Snowman Through History

Snowman-making is one of man’s oldest forms of folk art. The first postcards, the first magazines, the first silent movies—it’s the snowman you find appearing during key historical moments, like a frozen Forrest Gump. We hold very few of our daily activities in common with our ancestors, but making snowmen is one of the last remaining. It’s worth noting that for most children, making a snowman is the first, and probably last, time they will create a life-size human figure. It’s impossible to to decisively identify the very first snowman, but some archaeologists believe it’s plausible that prehistoric peoples also used snow to depict themselves. Cavemen made art with all materials available, whether it was mud, wood, sticks, or we can only speculate that a piece of coal may have at one time been the eye of a prehistoric snowman. Snow Guards? The first recorded snowman in the U.S. comes from one of the bloodiest events in early American history. The Massacre of 1690 ended with the deaths of 60 villagers (including 10 women and 12 children), when Native Americans and Frenchmen attacked Fort Schenectady. Traveling over a week in knee-deep slushy snow down the Mohawk Valley, the attackers came within sight of the town on February 8th. The trip was so strenuous that the attackers were ready to surrender if there was any resistance. By the time they reached the village, it was almost midnight and a blizzard had kicked in. The north gate was surprisingly open, and this convinced the war party to act. According to oral history and tradition, the two guards had left their post to enjoy drinks at the pub and they had left two snowmen to guard the gates that were frozen open.

This year, they are all back at the dental office location providing this fun activity for all the Slate Belt families. They hope to provide an intimate setting where each child in attenda.

Hope UCC, 701 Cherry Street, Wind Gap will hold a night of Christmas music on Friday, December 15, 2015 at 7:00 pm. The music will be presented by Bill Siegel on lead guitar along with Brenda and Jerry. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 14Amundsen reaches South Pole 1911 Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott. Amundsen, born in Borge, near Oslo, in 1872, was one of the great figures in polar exploration. In 1897, he was first mate on a Belgian expedition that was the first ever to winter in the Antarctic. In 1903, he guided the 47-ton sloop Gjöa through the Northwest Passage and around the Canadian coast, the first navigator to accomplish the treacherous journey. Amundsen planned to be the first man to the North Pole, and he was about to embark in 1909 when he learned that the American Robert Peary had achieved the feat. Amundsen completed his preparations and in June 1910 sailed instead for Antarctica, where the English explorer Robert F. Scott was also headed with the aim of reaching the South Pole. In early 1911, Amundsen sailed his ship into Antarctica’s Bay of Whales and set up base camp 60 miles closer to the pole than Scott. In October, both explorers set off–Amundsen using sleigh dogs, and Scott employing Siberian motor sledges, Siberian ponies, and dogs. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen’s expedition won the race to the Pole and returned safely to base camp in late January.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. The district office is located at 2989 Route 611, Suite 103 Tannersville, PA 18372.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a service officer with the American Legion Pennsylvania Department will be on site to assist veterans with issues including: compensation and pension claims, education benefits, enrollment in the VA health care system, burial and survivor benefits, state benefits, and obtaining military personnel and medical records.
Veterans do not need to be a member of the American Legion to receive these services. Please contact the Tannersville office to schedule an appointment at 570-620-4326.

National Free Throw Contest
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the Elks National Hoop Shoot to be held beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Washington Elementary School, 381 Washington Blvd, Bangor, PA. This Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13 and is free to all contestants. Registration will be open beginning at noon on December 16, 2017 at the school gymnasium. Beginning at the local level, winning contestants will advance through District, State, Regional, and National competitions. The Elks helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One boy and one girl from each division will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, provides a character-building, competitive experience for all contestants. Contestants learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship. The Bangor Lodge is a proud sponsor of this annual local event. Winners of this local event will represent our Lodge at the District Free throw competition, also being held at Washington Elementary on February 3, 2018.

Mt. Bethel and North Bangor Volunteer Fire Companies will deliver gifts from Santa to your children on Saturday, December 16th from 4-7pm and Sunday, December 17th from 1-4pm. For a $10 donation, Upper Mount Bethel resident can have a pre-wrapped gift delivered to their home by Santa on a Fire Truck.
Residents who want to participate can sent their donation (make checks payable Mount Bethel Fire Company) along with their name, address, phone number, email, children's name(s) and ages and the date you'd like delivery to Fire Chief Chris Finan, Attn.: Santa Delivery, 48 Shawnee Drive, Mount Bethel, PA 18343 not later than December 1st.

Slate Belt Animal Advocacy Group is hosting Dog Photos with Santa on December 16th at Baby Harry Coffee Co. on Broadway in Bangor. Photos are by appointment and will be taken in the back room of Baby Harry's between 11am and 2pm. The cost is $10 and you will receive and 8X10 photo with copyright release. Appointments are made in 10 minute intervals so please be on time. This is for dogs only and they must be on a leash. The dog's owner will be responsible for keeping the animal under control at all times. If you have more than one dog, they can be in the same picture or you can reserve multiple time slots.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

POSITION: Head Football Coach EFFECTIVE: 2018-2019 School Year BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: To provide instruction regarding the knowledge and skills while participating in an activity of this kind. To provide the necessary supervision/direction for the participating students, both individually and as a group for school and athletic events throughout the year. REQUIREMENTS: Should possess the knowledge and skills associated with which to coach football. Should possess the ability to direct/supervise a program of this kind.
