Rare sea otter off Wa. Coast
Washington mammal enthusiasts are celebrating after an increased number of sea otters have been spotted in the Puget Sound region. Island Adventures Whale Watching naturalist McKenna Hanson took a picture of a female sea otter near the mouth of the Elwha River Sunday afternoon. This is believed to be the third confirmed sea otter in the Salish Sea this year. Sea otters spend most of their time at sea and can be found floating on their backs sleeping or snacking on shellflish. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claims that the number of sea otters on the Pacific coast once numbered as many as 300,000. Between 1740 and 1900, sea otters were nearly driven to extinction due to trapping. Since they have nearly 1 million hairs per square inch, their pelts were sought after during this period. By 1900 the commercial harvest of sea otters ended, only because their numbers had dwindled so low that it was nearly impossible to find them. The hunting of sea otters was officially banned after the 1911 International Fur Treaty was signed and enacted. There are an estimated 1,000 sea otters in Washington; the population increase is due to conservation efforts in the state. These sea otters are typically seen along the outer coast near Destruction Island and Cape Flattery. Lately a few individual sea otters have been spotted exploring inland waters in the Puget Sound. Last month, an otter with an injured left eye had been spotted near the southern end of San Juan Island. After several people spotted the otter on multiple occasions, naturalist Sara Hysong-Shimazu of Maya's Legacy Whale Watching nicknamed the otter "Odin" after the Norse god who sacrificed his eye in exchange for wisdom. Another sea otter nicknamed "Ollie" hangs out near Race Rocks Ecological reserve, a protected area near Victoria, B.C. Ollie has a Facebook page where updates and pictures are shared. It is too early to determine why sea otters are beginning to return to the Washington coast, but their presence in local waters is welcomed and encouraged. News Shorts.........

Jessica Lynch gets hero’s welcome 2003
On this day in 2003, U.S. Army Private Jessica Lynch, a prisoner-of-war who was rescued from an Iraqi hospital, receives a hero’s welcome when she returns to her hometown of Palestine, West Virginia. The story of the 19-year-old supply clerk, who was captured by Iraqi forces in March 2003, gripped America; however, it was later revealed that some details of Lynch’s dramatic capture and rescue might have been exaggerated.
Lynch, who was born April 26, 1983, was part of the 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss, Texas. On March 23, 2003, just days after the U.S. invaded Iraq, Lynch was riding in a supply convoy when her unit took a wrong turn and was ambushed by Iraqi forces near Nasiriya. Eleven American soldiers died and four others besides Lynch were captured.
Lynch, who sustained multiple broken bones and other injuries when her vehicle crashed during the ambush, was taken to an Iraqi hospital. On April 1, she was rescued by U.S. Special Forces who raided the hospital where she was being held. They also recovered the bodies of eight of Lynch’s fellow soldiers. Lynch was taken to a military hospital in Germany for treatment and then returned to the United States.

The Women’s Altar and Rosary Society of St. Rocco’s Catholic Church in Martins Creek have designed and pieced an “Inspirational Quilt”. With the guidance of Carol Smith and Antonette Rollo, the women were instructed as to the construction and steps necessary to accomplish the project. Blocks of spiritual sayings are combined with pieced sections to complete the work of art. The work sessions also proved to be a source of bonding and good will among the many women who assisted. The quilt will be chanced off at St. Rocco’s Annual Festival on August 9th, 10th, & 11th.

Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

The Slate Belt Young at Heart Club will be sponsoring a trip to Sight & Sound in Lancaster to see "Jesus" on October 24th.
