Cub Scout Pack 102 Launches STEM Program
Cub Scout Pack 102 is launching their STEM program on Saturday October 21st, 2017. STEM focuses on the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. On October 12, 2017, at Forks of the Delaware District-Minsi Trail Council Roundtable meeting, Cub Master, Tony Zedar gave a presentation about the STEM program. Mr. Zedar encouraged other Packs to start similar programs. Mr. Zedar spoke about the importance of engaging the youth in STEM activities at a young age, to better prepare them for careers ranging from construction to computer programming. The newly re-chartered Pack 102 believes that part of the value of the Scouting Program(s) lies in preparing children to become active, productive members of their community. “Scouting has always used fun activities to teach practical skills,” said Jana Morris Sarnowski, the Committee Chair. “We think the STEM program compliments and enriches the lessons already built into Scouting.” Mr. Zedar, is one of the instructors of the STEM program and describes the STEM program like this, “To me, it’s about getting the kids to think deeper about things that happen in everyday life. Things like, what causes the rain to fall and what impact does throwing garbage out of the car have?” Mr. Rob Sarnowski, another STEM instructor at Pack 102 says “Kids are naturally curious and are great at asking questions. We hope that the STEM program teaches the Scouts not only to ask questions, but we want to give them the tools to think about problems and how to solve them.” The upcoming STEM meeting will teach Scouts about the water conservation. Instruction will center around an activity that demonstrates the water cycle, a brief video and discussion. Future sessions will explore Technology in the form of computers and software, Mathematics and Engineering. Tony Zedar believes that learning should incorporate fun activity (SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS!) and the big goal is not only to have the Scouts ask questions, but start to learn how to apply STEM principles to find the answers. By getting the kids thinking about how the world works, new levels of meaning in classic Scouting activities like the Pinewood Derby are revealed. In addition to being a fun event where the Scouts get to show off their car’s looks and speed, Pack 102 wants to show how things like inertia, aero dynamics and friction affect the outcome of the race. Consistent with their Community building approach, Pack 102 invites members of other cub scout packs to attend the STEM sessions. The sessions provide the Scouts an opportunity to achieve individual Scouting Awards. The STEM program is geared for Wolves through Webelos. The first session is being held Saturday, October 21st, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. Trinity Lutheran is located at 404 Broadway, Bangor, PA. For more information contact Tony Zedar at 610-462-3818. Hope to see you there! In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work. Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates of Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, bangorslaters.com, click on the Alumni icon (under Quick Links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. The form must be filled out completely for your nominee to be considered. Mail the completed form to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to [email protected] October 16 Regular EventsBingo - Kunkletown Fire Co. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 16The Long March 1934 The embattled Chinese Communists break through Nationalist enemy lines and begin an epic flight from their encircled headquarters in southwest China. Known as Ch’ang Cheng—the “Long March”—the retreat lasted 368 days and covered 6,000 miles, nearly twice the distance from New York to San Francisco. Civil war in China between the Nationalists and the Communists broke out in 1927. In 1931, Communist leader Mao Zedong was elected chairman of the newly established Soviet Republic of China, based in Kiangsi province in the southwest. Between 1930 and 1934, the Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek launched a series of five encirclement campaigns against the Soviet Republic. Under the leadership of Mao, the Communists employed guerrilla tactics to resist successfully the first four campaigns, but in the fifth, Chiang raised 700,000 troops and built fortifications around the Communist positions. Hundreds of thousands of peasants were killed or died of starvation in the siege, and Mao was removed as chairman by the Communist Central Committee. The new Communist leadership employed more conventional warfare tactics, and its Red Army was decimated. With defeat imminent, the Communists decided to break out of the encirclement at its weakest points. The Long March began at 5:00 p.m. on October 16, 1934. Secrecy and rear-guard actions confused the Nationalists, and it was several weeks before they realized that the main body of the Red Army had fled. The retreating force initially consisted of 86,000 troops, 15,000 personnel, and 35 women. Weapons and supplies were borne on men’s backs or in horse-drawn carts, and the line of marchers stretched for 50 miles. The Communists generally marched at night, and when the enemy was not near, a long column of torches could be seen snaking over valleys and hills into the distance. REAL ID Grace Period Extended Pennsylvania residents who need REAL ID to access certain federal facilities now have a grace period through Jan. 22, 2018, according to an announcement this week by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This grace period went into effect Oct. 11. PennDOT submitted an extension request to the federal agency in early September and is currently awaiting its response. The enforcement grace period applies only to entrance to federal facilities. There is no enforcement on commercial air travel until Jan. 22, 2018. In the meantime, PennDOT will continue to apply for an extension for commercial air traffic through Oct. 1, 2020. All extensions are at the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security. PennDOT has begun work on the implementation of REAL ID, and estimates REAL ID-compliant driver licenses and identification cards will be available at the customer’s option in March 2019. This will allow ample time for customers who want a REAL ID product to get one before the final DHS effective date of Oct. 1, 2020. Information on REAL ID in Pennsylvania, including frequently asked questions, is available at www.dmv.pa.gov.
