Wind Advisory - Heavy Rain - Power Outages
A Wind Advisory remains in effect until noon today for wind from the west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Winds will continue to increase early this morning, peaking from around dawn to the late morning hours, before decreasing around midday. Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected. At 6:45 am today there are reported power outage posts on Facebook that include Johnson Road, Ackermanville Road, Lower South Main Street in Bangor plus other reports of flickering lights. Yesterday's rain netted 1.93 inches which is less than many areas in the northeast. Our total for the month stands at 5.81 inches which is above the normal of 4.33 inches. For those who has have mowed their lawns nearly twice each week for most of the year you know that the weather has been exceptionally wet. March, April, July August and October have all experienced above average rainfall. June and May were close to average while September was the only exception with 2.72 inches of rain which was an inch and a half below normal. With the wet trend in effect one wonders about a snowy winter even though advance forecasts are not calling for above average snow. Time will tell. The rainy weather Sunday also caused problems for planned trick-or-treat events. Some municipalities postponed, some did not, some did not make any decisions and there were erroneous reports especially for Bangor which did not cancel as some people told us. A list of trick-or-treat nights are listed in the scroll above. Dentist Offers Cash for Candy![]() Trick-or-treaters who would rather have cash than candy can have their wish as a New Jersey dentist is offering money to kids who hand over the goods to promote dental hygiene.
Dr. Robin Lucas was inspired to start a “Candy Buyback” program after her own children came home several years ago with a flier from a local dentist about a similar incentive she told Inside Edition. So when her practice, Lucas Dental Associates, expanded into pediatrics two years ago, she decided to offer her own spin on the creative solution to quash the sugar rush that comes at the end of October. “It was fun, it was great,” she said. “Moms and dads were excited about it.” Children who hand over their candy get $5 and a toothbrush. “I couldn’t give just a dollar; a dollar would be insulting,” she said with a laugh. “The kids love it. Some kids just like the idea of $5, and the toothbrush drives the importance of dental hygiene home.” Though Lucas previously offered the deal to only patients, she has previously given out more than $500 for candy collected. She then donates the treats to the military. Lucas has now opened her practice to any children in the community-at-large who are interested in the buyback and plans to have twice the cash on hand to cover the anticipated rush. “We’re hoping given the amount of attention and publicity we got, we’re going to go broke,” she said with a laugh. Lucas noted that while some older kids are more reticent to give up their hard-earned sweets, younger children have less of an attachment to the tradition. “Ten-year-olds, 9-year-olds—it’s harder for them to separate with the candy, whereas 3-, 4-, 5-year-olds, parents have more influence over,” she said. That takeaway drives home the importance of familiarizing children with moderation and having them understand the dangers of sugar, she said. “We’re all parents at the end of the day, and it’s a struggle,” she said. “My kids, unlike me, they like candy. I actually say ‘sugar is poison’ — trying to indoctrinate that early.” Haunted School House

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 30Gateway Arch completed 1965 On this day in 1965, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch, a spectacular 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel marking the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri. The Gateway Arch, designed by Finnish-born, American-educated architect Eero Saarinen, was erected to commemorate President Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and to celebrate St. Louis’ central role in the rapid westward expansion that followed. As the market and supply point for fur traders and explorers—including the famous Meriwether Lewis and William Clark—the town of St. Louis grew exponentially after the War of 1812, when great numbers of people began to travel by wagon train to seek their fortunes west of the Mississippi River. In 1947-48, Saarinen won a nationwide competition to design a monument honoring the spirit of the western pioneers. In a sad twist of fate, the architect died of a brain tumor in 1961 and did not live to see the construction of his now-famous arch, which began in February 1963. Completed in October 1965, the Gateway Arch cost less than $15 million to build. With foundations sunk 60 feet into the ground, its frame of stressed stainless steel is built to withstand both earthquakes and high winds. An internal tram system takes visitors to the top, where on a clear day they can see up to 30 miles across the winding Mississippi and to the Great Plains to the west. In addition to the Gateway Arch, the Jefferson Expansion Memorial includes the Museum of Westward Expansion and the Old Courthouse of St. Louis, where two of the famous Dred Scott slavery cases were heard in the 1860s. Today, some 4 million people visit the park each year to wander its nearly 100 acres, soak up some history and take in the breathtaking views from Saarinen’s gleaming arch. Pa. Featured author will be local businessman Joe DeFranco. Mr. DeFranco will present his book: Growing Up in the Butcher Shop. Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him. All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley Times, Slate Belt Town Topics, The Belt & Beyond, and subsequently publishing his own book. Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. Tickets for the event are $ 5.00 and can be purchased at the Bangor Library, 39 North Main Street, Bangor, PA. All proceeds benefit the Bangor Library.
