Cartwright Legislation to Protect Veterans Passes Committee
Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright’s bipartisan legislation to protect older, low-income veterans from financial scams passed the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The Veterans Care Financial Protection Act (H.R. 3122) would direct the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to work with other federal agencies and states to develop and implement standards that protect veterans from predatory practices. The VA offers an Aid & Attendance (A&A) benefit for veterans who qualify for a VA pension, and need financial help with in-home care or assisted living. The A&A application is free, but scam artists have targeted veterans and charged them to obtain these benefits. With this information, scammers can take hold of the veteran’s assets, and may even move them into an irrevocable trust or an annuity. This movement of assets may also disqualify the veteran from other assistance, such as Medicaid. “Scam artists are turning the well-deserved A&A benefit into a financial nightmare for those who can least afford it,” said Rep. Cartwright. “There needs to be greater safeguards for our veterans. This bipartisan, commonsense proposal will help protect veterans from financial scams. We owe this to our nation’s heroes.” Holiday Bazaar Families First will hold a Holiday Bazaar Vendor and Craft Fair on December 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wind Gap Middle School. The cost for vendor space is $20 a table. All proceeds will benefit Families First Holiday Adopt-A-Family program. Families First is a non-profit in the Pen Argyl Area School district that provides support to families and individuals in need, through a variety of means. Vendors will be selected in a first-come, first-served fashion. No two vendors of the same business will be permitted without prior approval in an effort to avoid duplication. Deposit leaves curbside for pickup. Please do not include sticks or brush with the leaves. The equipment is designed to pickup leaves. Other objects may damage the equipment. There is no set schedule for pickup. Weather conditions and the amount of leaves to be picked up will determine how quickly your leaves are collected. Roseto leaf Collection Roseto Borough has begun leaf collection, leaf collection will be conducted every Tuesday and Thursday weather permitting , please rake all your leaves to the edge of your property keeping in mind to watch out for sticks and debris. Pen Argyl leaf collection begins October 23 Pen Argyl leaf collection will begin October 23, there will be no collection the week of November 20, collection resumes on November 27 and will end December. Please note leaves will not be picked up if they have sticks, acorns or animal feces in the piles. These materials can cause malfunctions with the machinery and become dangerous to our employees. Avoid putting leaves out 2 days before rain or foul weather, especially in the hilly areas of the Borough. During storms leaf piles can clog storm basins and cause water damage to streets and private property. Whenever possible, park away from leaf piles so the workers can maneuver the equipment and clean up more thoroughly. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 22Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 In a televised speech of extraordinary gravity, President John F. Kennedy announces that U.S. spy planes have discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba. These missile sites—under construction but nearing completion—housed medium-range missiles capable of striking a number of major cities in the United States, including Washington, D.C. Kennedy announced that he was ordering a naval “quarantine” of Cuba to prevent Soviet ships from transporting any more offensive weapons to the island and explained that the United States would not tolerate the existence of the missile sites currently in place. The president made it clear that America would not stop short of military action to end what he called a “clandestine, reckless, and provocative threat to world peace.” What is known as the Cuban Missile Crisis actually began on October 15, 1962—the day that U.S. intelligence personnel analyzing U-2 spy plane data discovered that the Soviets were building medium-range missile sites in Cuba. The next day, President Kennedy secretly convened an emergency meeting of his senior military, political, and diplomatic advisers to discuss the ominous development. The group became known as ExCom, short for Executive Committee. After rejecting a surgical air strike against the missile sites, ExCom decided on a naval quarantine and a demand that the bases be dismantled and missiles removed. On the night of October 22, Kennedy went on national television to announce his decision. During the next six days, the crisis escalated to a breaking point as the world tottered on the brink of nuclear war between the two superpowers. On October 23, the quarantine of Cuba began, but Kennedy decided to give Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev more time to consider the U.S. action by pulling the quarantine line back 500 miles. By October 24, Soviet ships en route to Cuba capable of carrying military cargoes appeared to have slowed down, altered, or reversed their course as they approached the quarantine, with the exception of one ship—the tanker Bucharest. At the request of more than 40 nonaligned nations, U.N. Secretary-General U Thant sent private appeals to Kennedy and Khrushchev, urging that their governments “refrain from any action that may aggravate the situation and bring with it the risk of war.” At the direction of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. military forces went to DEFCON 2, the highest military alert ever reached in the postwar era, as military commanders prepared for full-scale war with the Soviet Union. The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year. Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies. Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached. 10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) has announced an Ogham Art Class on November 1, 2017, at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St, Bethlehem PA 18015. Members of the audience will enjoy a fun night of learning about Ogham alphabet, which was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and read from bottom to top. Dr. Javier Ávila, author, poet, and professor of English at Northampton Community College, will present his acclaimed one man show, The Trouble with My Name, on Thursday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center. Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila was named the 2015 PA Professor of the Year, the first Latino to ever receive the award. Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres. The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography. Ávila, a renowned poet and novelist, achieved international recognition when his bestselling novel "Different" became an award-winning motion picture, "Miente," which was screened in over a dozen countries. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM. The PoconoArts staff will manage the store 10AM-4PM, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours handled by volunteers. Fees for participation are:
