Do's & Don'ts to Reduce Risk of Cancer - Smoking Recent research on the genetics of cancer may lead to impression that some are fated for the disease, but that's not necessarily true.
Healthy behaviors could prevent about half of all cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. Here is the first of 10 lifestyle changes (1 per day), based on recent research, that can improve your odds of warding off cancer. The tips come from Dr. Anne McTiernan, a cancer prevention researcher at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Don't smoke or use any tobacco products. Smoking causes a host of cancers, including cancers of the lung, esophagus, mouth, throat, stomach and pancreas, according to the National Cancer Institute. It's also the leading cause of premature, preventable death in the United States. If you've tried to quit before, don't give up eventually something will work, McTiernan said. Fish tank thieves attempt getaway on motorcycle(UPI) - Police in Ohio shared a photo of two suspected thieves carrying a stolen aquarium on a motorcycle -- and the aquarium later shattered.
The Niles Police Department posted a photo to Facebook showing two men riding on a motorcycle with the passenger carrying a box containing a large aquarium. The post said the aquarium had been shoplifted from the local PetSmart store about 11:30 a.m. Monday and an officer on his way to the scene spotted the pair on the motorcycle. Police said the passenger jumped off the motorcycle at one point, breaking the pilfered aquarium, and was arrested. He was identified as Mitchell Adkins, 52. Police lost track of the motorcycle rider, but the vehicle was soon found abandoned behind the Chef Peng restaurant. Officers searched the area and spotted a "nervous-looking" man behind a home. "Besides looking nervous, the male began to furiously prune a small tree with his bare hands telling officers he was there to do yard work," the Facebook post said. The man told police he saw the suspects flee east on a nearby road, but investigators did not believe his story and he was identified as the driver of the motorcycle. The man was identified as Christopher Binion, 46. Both men were charged with theft-related offenses and Binion was also charged with traffic violations including failure to comply. Seventh Annual Mass at
St. Roch's Catholic Church The celebration of the Seventh Annual Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Roch’s Catholic Church, West Bangor. The Mass will include the Feast of the Assumption and the honoring of the Patron Saint of St. Roch. The Reverend Monsignor Vincent P. York, Pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Pen Argyl, will be the Celebrant. This Annual Mass has been held at the closed church each August since 2015. The liturgy and music for the August Mass will include reading and hymns. Attendees will also participate in reading the prayer to St. Roch. Former parishioners and all those who wish to fulfill their Holy Day Obligation to attend Mass on the Feast Day of the Assumption of our Lady may do so at the Mass at St. Roch’s in West Bangor. Book review ......... "Nutshell" book by Ian McEwan review by Jill Silvius Much contemporary fiction is populated by unusual and compelling voices; toddler Jack in Emma Donoghue’s Room and beloved dog Enzo in Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain spring to mind. Nutshell’s narrator, however, might be even stranger. The title of British author McEwan’s latest slim volume refers to a mother’s womb, and the narrator is its unnamed occupant as he nears birth. The fetus faces an awkward situation: his mother Trudy and uncle Claude are conspiring to poison his father John. Hunched in the womb, the baby overhears their conversations and expresses his love/hate relationship toward his mother and his own precarious future. (Will they want him when he’s born? What if they’re caught red-handed?) And because he is unborn, he presents a unique view of his/the world. For instance, he imagines various colors but admits that he really doesn’t know what any look like. He describes endless podcasts that his mother listens to. When Trudy drinks wine to get through rough days (and overly poetic conversations with John and his student [lover?] Elodie), he expresses the way the alcohol softens his demeanor. To get his mother’s attention or distract her, he kicks. He also waxes philosophical, painting highly unflattering portraits of other countries (he resides in New Zealand) and the state of the world, for instance. The end leaves the reader hanging, sort-of, as the narrator pokes his finger through the membrane holding him, causing Trudy’s water to break at a critical juncture in their murder plot. But there are enough clues to hint of plausible endings beyond the final page. Nutshell presents a strange, unusual voice’s view of the world. You won’t soon forget it. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - July 30Johnson signs Medicare into law 1965 On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, which took place at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, former President Harry Truman was enrolled as Medicare’s first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card. Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who, in 1945, had become the first president to propose national health insurance, an initiative that was opposed at the time by Congress. The Medicare program, providing hospital and medical insurance for Americans age 65 or older, was signed into law as an amendment to the Social Security Act of 1935. Some 19 million people enrolled in Medicare when it went into effect in 1966. BMCL Fundraisers Mark your calendar for a fundraiser at Emmy Lou’s Ice Cream Café at 492 E.
