Slaters Celebrate.......

The Bangor student body including, fans, players, cheerleaders, band members and more sing the school's alma mater after the Slaters ' 67-65 win over Notre Dame GP Tuesday night.

Miles' Shot in Realtime......

Miles' Shot in Slo Mo........

Bangor's Miles stuns NDGP at Final Buzzer
Bangor’s CJ Miles drove the length of the court to score on a driving, twisting, left-handed lay-up with 7 seconds left giving the Slaters a surprising 67-65 win over Notre DameGP and overcoming a super 40-point performance by the Crusaders’ Brendan Boyle.
The Slaters, which lost 67-59 to the Crusaders earlier in the year, fell behind early, trailing 13-3 midway through the first quarter. By quarter’s end, however,  Bangor narrowed the gap to trail 21-16. The Slaters rallied to take a 29-23 lead in second quarter on the strength of threes by Ethan Saxe, Nate Owens and freshman Justin Petersen, but a bizarre set of circumstances led to Boyle making four consecutive free throw later that helped Notre Dame regain the lead by halftime at 35-34.
Bangor stayed with Notre Dame to take a 52-51 lead entering the final period. Problem was – Owens and Gabe Zeiba each picked up their fourth foul. Miles, however, playing only his second game after missing three games with an ankle injury, filled in the gap scoring nine of the Slaters’ 15 final points, including the game-ending thriller.
Miles led the team in scoring with 19 followed Ethan Saxe with 11 Carlos Colon 10, Zeiba 8 and Owens 7. Petersen scored a pair of threes and Quin Karner made pair of lay-ups at crucial moments of the second half.
Bangor improved to 6-8 overall and 4-7 in the league. Thursday they entertain league-leading Southern Lehigh (9-0) in game starting at 6:45.

Crusader Girls Hand Slaters Second League Loss
The Slaters girls were not so fortunate losing to Notre Dame on the road 48-35.
Early on, a three by Casey Walsh and field goals by Kaylee Holland and Madeline Minner kept the Slaters close, trailing 9-7 by the end of the first quarter.
The Crusaders standout Cassie Murphy, however, scored eight of her game-high 15 points in the second quarter, leading the Crusaders on 21-12 run and a commanding 30-19 lead at halftime. Notre Dame continued to pull away, leading 43-24 going into the final period.
In the final quarter, Walsh scored five points and Holland connected on four consecutive free throws making the final score a more respectable 48-35.
Walsh (13) and Holland (10) led Bangor in scoring.  Morgan Karasek scored six. Walsh scored three from behind the arc. Bangor, 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the league,  will play at Southern Lehigh Thursday night.

Paltry Third Quarter Dooms Pen Argyl
The Pen Argyl boys suffered a two-point third period leading to a 50-41 loss to Saucon Valley in game played Tuesday night.
Mat Ragozino scored eight first half points, keeping the Green Knights even 20-20 at halftime.    Unfortunately, shots were not falling in the third period as the Panthers took a 35-22 lead at the end of three   quarters.
Conor Fehr and Colin McKeague combined for 12 of the Knights 19-point final period, but it was a bit too little, too late allowing Saucon Valley to win 50-41.
Fehr led the Knights with 12 while McKeague scored 11. Jordan DeFelice scored a pair of three-pointers.
The Knights will entertain Moravian Academy Friday and Quakertown Saturday.

*****The Pen Argyl girls reportedly won their game with Saucon Valley last night.

PA Hemp Program Taking Apps from Growers

Picture

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s 2020 hemp program is now accepting applications from both commercial growers and processors.
The 2020 application period is open through April 1. This year, both growers and processors of hemp are required to apply. The permitting of processors is new for the 2020 program. Each individual property will require its own permit and application. A permit costs $150.
It is the second year for the program, with farmers planting just over 4,000 acres of hemp across 55 counties in 2019.
Hemp was grown in Pennsylvania and throughout the United States until after World War II but became regulated along with marijuana and its cultivation was prohibited. Unlike marijuana, hemp is also grown for fiber and seed, in addition to floral extracts, and must maintain a much lower concentration of the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, below the 0.3% legal threshold.

Slater Girls Clinch District Spot
Team Tommy Event Saturday

PictureCasey Walsh
The Bangor Girls basketball team clinched a spot in the District playoffs with a decisive 48-11 win over East Stroudsburg North in an independent game played at ESN Monday night.
Casey Walsh, who scored five, three-pointers versus Pen Argyl Saturday afternoon, duplicated that feat last night making four in the first half as the Slaters shot to a 29-11 halftime advantage. Bangor forced the Timberwolves into 21 turnovers and held them scoreless in the third period to take a 40-11 lead going into the final period.
Madeline Minner also reached double figures with 10 points, including a pair of threes.
Dani Hess also hit from behind the arc giving Bangor a game total of eight. Morgan Karasek was among the game’s leading scorers with eight points.
The Slaters (11-2) play three of the top Colonial League teams this week to round out at a very busy week on the hardwood. Tonight they travel to Notre Dame GP hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Crusaders. Thursday they are on the road at Southern Lehigh and they close out the week entertaining Wilson in the Saturday afternoon when the Slater Girls will hosting a benefit for Tommy Stackhouse who is battling leukemia.
The Team Tommy event will be held in Bill Pensyl gym. Game time 12:45. There will be a Tricky Tray with lots of great baskets, t-shirts for sale, and 50/50. Please come out to support Tommy .

Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement

Picture

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) announced that the required 60-day pre-enforcement period for the statewide Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program has begun and will last until March 4.
Pennsylvania’s AWZSE program uses vehicle-mounted systems to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits using electronic speed timing devices. The goal is to protect the lives of motorists, passengers and highway workers.During the pre-enforcement period, automated speed enforcement units will be deployed in active work zones, but violations will not be issued. Work zones are selected to maximize the effectiveness of the systems and will be marked with signage in advance of the enforcement area. Additionally, locations are posted on the project website, workZoneCameras.PennDOT.gov.
AWZSE systems are only operational in active work zones where workers are present. Once enforcement begins on March 4, registered owners will receive a warning letter for a first offense, a violation notice and $75 fine for a second offense, and a violation notice and $150 fine for third and subsequent offenses. These violations are civil penalties only; no points will be assessed to driver’s licenses.
In 2018, there were 1,804 work zone crashes in Pennsylvania, resulting in 23 fatalities. Since 1970, PennDOT has lost 89 workers in the line of duty. The PA Turnpike has lost 45 workers since 1945.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

Picture
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Realty Transfer Tax Exemption Available
to Preserved Farm Owners

Picture
Owners of Pennsylvania’s more than 5,600 preserved farm owners are now eligible to apply for a new realty transfer tax exemption through the Department of Agriculture.
The exemption is available to owners of preserved farms who transfer a farm to a qualified beginner farmer. The goal of the measure is to help carry on the state’s strong agricultural traditions.
Under the law, a qualified beginning farmer is one who has demonstrated experience in the industry or a related field with transferable skills; has not received federal gross income from agriculture production for more than 10 years; intends to engage in agricultural production in Pennsylvania; and has obtained written certification, as a result of an application, from the Department of Agriculture confirming his or her qualified beginning farmer status.
To apply for certification as a beginning farmer, click here.

Dressing for Winter Outdoors

Picture

There are several layers of clothing that should be worn when recreating in winter:
  • The base layer is meant to wick moisture away from your skin. During the winter season, most people wear long underwear made from materials that wick moisture and dry quickly, such as polypropylene, polyester, silk, or merino wool.
  • The middle layer is what helps to retain your body heat. It should help keep you warm, but not provide a lot of extra bulk. A lot of people may wear a long sleeved-shirt, or a button up shirt that can be easily removed.
  • The insulating layer is worn over the middle layer and is to be worn in very cold conditions. Good options include fleece, hoodies, sweaters.
  • The outer layer is your jacket which should protect you from wind and rain. This layer should fit comfortably over the other layers and not restrict your movement.
Even if you don’t wear all of the layers when you first head outdoors, you should take them all with you in case you need them.
It’s also very important to protect your extremities. In the winter, you can lose body heat through your head, so wearing a winter hat or beanie that wicks moisture away and dries quickly is a must.
In windy conditions, wearing a scarf or face mask can help protect your neck and face.
Warm gloves also are critical. Look for insulated mittens and gloves, or you can look for glove liners to wear in addition to your winter gloves.
And lastly, keeping your feet warm and preventing frostbite in your toes can be done with proper footwear and socks. The key is to keep your feet warm and dry, so look for waterproof, insulated boots, and moisture-wicking socks.
There are many ways you can keep your feet warm and protected, including wearing a double layer of socks (light moisture wicking sock and an outer layer sock) or grabbing some toe warmers to insert into your boot.
By dressing appropriately and taking the steps to be prepared, you can enjoy the outdoors comfortably and safely in the winter.

Before Going Outdoors Plan Ahead

Picture
Before you head out for some winter fun, be sure to plan your adventure ahead of time; tell someone where you are going and your expected time of return; and bring along other helpful gear for you to be prepared in case of an emergency.
Always check the weather forecast for the area where you are heading. For economic, logistic, and environmental reasons, many state forest roads and drivable trails receive no winter maintenance and are considered “travel at own risk.”
Visitors to state forests must use extreme caution; and are reminded that many state forest roads have limited or no cell phone service
