The final stage is heat stroke and is considered a medical emergency — get help fast. This potentially fatal condition is a result of prolonged heat exposure or physical exertion. A heat stroke is characterized when the body's core temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Symptoms include: confusion due to lack of blood flow to the brain, reddened dry skin, lack of sweat, organ failure, convulsions or seizure., muscle ache or cramping Fortunately, these conditions are preventable with some simple preparation and paying close attention to your body. Bus Trip to Civil War Museum Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Reservations are required and a light lunch will be provided. Tickets are available at Bray’s News, 36 Broadway and Heard’s Market, 501 South Main Street, both in Bangor, PA. Join butterfly enthusiast Bill Grant and Grassland Bird Expert, Rick Wiltraut for this walk through the grasslands at Grand Central landfill in Pen Argyl to look for local species of butterflies. We’ll also look at different species of birds that make the grasslands their home. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, wear a hat and bring bottled water. Bring bug spray and binoculars as we venture through the warm season grasslands searching for butterflies! If the weather should call for rain, event will be cancelled. Registration is required. Jacqueline Bouvier and JFK engagement - 1953
On this day in 1953, Jacqueline Bouvier and Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy publicly announce their engagement. Kennedy went on to become the 35th president and Jackie, as she was known, became one of the most popular first ladies ever to grace the White House.
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy was born into a prominent New York family in 1929. She grew up an avid horsewoman and reader. In 1951, after graduating from George Washington University, Jackie toured Europe with her sister. That fall, she returned to the U.S. to begin her first job as the Washington Times-Herald‘s “Inquiring Camera Girl.” Her assignment was to roam the streets of Washington, D.C., ask strangers man on the street questions and then snap their picture for publication. Shortly afterward, at a dinner party in Georgetown, she met a young, handsome senator from Massachusetts named John F. Kennedy. The two dated over the next two years, during which time Jackie mused to a friend that she might actually marry a man who was allergic to horses, something she never before would have considered. In May 1953, Kennedy proposed, giving Jackie a 2.88-carat diamond-and-emerald ring from Van Cleef and Arpels.
The couple married on September 12, 1953, at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island. Twelve hundred people attended the wedding reception at Hammersmith Farm.

Good News For Diabetics and EMS Personnel
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has expanded protocol to benefit our emergency medical services and any diabetic patients they see in the field. Emergency responders are now allowed to administer a finger stick test to check blood glucose levels of diabetic patients, instead of having to wait to do so at a local hospital. Prior to this decision, the test was not allowed to be performed in the field because it was deemed to be outside their scope of practice.
These talented men and women who are there for us in our time of need deserve to have all the tools they need to effectively perform their duties. In a job where lives are on the line and seconds count, this decision by the Department of Health makes tremendous sense.

Male bus drivers don skirts for right to wear them
(UPI) -- Male bus drivers in a city in western France won the right to wear shorts to work after wearing skirts to protest their company's strict dress code.
Bus company Semitan agreed to update its uniform policy, which previously required employees to wear trousers, as bus drivers in the city of Nantes wore skirts on Wednesday in the midst of a heatwave. "In this heatwave, the temperatures are reaching close to [122 degrees] behind our windscreens. And given we have no air conditioning on our buses, it's unbearable," union representative Gabriel Magner said. The company previously maintained that shorts are not an appropriate form of dress for its drivers and attempted to accommodate for heat by offering a new line of lighter "summer trousers" as of last year. As temperatures reached record highs this year, Semitan's drivers decided they'd had enough of the long pants and decided to protest by exploiting a loophole in the dress code. "Our managers say shorts are not suitable for our profession. We've opted for provocation by coming in skirts, which are allowed for female drivers," driver Didier Sauvetre said. Semitan will allow drivers to wear shorts that correspond to the uniform's color scheme of black and beige as they work to devise a new dress code. |

Tasty Tuesdays at Trinity Lutheran Church
Trinity Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Slatebelt Community this summer. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

Families will be able to enjoy a variety of old fashion games and activities like relay races, making crafts, playing with old fashion toys, partake in a horse drawn wagon ride, participating in garden-related activities and more. Tours of the historic farmstead will take place as usual. Children's Day is included in the general admission price.
In addition there will be a Civil War Encampment June 24 - 25, also included in daily admission. The Civil War comes to life as the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. G, re-enactors encamp at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm. The 142nd portray as accurately as possible the drill and every day life of soldiers in the 1800’s. By doing this they honor those who fought and in turn give us a glimpse into local history.
The militia encampment is from 10:00 AM to 5 PM on Saturday and 12PM to 4:00 PM. on Sunday. Visitors can mingle with the re-enactors, who will share information on their lives and times as well as their clothing, their articles of war, and what the daily routine was like for a Civil War combatant. The 142nd encampment is a part of Quiet Valley’s summer “Highlight” program, which are special themed demonstrations that provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about traditional folk arts, heritage crafts, trades skills and typical activities of the 1800s.
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a non-profit, educational corporation dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. At Quiet Valley history comes to life on our 19th century farmstead. School and group tours are by reservation from Labor Day until June and tours for the general public run from the third Saturday in June through Labor Day Monday. Period-dressed “family” members reenact the life of the original Pennsylvania German farming family who lived on the farm from the late1760s to 1913. The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will again sponsor its once famous Duck Race on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 in conjunction with Bangor’s Downtown Block Party. The numbered ducks will be placed in the Martin’s Creek at the Penna. Avenue bridge and will continue their trek until they reach the library bridge at Broadway and Main Streets. Four cash prizes will be given out to the first four ducks to cross the finish line. A percentage of tickets sold will determine the purse.

The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE! The program runs June 12 through August 12. Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook. The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. Browns Presenting Letters to the Homefront
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers.
Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war.
As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed.
Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons.

The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Reservations are required and a light lunch will be provided. Tickets are available at Bray’s News, 36 Broadway and Heard’s Market, 501 South Main Street, both in Bangor, PA.
