Bangor's Links to the NCAA Title
by Larry Cory Until 2016, only Gina Lucrezi of DeSales and Emily Howell of ESU were the only former Bangor athletes to win an NCAA national championship. Lucrezi won the 1,500-meter run in the 2004 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships and Howell’s 2015 ESU Field Hockey team won the DII NCAA national title. Lauren Zengulis duplicated that feat when Shippensburg won the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship in 2016. When the Raiders won an NCAA title in 2017, Zengulis became the only former Slater to win two NCAA national championships. Former BAHS athletes Jason Marraccini (1997) and Rep. Joe Emrick (1990) playing for Lycoming both lost in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Division III football title game. Nonetheless, Maraccini, and Emrick join Lucrezi, Howell and Zengulis in an elite group as the only known players in Bangor High School history to play in a NCAA title competition. Zengulis is also part of an elite group of four former Bangor field hockey players to be part of the 2017 NCAA Division II Field Hockey championships. When the Raiders played Stonehill College the Skyhawks were coached by 2006 Bangor grad, Susan Ciufo .After beating Stonehill, Shippensburg would play East Stroudsburg University in Louisville, Kentucky. The Warrior coaching staff included former Slaters, Emily Boyle and Howell. By coincidence, Ciufo was inducted into the Bangor Hall of Fame the same weekend that her team played Shippensburg. Her former coach, Carol Alfred, was also inducted into the Slater Hall of Fame at the same time. Coach Alfred, in fact, also coached Boyle, Howell and Zengulis at some point during their careers making the 2017 playoff coincidence even greater. More than the coincidence is the fact all four continued their field hockey careers at a higher level. “Since Washington elementary school I can remember relating everything to sports, Zengulis said. “Whether it was a paper or project it had to revolve (around) my dream of playing for a championship winning team. Playing sports at Bangor gave me the drive to want to continue my career.” Zengulis also gives credit to Coach Alfred. “I committed to the Shippensburg field hockey team knowing that they were a highly successful program with strong core values, said Zengulis. “ Coming from a program like Coach Alfred built at Bangor made me want to continue my career on a team just like her’s.” What Are Frankincense And Myrrh? Farmers' Almanac
We all know what gold is. But what are the other two gifts the Magi brought to baby Jesus? Frankincense and myrrh have a distinguished history that dates back to ancient biblical times. They are best known historically as the precious gifts presented to the Christ child by the Wise Men, along with gold (Matthew 2:11). Have you ever wondered why the Wise Men chose frankincense and myrrh as gifts? Both were valuable commodities that were exported by camel caravans throughout the known world. Only royalty or the wealthy could afford either, making them a fitting gift for the King of Kings. There are many biblical and other ancient references to frankincense and myrrh. These costly commodities were used not only by the ancient Hebrews, but by the Egyptians and Romans as well. Both were used in embalming and burned as incense for fragrance, purification and in religious rites. Frankincense was used extensively as medicine. The resin was chewed for digestive issues. Ancient Egyptian queens and pharaohs used frankincense and myrrh topically for skin care and rejuvenation, in cosmetics and facial masks. The dark eyeliner that Egyptian royalty wore thickly around their eyes was referred to as kohl. It was made from charred powder from burned Frankincense resin. Frankincense and myrrh are derived from the resin of trees. Myrrh comes from an Arabian tree known as Balsamodendron myrrh. However, there is no tree known as a frankincense tree. It is derived from the Boswellia trees. It became known as frank + incense because of the prominent odor and steady, long lasting flame it gives when burned. To extract frankincense and myrrh, incisions are made in the tree bark. The sap oozes from the cuts and hardens into beads of resin. The resin is harvested and used in a variety of applications. Fortunately we don’t have to rely on camel caravans to deliver these beneficial resins and oils. Frankincense and myrrh are typically sold by herbal companies in volatile (essential) oils, resin and powder form. Frankincense essential oil can be diffused to relieve respiratory issues such as colds and asthma, or for its relaxing, focus enhancing aroma. Added to salves or carrier oils, it is used to treat dry skin and enhance the healing of skin abrasions. A drop of frankincense essential oil can be taken daily in a spoon of honey, coconut oil or in a glass of water to boost the immune system. Current research on frankincense and other essential oils are revealing promising findings. Certain species of frankincense have been found to aide digestion, effectively treat asthma, arthritis, ulcerative colitis, kill cancer cells and prevent the growth of tumors. In clinical trials, it was reported to reduce cerebral swelling in brain cancer patients. Myrrh essential oil can be diffused to relieve respiratory issues, sooth mucus membranes or to enhance focusing and centering. Myrrh is used in various cosmetic and skin care applications to promote healthy, youthful skin. Myrrh is valued for promoting oral health and is used in oil pulling, mouthwash, throat lozenges and toothpaste. It is used to relieve sore throats, toothache, mouth ulcers, and as a breath freshener. A drop of myrrh essential oil can be taken orally in a spoon of honey, coconut oil or in a glass of water to bolster the immune system, and protect your body from infection. Myrrh has many beneficial properties: antioxidant, antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and is an expectorant. In recent studies myrrh was found to effectively kill breast and skin cancer cells. NOTE: Use of frankincense or myrrh essential oil is not recommended when pregnant or nursing or by those six years of age or under. This article is not a complete report on frankincense or myrrh, nor is it a guide to usage, and is not intended as medical advice. Keeping Our Kids Healthy
To help ensure coverage of the popular and successful Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), legislation is currently on the governor’s desk to extend the program for two more years. For 25 years, CHIP has provided insurance coverage to uninsured children and teens (up to age 19) whose families earn too much to qualify for Medical Assistance, but who cannot afford to purchase private insurance. CHIP is supported by both state and federal funds and provides payment for health care coverage for eligible children who meet income and other criteria. More than 180,000 children are currently enrolled in CHIP. Please click here for more information about CHIP. Beginning January 10th, A Clean Slate will once again partner with Bloom Creative Studios to offer a six week Life Coaching and Art Journaling series. The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm Additionally, on January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th. All of these classes are free, open to the public (16 years or older). For more information or to reserve your space in either of these offerings, contact [email protected] or call (610)452-9348 THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 17First airplane flies 1903 Near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight in history of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft. Orville piloted the gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight. Orville and Wilbur Wright grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and developed an interest in aviation after learning of the glider flights of the German engineer Otto Lilienthal in the 1890s. Unlike their older brothers, Orville and Wilbur did not attend college, but they possessed extraordinary technical ability and a sophisticated approach to solving problems in mechanical design. They built printing presses and in 1892 opened a bicycle sales and repair shop. Soon, they were building their own bicycles, and this experience, combined with profits from their various businesses, allowed them to pursue actively their dream of building the world’s first airplane. After exhaustively researching other engineers’ efforts to build a heavier-than-air, controlled aircraft, the Wright brothers wrote the U.S. Weather Bureau inquiring about a suitable place to conduct glider tests. They settled on Kitty Hawk, an isolated village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, which offered steady winds and sand dunes from which to glide and land softly. Their first glider, tested in 1900, performed poorly, but a new design, tested in 1901, was more successful. Later that year, they built a wind tunnel where they tested nearly 200 wings and airframes of different shapes and designs. The brothers’ systematic experimentations paid off–they flew hundreds of successful flights in their 1902 glider at Kill Devils Hills near Kitty Hawk. Their biplane glider featured a steering system, based on a movable rudder, that solved the problem of controlled flight. They were now ready for powered flight. Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness

Life Coaching & Art Journaling Series
The arrival of the New Year is often accompanied by New resolve, New direction, New plans and sometimes a New lease on life. A Clean Slate, the Slate Belt’s Addiction Recovery Center, looks to the New Year as a time to offer New Opportunity! Two programs will begin in January that interface the arts with life skills, introspection and personal development.
Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm
