Butterball’s Turkey Talk-Line has helped nearly 50 million panicked home cooks since 1981. The helpline was one of the country’s first toll-free consumer help lines and remains the most popular in the world of telephone cooking assistance. (Sorry, Sara Lee’s Pie Hotline.) Before the company’s “turkey experts” (of which there are 50, all based outside of Chicago) are set loose on the hotline, they go through their “freshman” training at Butterball University. It’s the first part of the company’s ongoing three-year-long training program where experts learn the company’s preferred methods for cooking a turkey (open-pan roasting), thawing a turkey (in the fridge, 24 hours per four pounds of meat), basting a turkey (overrated), and more. Most of the questions fielded by Butterball are what you'd expect (see below for the 5 most common questions!), like wondering when to start thawing your turkey—pop that baby in the refrigerator on Nov. 16, the company’s designated “Thaw Day”—and microwaving. “Every year we get calls about microwaving,” said Somers. “Maybe [the caller’s] oven is broken, or maybe they've fallen on hard times, and that might be their only option, so to be able to help somebody with that essential is awesome.” For microwaving, Somers says the method yields a surprisingly good bird, if you have a large enough microwave, and if you cA a browning sauce, that you brush over a few times during cooking to give it that golden appearance.” Questions about jacuzzi or pool thawing are surprisingly common, says Somers. (The answer is no, by the way, because while turkeys are wrapped pretty solidly, unintentionally marinating your Thanksgiving feast in chlorine doesn’t sound like a great plan.) And then things get weird. Specialists on both lines take some calls that are puzzling or just plain bizarre, like the man who called to ask if the oil from the chainsaw he used to cut his turkey (because why not?) would taint the meat. Callers often ask about substitutes for Butterball’s recommended vegetable oil rub, with many inquiring if they can slather on suntan oil. Your Banana Boat should not make its way onto your bird, but Mary Clingman, a 20-year Butterball veteran, did help one caller who was hosting guests from the Bahamas, craft an aluminum foil turkey bikini to get that sun-kissed glow. Another memorable call came last year when a young mother called Somers after making a startling realization. “While she had turned her back, her son had shoved Legos in the cavity of the turkey,” said Somers. “She asked if it was okay to eat. In that case, I wouldn’t do it. I don’t know what’s in that kind of plastic, turkeys cook a long time, and it’s a lot of heat.” As you’d expect, the people who staff holiday hotlines serve as therapists of sorts for harried home cooks. “It's a fun job because you really instill confidence in these these people and they're so thankful,” said Berthasavage. “When we interview for positions for the hotline we need to be really clear that they're not going to be doing a lot of hands-on baking. It’s what wecall visual baking—walking people through recipes and through their dilemma.” Carol Miller, a 30-year Butterball veteran, once took a call from a divorcée who was cooking a turkey for her third husband. The caller explained that Thanksgiving with her first husband was a disaster when she forgot to thaw the bird. With her second husband, the foil pan she was using bent and fell to the floor, taking the turkey with it. Now, for her third attempt, she was calling Butterball to ensure success every step of the way. Luckily for her, the third time was the charm. “When people aren’t so happy, we try and lift their spirits a little bit. It’s only Thanksgiving,” said Somers. “It’s about being thankful and about being with the people that you love, so by the end of most calls, we’ve been able to make people pretty happy.” "BLESS THE BLUE" Program

For more information visit: bahsbands.weebly.com THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 17Elizabethan Age begins 1558 Queen Mary I, the monarch of England and Ireland since 1553, dies and is succeeded by her 25-year-old half-sister, Elizabeth. The two half-sisters, both daughters of King Henry VIII, had a stormy relationship during Mary’s five-year reign. Mary, who was brought up as a Catholic, enacted pro-Catholic legislation and made efforts to restore the pope to supremacy in England. A Protestant rebellion ensued, and Queen Mary imprisoned Elizabeth, a Protestant, in the Tower of London on suspicion of complicity. After Mary’s death, Elizabeth survived several Catholic plots against her; though her ascension was greeted with approval by most of England’s lords, who were largely Protestant and hoped for greater religious tolerance under a Protestant queen. Under the early guidance of Secretary of State Sir William Cecil, Elizabeth repealed Mary’s pro-Catholic legislation, established a permanent Protestant Church of England, and encouraged the Calvinist reformers in Scotland. In foreign affairs, Elizabeth practiced a policy of strengthening England’s Protestant allies and dividing her foes. Elizabeth was opposed by the pope, who refused to recognize her legitimacy, and by Spain, a Catholic nation that was at the height of its power. In 1588, English-Spanish rivalry led to an abortive Spanish invasion of England in which the Spanish Armada, the greatest naval force in the world at the time, was destroyed by storms and a determined English navy.
