Property Tax Referendum
When you vote this Tuesday, Nov. 7, you will be asked to vote “Yes” or “No” on the following ballot question:
“Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to permit the General Assembly to enact legislation authorizing local taxing authorities to exclude from taxation up to 100 percent of the assessed value of each homestead property within a local taxing jurisdiction, rather than limit the exclusion to one-half of the median assessed value of all homestead property, which is the existing law?”
If approved, this would be a major step toward allowing local governments the option of eliminating school property taxes on the house in which you live. It does not include second homes or commercial properties.
The ballot question by itself does not authorize local taxing authorities to make this change. Before you see any changes on your property tax bill, the General Assembly must pass a law which provides the guidelines for local taxing jurisdictions to eliminate property taxes. To replace the revenue lost from the elimination of school property taxes, state or local taxes could be implemented or increased to make up the deficit.
Local taxing authorities would continue to be prohibited from increasing the millage rate to pay for the homestead exclusion.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 5
George Foreman becomes oldest heavyweight champ 1994
On this day in 1994, George Foreman, age 45, becomes boxing’s oldest heavyweight champion when he defeats 26-year-old Michael Moorer in the 10th round of their WBA fight in Las Vegas. More than 12,000 spectators at the MGM Grand Hotel watched Foreman dethrone Moorer, who went into the fight with a 35-0 record. Foreman dedicated his upset win to “all my buddies in the nursing home and all the guys in jail.”
Born in 1949 in Marshal, Texas, Foreman had a troubled childhood and dropped out of high school. Eventually, he joined President Lyndon Johnson’s Jobs Corps work program and discovered a talent for boxing. “Big George,” as he was nicknamed, took home a gold medal for the U.S. at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. In 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, after winning his first 37 professional matches, 34 by knockout, Foreman KO’d “Smokin'” Joe Frazier after two rounds and was crowned heavyweight champ. At 1974’s “Rumble in the Jungle” in Kinshasha, Zaire, the younger, stronger Foreman suffered a surprising loss to underdog Muhammad Ali and was forced to relinquish his championship title. Three years later, Big George morphed from pugilist into preacher, when he had a religious experience in his dressing room after losing a fight. He retired from boxing, became an ordained minister in Houston and founded a youth center.
A decade later, the millions he’d made as a boxer gone, Foreman returned to the ring at age 38 and staged a successful comeback. When he won his second heavyweight title in his 1994 fight against Moorer, becoming the WBA and IBF champ, Foreman was wearing the same red trunks he’d had on the night he lost to Ali.

BASD Wellness Walking Programs
The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year.
Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies.
Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached.
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3 days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked per day)
Here you can find a way to compete among family members, friend groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!
