Save Money with These Fall Purchases
Every season has its unique treasure trove of bargains to be found, and fall is no exception. Even if “reuse” and “repurpose” is your M.O., you know that when it comes to certain items, you have to buy new. But paying retail doesn’t mean you have to empty your wallet, either. It’s knowing when to shop to get the best deals.
If you need to purchase any of these items, fall is the best season to shop around. Porch and Patio Furniture – Summer may be over according to the calendar, and that means retailers will slash prices on patio tables and chairs, as well as lawn and porch furniture, to make room for winter inventory. Pick up that patio set you’ve had your eye on now. Luckily, milder days can stick around as late as November (hello Indian Summer!), so you’ll be able to enjoy your purchase for some time before it has to be packed away until next season. Barbecue Grills – As with patio furniture, retailers need to move what they consider “summer” items, so the best bargains on barbecue grills can be found in fall. Bicycles – Each fall, sporting goods stores also change their displays, replacing warm weather toys with winter gear. This is the best time to shop bicycles and bike accessories like helmets and child seats. Take advantage of even further deals by making an offer on those already-assembled floor displays taking up space. Lawn Mowers – Grass mowing season is winding down, so home & garden and farm supply stores reduce the prices on their inventory of lawn mowers to make room for snow blowers, snow throwers, and other winter machines. This is an extra boon for those who know that a lawn mower acts as a great leaf mulcher throughout the fall! New Cars – Car dealers generally discount their car inventory on the lot as early as September, before the new models are released. If you’re looking to purchase a new car, fall is the perfect time to negotiate that great deal. Airline Tickets and Vacation Packages – Because fewer people travel in fall, the best prices on airline tickets and vacation packages can generally be found anytime after Labor Day and extending just prior to Thanksgiving. Wine – As the current year’s wines are making their way to store shelves, the existing stock needs to move. To free up shelf space, retailers often offer discounts so you can often get your favorite burgundy at a bargain. Candy – Prices on bags of individually wrapped candy are usually slashed the day after Halloween, to make room for the holiday candies. It’s a great time to stock up on your favorite treats, or to fill the candy jar at work. Celtic Cultural Alliance Ogham Art Class The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) has announced an Ogham Art Class on November 1, 2017, at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St, Bethlehem PA 18015. Members of the audience will enjoy a fun night of learning about Ogham alphabet, which was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and read from bottom to top. After that, the audience will create and take home your own painting. This is suitable for ages 16 and up. The cost of the class is $30, which includes materials’ fees. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will hold their Fall “Meet the Author” on Saturday, November 11, 2017 @ 10:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 404 Broadway, Bangor. Pa. Featured author will be local businessman Joe DeFranco. Mr. DeFranco will present his book: Growing Up in the Butcher Shop. Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him. All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley Times, Slate Belt Town Topics, The Belt & Beyond, and subsequently publishing his own book. Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. Pocono Arts Holiday Store
The Pocono Arts Council will host its annual Holiday Store in The ARTSPACE Gallery located at 18 N. 7th Street in Stroudsburg. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors. Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM. The American Legion Riders have their monthly meeting on Sunday, October 8 at 10:30 AM at the American Legion Post 927, Route 209 and Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert. The American Legion Riders are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children's hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships, and enjoy riding. Learn the basics of special effect masks and makeup prosthetics to create a one-of-a-kind Halloween Zombie. Michael Bianco, resin casting instructor in the Fab Lab, will teach you how easy it is to achieve the Hollywood style effects just in time for your extraordinary Halloween costume! Wounds, decay, lacerations, bullet holes, and even bite marks are all part of the class. The Fab Lab is located on the 3rd floor of the Fowler Family Southside Center. The Lab offers resources ranging from metalworking, woodshop, 3D printing, laser cutting, audio engineering, guitar-making, robotics and more. October 15th -21st, 2017 October 15th thru the 21st will be “National Friends of the Library Week”. Locally, the Friends of the Bangor Public Library, are a vibrant and industrious group of volunteers. As a means of garnering funds for the library the Friends conduct the following events each year: two “Used Books Sales” one at the Bee Hive the first week in May and at the Blue Valley Farm Show, two “Brunch with the Authors” featuring local literary artists, The Annual Downtown “Duck Race”, “Breakfast with Santa” the first Saturday in December, a Fall “Bake Sale”, and “Wine Tasting” event in November. The Friends also produce a Newsletter four times a year. 100% of the proceeds they raise are given to the Bangor library for operating expenses. This year, the Friends, are also initiating a major project to upgrade the children’s reading section. The Friends meet the 4th Thursday @ 7:00 PM and invite anyone who is interested in joining to attend. Associate members are also accepted to help with the fund raising projects. Talking Peace, a Peace and Justice Conference, is set for October 19 at Northampton Community College. It is the eighth annual Peace and Justice Conference to take place at the College and will focus on 50 years of peace and justice activism in the United States. Events and displays will encourage empathy across cultures and appreciation of the roots of today’s activism from 50 years ago to coincide with NCC’s 50th anniversary. The event will begin in the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall on the Bethlehem Campus at 9:30 – 11 a.m. The Keynote speaker will be announced as the event nears. Pen Argyl leaf collection will begin October 23, there will be no collection the week of November 20, collection resumes on November 27 and will end December. Please note leaves will not be picked up if they have sticks, acorns or animal feces in the piles. These materials can cause malfunctions with the machinery and become dangerous to our employees. Avoid putting leaves out 2 days before rain or foul weather, especially in the hilly areas of the Borough. During storms leaf piles can clog storm basins and cause water damage to streets and private property. Whenever possible, park away from leaf piles so the workers can maneuver the equipment and clean up more thoroughly. The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) has announced an Ogham Art Class on November 1, 2017, at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St, Bethlehem PA 18015. Members of the audience will enjoy a fun night of learning about Ogham alphabet, which was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and read from bottom to top. After that, the audience will create and take home your own painting. This is suitable for ages 16 and up. The cost of the class is $30, which includes materials’ fees. Meet the Author Featuring Joe DeFranco The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will hold their Fall “Meet the Author” on Saturday, November 11, 2017 @ 10:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 404 Broadway, Bangor. Pa. Featured author will be local businessman Joe DeFranco. Mr. DeFranco will present his book: Growing Up in the Butcher Shop. Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him. All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley Times, Slate Belt Town Topics, The Belt & Beyond, and subsequently publishing his own book. Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. Holiday Cash Bingo will be held by the Ladies Auxiliary at Washington Township Fire Co. on Route 191 South of Bangor Sunday, November 12. Doors open 11am, games start 12:30pm. The Pocono Arts Council will host its annual Holiday Store in The ARTSPACE Gallery located at 18 N. 7th Street in Stroudsburg. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors. Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM.
