Russo & American Way Going to Puerto Rico![]() Nick Russo and his American Way Disaster Relief team left for Puerto Rico Saturday to help those in need from the destruction of Hurricane Maria.
On his trip to Texas it was mentioned that the crew was returning and immediately heading to Florida. Although they had not discussed Florida at that point that's exactly what they did. This community came together AGAIN and raised a tremendous amount of donations for Florida. During all of this, people wanted to know when they were helping Puerto Rico. Russo says,"I honestly felt guilty. I wanted to help Puerto Rico but logistical issues made it seem almost impossible." He is now proud to say that, and with the help of some great volunteers at his newly formed non-profit #AmericanWayDisasterRelief, they are on their way to bring relief to the Puerto Rican people. Even though they left yesterday, if you are interested in donating toward this cause you can send relief items directly to their contact on the ground at the following address: Raquel Leon Attn: Jason Maddy, PO Box 9887, San Juan, PR 00908. If you are interested in donating toward this cause financially, you can use the following link: https://www.youcaring.com/americanwaydisasterrelief-1014350?utm_campaign=buttonshare&utm_medium=url&utm_source=copy&utm_content=cf_cp_01 The American Way Disaster Relief was formed after two successful trips to provide relief supplies to the south in the wake of several hurricanes. During these trips to Texas and Florida, founding members of American Way provided thousands of pounds of goods directly to communities and families in need. In Puerto Rico, they plan to assist teams already in place on the ground. American Way will be assisting in operations in mountainous regions of the island. providing much needed supplies to hard to reach communities. Daily missions include: making contact with persons in need of medical supplies, distribution of water and food, distribution of medicine, working with doctors and medical personnel, gathering intelligence on roads, bridges, and washouts to pass up to local and federal agencies. It is American Way's vision that no matter where you are, if you are in need during a crisis, relief is only a phone call or email away. They do this by creating an expanding a network of volunteers and donors nationwide. Their ever-expanding network helps them locate people in need and get them the aid or supplies needed. It has also proved vital in assisting other agencies and organizations during disaster situations. Indulgent grandparents could be bad![]() For many kids, trips to their grandparents' house often means sugary treats or extra TV time that may not be allowed at home.
But new research suggests such indulgent behavior can have long-term consequences. The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, finds that the spoiling of grandchildren by their grandparents may inadvertently have a negative impact on children's health – even their risk of eventually developing cancer. Researchers from the University of Glasgow reviewed 56 studies with data from 18 countries on the care provided by grandparents who are not the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. The data showed that overall, grandparents' habits were negatively influencing their grandchildren's health in the areas of weight and diet – through "treating," overfeeding, and lack of physical activity. Grandparents' tobacco habits also put kids at risk, the study found. Smoking, diet, a lack of physical activity, along with excess weight, have all been identified as risk factors for serious health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. "Children should never be exposed to second hand smoke," Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK's prevention expert, said in a statement about the findings. "With both smoking and obesity being the two biggest preventable causes of cancer in the UK, it's important for the whole family to work together." Many lifelong behaviors – both healthy and unhealthy – are learned from an early age from family members. The study authors say that until now, research has largely focused on the role of parents and there has been only limited analysis of the potential impact of part-time caregivers such as grandparents. They say the data suggests that the risks associated with grandparents' behavior are inadvertent. "While the results of this review are clear that behavior such as exposure to smoking and regularly treating children increases cancer risks as children grow into adulthood, it is also clear from the evidence that these risks are unintentional," lead author Dr. Stephanie Chambers said in a statement. "Currently grandparents are not the focus of public health messaging targeted at parents and in light of the evidence from this study, perhaps this is something that needs to change given the prominent role grandparents play in the lives of children," she continued. The researchers pointed out that, of course, grandparents play a beneficial role in children's lives in many other ways. Spending time with grandma and grandpa can enhance kids'"social and emotional wellbeing," they write in the study, "and therefore, any recommendation to limit grandparent interaction with their grandchildren would be misplaced." Societal changes, including having more women in the workforce, increased childcare costs, and a rise in single parenting have led families to lean more on grandparents for caregiving needs. As a result, Chambers said that even when grandparents' less-than-optimal practices – including exposing kids to smoking and overfeeding them – were causing tension within the family, many parents often found it difficult to have conversations about them. However, "given that many parents now rely on grandparents for care, the mixed messages about health that children might be getting is perhaps an important discussion that needs to be had," she said. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 19Lincoln delivers Gettysburg Address 1863 On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most memorable speeches in American history. In just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly reminded a war-weary public why the Union had to fight, and win, the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg, fought some four months earlier, was the single bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Over the course of three days, more than 45,000 men were killed, injured, captured or went missing. The battle also proved to be the turning point of the war: General Robert E. Lee’s defeat and retreat from Gettysburg marked the last Confederate invasion of Northern territory and the beginning of the Southern army’s ultimate decline. Charged by Pennsylvania’s governor, Andrew Curtin, to care for the Gettysburg dead, an attorney named David Wills bought 17 acres of pasture to turn into a cemetery for the more than 7,500 who fell in battle. Wills invited Edward Everett, one of the most famous orators of the day, to deliver a speech at the cemetery’s dedication. Almost as an afterthought, Wills also sent a letter to Lincoln—just two weeks before the ceremony—requesting “a few appropriate remarks” to consecrate the grounds. In Case You Missed It......
