11 Year-Old Gets Big Surprise on Stage

Damon Chiodo expected a good grade when he turned in his essay about his personal hero. But as he read his report about his older brother, Devin Tomei, to his sixth-grade English class in the Carnegie Elementary School auditorium last week, he got a big surprise. As soon as Damon finished reading his report, he turned and saw that his brother had crept up behind him on the stage. A look of shock crossed the 11-year-old’s face before he jumped into his brother’s arms. Damon Chiodo, a sixth-grader at Carnegie Elementary School, hugs his big brother, Army Specialist Devin Tomei. The two hadn't seen each other in two years because the Spc. Tomei was overseas in Germany. “I was trying so hard not to cry in front of a whole room of sixth-graders,” Army Spc. Tomei, 25, said. He and his younger brother hadn’t seen each other for more than a couple of days in the past two years, after Spc. Tomei left for basic training in March 2015 before heading to Germany to work on CH-47 Chinook helicopters. Damon and his brother occasionally Skyped and played Xbox while he was stationed overseas, with Damon trying to talk to his brother every chance he got. “He was begging me to come home most of the time, telling me about all the stuff he’s doing,” Spc. Tomei said. So when he found out that he would, in fact, be coming home for a new post in the U.S., Spc. Tomei was immediately on board with his mother’s idea to surprise his little brother at his school in the Carlynton School District. And so were the school principal and Damon’s teacher, who “fabricated” the essay assignment for the occasion. Spc. Tomei hid behind the curtain backstage for 15 minutes and listened to Damon as he read his essay. “I’m glad nobody gave it away,” he said. He leaves again at the end of the month for Fort Campbell, Ky., and hopes to visit more frequently now that he’s stationed closer to home. In the meantime, he’s visiting with family and friends and spending time with Damon. “I’ve seen him pretty much every day now,” Spc. Tomei said. “He’s always wanting to do something.” Dancing with the Ghosts

Pen Argyl leaf collection begins October 23
Pen Argyl leaf collection will begin October 23, there will be no collection the week of November 20, collection resumes on November 27 and will end December. Please note leaves will not be picked up if they have sticks, acorns or animal feces in the piles. These materials can cause malfunctions with the machinery and become dangerous to our employees. Avoid putting leaves out 2 days before rain or foul weather, especially in the hilly areas of the Borough. During storms leaf piles can clog storm basins and cause water damage to streets and private property. Whenever possible, park away from leaf piles so the workers can maneuver the equipment and clean up more thoroughly. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the scheduling of the leaf pick-up, please call the Public Works Office at 610-863- 9249, leave your name, address and brief message, your call will be return at the earliest possible convenience.

Jimmy Carter wins Nobel Prize 2002
On this day in 2002, former President Jimmy Carter wins the Nobel Peace Prize “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
Carter, a peanut farmer from Georgia, served one term as U.S. president between 1977 and 1981. One of his key achievements as president was mediating the peace talks between Israel and Egypt in 1978. The Nobel Committee had wanted to give Carter (1924- ) the prize that year for his efforts, along with Anwar Sadat and Menachim Begin, but was prevented from doing so by a technicality–hehad not been nominated by the official deadline.
After he left office, Carter and his wife Rosalynn created the Atlanta-based Carter Center in 1982 to advance human rights and alleviate human suffering. Since 1984, they have worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes and raise awareness of homelessness. Among his many accomplishments, Carter has helped to fight disease and improve economic growth in developing nations and has served as an observer at numerous political elections around the world.

BASD Wellness Walking Programs
The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year.
Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies.
Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached.
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3 days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked per day)
Here you can find a way to compete among family members, friend groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!

Dancing with the Ghosts
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will present its 6th Annual Haunted Heritage Show entitled: “Dancing with the Ghosts” on Thursday, October 12, 2017 @ 7:00 PM at the Center 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA.
- Featured this year will be:
- Conrad Weiser - a farmer who was a negotiator and interpreter for the Peace Treaty with the local Lenape Native Americans.
- Johnnie Gruver- local dance and theater instructor who was known for her many stage productions.
- Joseph Heater-quarry worker (a Slater) who was killed in a quarry accident at the Stevens/Jackson quarry, whose body in still entombed on the site.
- David “Douse” Williams, local World War II veteran who was a POW in Germany and acquired his nickname as a result of his downtown Bangor antics.
- Mary Gertrude Smith Bodie- who was the first African American to graduate from Bangor in 1901 and went on to attend East Stroudsburg Normal School (ESU) and Dr. Stewart Wolf- famous for his “heart study” on the Italian-Americans who lived in Roseto, PA.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Dancing with the Ghosts
- The Slate Belt Heritage Center will present its 6th Annual Haunted Heritage Show entitled: “Dancing with the Ghosts” on Thursday, October 12, 2017 @ 7:00 PM at the Center 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA.
- Featured this year will be:
- Johnnie Gruver- local dance and theater instructor who was known for her many stage productions.
- Joseph Heater-quarry worker (a Slater) who was killed in a quarry accident at the Stevens/Jackson quarry, whose body in still entombed on the site.
- David “Douse” Williams, local World War II veteran who was a POW in Germany and acquired his nickname as a result of his downtown Bangor antics.
- Mary Gertrude Smith Bodie- who was the first African American to graduate from Bangor in 1901 and went on to attend East Stroudsburg Normal School (ESU) and Dr. Stewart Wolf- famous for his “heart study” on the Italian-Americans who lived in Roseto, PA.

Participants must provide their own transportation to the fishing site. This course is the perfect place to learn fly fishing basics and meet other people interested in fishing! Invite your friends, family or anybody else who may be interested in joining you for a day of fun on the water with a fly. This program is a partnership between PA Fish and Boat Commission, Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center and the Forks of the Delaware Chapter of Trout Unlimited. October 15th thru the 21st will be “National Friends of the Library Week”. Locally, the Friends of the Bangor Public Library, are a vibrant and industrious group of volunteers. As a means of garnering funds for the library the Friends conduct the following events each year: two “Used Books Sales” one at the Bee Hive the first week in May and at the Blue Valley Farm Show, two “Brunch with the Authors” featuring local literary artists, The Annual Downtown “Duck Race”, “Breakfast with Santa” the first Saturday in December, a Fall “Bake Sale”, and “Wine Tasting” event in November. The Friends also produce a Newsletter four times a year. 100% of the proceeds they raise are given to the Bangor library for operating expenses. This year, the Friends, are also initiating a major project to upgrade the children’s reading section.
The Friends meet the 4th Thursday @ 7:00 PM and invite anyone who is interested in joining to attend. Associate members are also accepted to help with the fund raising projects. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 484-894-5661.

NCC 8th Annual Talking Peace Justice Conference
Talking Peace, a Peace and Justice Conference, is set for October 19 at Northampton Community College. It is the eighth annual Peace and Justice Conference to take place at the College and will focus on 50 years of peace and justice activism in the United States. Events and displays will encourage empathy across cultures and appreciation of the roots of today’s activism from 50 years ago to coincide with NCC’s 50th anniversary.
The event will begin in the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall on the Bethlehem Campus at 9:30 – 11 a.m. The Keynote speaker will be announced as the event nears. Last year’s Keynote speaker was anti-racist writer, educator and Nashville, Tennessee native Tim Wise, who was very well received by the college community. For more information, call 610-861-4178.

The Bangor Elks Halloween Parade will be held on Thursday, October 19th, 2017 at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is “Let’s Go To The Movies”….Your favorite movie character.

Talking Peace, a Peace and Justice Conference, is set for October 19 at Northampton Community College. It is the eighth annual Peace and Justice Conference to take place at the College and will focus on 50 years of peace and justice activism in the United States. Events and displays will encourage empathy across cultures and appreciation of the roots of today’s activism from 50 years ago to coincide with NCC’s 50th anniversary.
The event will begin in the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall on the Bethlehem Campus at 9:30 – 11 a.m. The Keynote speaker will be announced as the event nears. The Bangor Elks Halloween Parade will be held on Thursday, October 19th, 2017 at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is “Let’s Go To The Movies”….Your favorite movie character.
Parade participants may register at Brays Newsstand, 36 Broadway, Bangor, Heard’s Meat Market, 501 S. Main Street, Bangor or the Bangor Public Library. The sign-up deadline is Saturday, October 14th at 3:00pm. Late signups will be held at the Bee Hive Community Center on Thursday, October 19th at 5:00pm. Pen Argyl leaf collection will begin October 23, there will be no collection the week of November 20, collection resumes on November 27 and will end December. Please note leaves will not be picked up if they have sticks, acorns or animal feces in the piles. These materials can cause malfunctions with the machinery and become dangerous to our employees. Avoid putting leaves out 2 days before rain or foul weather, especially in the hilly areas of the Borough. During storms leaf piles can clog storm basins and cause water damage to streets and private property. Whenever possible, park away from leaf piles so the workers can maneuver the equipment and clean up more thoroughly. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the scheduling of the leaf pick-up, please call the Public Works Office at 610-863- 9249, leave your name, address and brief message, your call will be return at the earliest possible convenience

The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) has announced an Ogham Art Class on November 1, 2017, at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St, Bethlehem PA 18015.
Members of the audience will enjoy a fun night of learning about Ogham alphabet, which was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and read from bottom to top. After that, the audience will create and take home your own painting. This is suitable for ages 16 and up. The cost of the class is $30, which includes materials’ fees.
Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children.

Professor Raising Money For Puerto Rico
Dr. Javier Ávila, author, poet, and professor of English at Northampton Community College, will present his acclaimed one man show, The Trouble with My Name, on Thursday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center. Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila was named the 2015 PA Professor of the Year, the first Latino to ever receive the award.
Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres.
The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography.
Ávila, a renowned poet and novelist, achieved international recognition when his bestselling novel "Different" became an award-winning motion picture, "Miente," which was screened in over a dozen countries.

Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres.
The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography.
Ávila, a renowned poet and novelist, achieved international recognition when his bestselling novel "Different" became an award-winning motion picture, "Miente," which was screened in over a dozen countries.
Suggested donations include: first aid kits, LED candles, garbage bags, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, can openers, canned foods and milk, baby food, baby formula, soap, baby wipes, diapers, water filtration bottles, bug repellent, feminine hygiene products, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, and solar light bulbs.
The Notations Series is presented by the Lehigh University Creative Writing Program, Visiting Lecturers Committee and Zoellner Arts Center with support from an Anonymous Donor.

Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, on Saturday, November 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. The College is located at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Participants will play five rounds in unrated and rated sections. Trophies and prizes will be awarded as well as random prize drawings.

Upper Mount Bethel Township will be hosting its First Fall Festival November 4th, 2017 with a fun-filled kids’ day and fundraiser for the recent Hurricane Victims and Bloom Bangor! All are welcome to attend!
On Saturday, November 4th, 2017 Upper Mount Bethel Township will be hosting its first Fall Festival from 1-5 pm at the Chelsea Sun Inn, 487 Stone Church Drive in Mount Bethel. There will be pumpkin picking and painting, a petting zoo, face painting, hay rides, music, a 50/50 raffle and a Tricky Tray. Tickets will be sold at the event for these features as well as refreshments and food! A FREE Touch-a-Truck exhibit sponsored by Upper Mount Bethel Township will be on-site and will include road crew vehicles, local fire trucks and other vehicles.
All proceeds from the event will be shared equally between two local non-profits, Nick Russo’s American Way Disaster Relief and Bloom Bangor. American Way Disaster Relief brings essential supplies to victims of natural disaster, specifically those harmed by the recent hurricanes. Bloom Bangor is a two-year residential recovery program for survivors of addiction, trauma and human trafficking. We will also collect non-perishable food items for PUMP, the Portland Upper Mount Bethel Food Pantry.

Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him.
All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley Times, Slate Belt Town Topics, The Belt & Beyond, and subsequently publishing his own book. Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. Tickets for the event are $ 5.00 and can be purchased at the Bangor Library, 39 North Main Street, Bangor, PA.
