Prevent Thanksgiving Bloat
Among other things, Thanksgiving usually serves up a large helping of post-holiday bloat. Between the juicy turkey, fluffy potatoes, and the standard table full of pies, attacking a Thanksgiving spread can leave your body feeling weighed down come Black Friday. So, how do you make sure you’re ready to hit the sales? We talked to The Nutrition Twins, certified dieticians Tammy Lakatos Shames and Lyssie Lakatos, to find out how to enjoy the holiday without feeling overstuffed.
Considering skipping breakfast to save room for stuffing? Bad idea. “Not only will you show up to the meal starving and completely overeat, but you’ll also justify eating more by saying, 'Oh, I skipped breakfast so I saved those calories,’” say the twins. Instead, they suggest sipping tea and choosing a small meal or snack full of fiber and protein to keep you full. “Hot tea is satisfying and also mentally calming, which is good for big, sometimes stressful family parties,” they suggest. If you need a snack, go for undressed vegetables of your choice and, their favorite: pistachios. “They’re super high in fiber and protein and you can have about 30 of them and it’s only 100 calories,” they add. The mass assortment of delicious foods on Thanksgiving spreads can be both exciting and intimidating. But instead of falling victim to food panic and grabbing one of everything, start with a strategy. “Focus on the things you really like to eat, instead of filling your plate with whatever looks good—everything will look good,” say the sisters. Choose four or five items you really want to try and then portion those out on your plate appropriately. The sisters suggest filling the majority of your plate with turkey, which is low cal and low fat, then go for veggies (green beans are particularly good for digestion), and use any leftover space for starchy foods like potatoes or dinner rolls. Gravy and turkey go together like PB and J, but flavoring your meat with cranberry sauce will potentially save you on calories and the excess sodium that’s usually found in gravies, the sisters tell InStyle. Drop the ranch dressing and stir cranberry sauce into your salad, too. Find a seat next to your most talkative aunt and gossip away. “When you focus on the people and conversation around you instead of just the food in front of you, your eating slows down,” say the twins. When you eat slower, you suck in less air that can lead to bloat, and you also give yourself time to feel full before stuffing your stomach to the point of discomfort. Don’t worry, there’s no need to skip the dessert table if you choose wisely. If offered an assortment of pies, pumpkin is the best, say the twins. It has fewer ingredients and is missing a top crust, which is usually laden with sugar and high-fat, hard-to-digest ingredients. Alcohol can tend to run freely at big family parties so be wary of what you’re sipping. “Stay away from mixed drinks, which can be full of high-sugar juice.” say the twins, who generally suggest limiting your alcohol intake to avoid too many empty calories. Bubbly beverages should also be sipped in limited quantities. “Anything with bubbles, like beer and champagne, will really do a number on your bloat factor.” Instead of slipping into a food coma in front of the football game, get some fresh air and go for a walk. “Exercise gets the blood flowing through the body, which helps gets your digestive system moving,” say the twins. “This will help get the food moving through the system and reduce fullness and bloating.” In addition, keeping up the momentum the next morning can help, too. Getting in a sweat will help flush out the high amount of salt consumed the day before.

101 Year-Old Veteran Honored
On Veterans Day weekend, State Rep. Marcia Hahn had the honor of meeting many men and women who serve or have served our country. State Rep. Steve Samuelson (D-Allentown) and Rep. Hahn began the day Friday, Nov. 10 at the Bethlehem Township Veterans Day celebration with Sgt. First Class Allen Benner and the township’s Assistant Manager Doug Bruce.
Later in the day, she presented 101-year-old Alois Himsl (pictured) with a pin recognizing him for his service in the Vietnam War. Alois is a somewhat unusual veteran, as his 26-year military career in the United States Army included tours of duty in World War Two, the Korean War and Vietnam War. Are you preparing the feast this Thanksgiving? Here are some conservation-minded, energy-wise kitchen tips for the holiday -- and throughout the year: Opening the oven door drops the temperature by about 25 degrees -- check through the window instead, and try to cook several items at once as long as there is room for air to circulate. A 6-inch pot or pan on an 8-inch burner wastes as much as 40 percent of energy, so match the pan to the size of the burner. Help your fridge and freezer be as efficient as possible by opening the door infrequently. Fill the sink instead of letting the water run while washing dishes, and run the dishwasher only when full. DCNR Grants Available PENNVEST-funded grants totaling $1 million are available to assist landowners with planting trees along streams in Pennsylvania to improve water quality. The grant round to apply closes December 20. Interested applicants should visit the DCNR grant portal webpage. Individual landowners, businesses, non-profit organizations, local governments, and educational institutions are all eligible for the buffer grants, but must be prequalified. Forest buffers along stream banks provide critical barriers between polluting landscapes and receiving waterways. Properly planted and maintained, streamside tree and shrub plantings:

Pennsylvania adult adoptees can now apply for and receive a copy of their original birth certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Act 127 of 2016 reinstated this access for the first time since 1984 to allow these adults to have the same access to the record as everyone else. The department began accepting early submissions this summer for processing now, and as of Oct. 31, 1,180 adoptees have already applied for a copy of their original birth certificate. Adoptees who submit applications on or after Nov. 3 should allow 45 days for processing. Under previous Pennsylvania law, adoptees could petition the courts for a copy of their original birth records; however, that request could have been denied by a judge. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 20Nuremberg trials begin 1945 Twenty-four high-ranking Nazis go on trial in Nuremberg, Germany, for atrocities committed during World War II. The Nuremberg Trials were conducted by an international tribunal made up of representatives from the United States, the Soviet Union, France, and Great Britain. It was the first trial of its kind in history, and the defendants faced charges ranging from crimes against peace, to crimes of war, to crimes against humanity. Lord Justice Geoffrey Lawrence, the British member, presided over the proceedings, which lasted 10 months and consisted of 216 court sessions. On October 1, 1946, 12 architects of Nazi policy were sentenced to death. Seven others were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 years to life, and three were acquitted. Of the original 24 defendants, one, Robert Ley, committed suicide while in prison, and another, Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, was deemed mentally and physically incompetent to stand trial. Among those condemned to death by hanging were Joachim von Ribbentrop, Nazi minister of foreign affairs; Hermann Goering, leader of the Gestapo and the Luftwaffe; Alfred Jodl, head of the German armed forces staff; and Wilhelm Frick, minister of the interior. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors.
Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM.

29th Annual Craft Show at Mt. Bethel Fire Co.
Mt. Bethel Fire Co. Ladies' Auxillary will hold its 29th Annual Craft Show on Saturday, November 25 from 9 am to 3 pm. Two rooms will be filled with over 100 crafters. The kitchen will be open for breakfast and lunch with take out available. There will be a bake sale table. Admission is free door prizes will be given away.
Christmas Tree Sale
The annual Christmas tree sale at Rescue Fire Co. begins November 25. Come to the fire house on Route 191 and meet Santa from 6-8pm. Free stuffed animal for the first 50 kids. Pres-school kids can enter to win a free Christmas Tree. Bring a home-made family ornament to decorate their tree.

On Friday, December 1 st at 6:30 PM, Pen Argyl Borough will host a very special evening at the Weona Park Community Center. Mayor Sabatine, Borough Council and the Pen Argyl Outreach Committee invites the families of Pen Argyl to attend the Pen Argyl’s Holiday Celebration at the Community Center located in Weona Park. Join friends, family and neighbors for a joyous holiday celebration.
As always, to get the community in the holiday spirit, Holiday carols will be sung and entertainment by Scott Wagstaff, ventriloquist. Santa Claus will be making a special trip to Pen Argyl to visit the good children of the Borough and will be giving small gifts to all the young children in attendance.
There will be free drinks and snacks. The goodies, drinks and gifts are being donated by local businesses and Pen Argyl Borough Council. BHS Band Winter Concert
Bangor Area High School bands will winter concert will be held on Friday, December 15 at 7:30pm in the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater at Bangor Area High School. The Concert and Symphonic Bands will each present their own portion of the concert. At the conclusion of the program, both groups will unite on stage for a grand finale complete with a Christmas Carol sing-along and our annual performance of Sleigh Ride conducted by a jolly special guest. National Free Throw Contest
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the Elks National Hoop Shoot to be held beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Washington Elementary School, 381 Washington Blvd, Bangor, PA. This Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13 and is free to all contestants. Registration will be open beginning at noon on December 16, 2017 at the school gymnasium. Beginning at the local level, winning contestants will advance through District, State, Regional, and National competitions. The Elks helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One boy and one girl from each division will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, provides a character-building, competitive experience for all contestants. Contestants learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship. The Bangor Lodge is a proud sponsor of this annual local event. Winners of this local event will represent our Lodge at the District Free throw competition, also being held at Washington Elementary on February 3, 2018. Irish Tin Whistle Workshop BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs. Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem. Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle. The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. POSITION: Head Football Coach EFFECTIVE: 2018-2019 School Year BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: To provide instruction regarding the knowledge and skills while participating in an activity of this kind. To provide the necessary supervision/direction for the participating students, both individually and as a group for school and athletic events throughout the year. REQUIREMENTS: Should possess the knowledge and skills associated with which to coach football. Should possess the ability to direct/supervise a program of this kind.
