strained relations between the Soviet Union and the United States nearly to the breaking point. President Jimmy Carter harshly criticized the Russian action, stalled talks on arms limitations, issued economic sanctions, and even ordered a boycott of the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow. By 1988, the Soviets decided to extricate itself from the situation. Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev saw the Afghan intervention as an increasing drain on the Soviet economy, and the Russian people were tired of a war that many Westerners referred to as “Russia’s Vietnam.” For Afghanistan, the Soviet withdrawal did not mean an end to the fighting, however. The Muslim rebels eventually succeeded in establishing control over Afghanistan in 1992.

In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. The West Bangor Memorial Association will hold its Annual Memorial Day Program on Monday, May 29, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Site, Second Street, West Bangor. The year 2017 is the 70th Anniversary of continuous Memorial Day services in West Bangor. The Program will include the recognition of seven living World War II Veterans whose names are listed on the Memorial Plaque in West Bangor. The principal speaker will be Colonel Terry J. Young. Colonel Young is a native of Pen Argyl, a graduate of Pen Argyl High School, and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also has a Masters degree in Educational Psychology and a Masters Equivalent in Strategic Studies. The Roper Quartet will render musical selections. Tanner Barr and Gianna Greggo, both students at Pen Argyl High School, will give recitations of “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” Walter Cole and Kyle Schmidt will play “Taps” in honor of deceased service men and women. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
