Ring in the New Year with Friends
New Year’s Eve is the last hurrah of the holiday season. Whether you want to hang at home and recoup from the holidays or hit the town to end the season on a high note, either option is best celebrated with your best friends. We’ve thought up some fun and unique ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve with your BFFs that will cap off your holiday season with a bang! New Year’s Eve is a great excuse to party with your friends. You’re usually coming off of a full family-filled week and in need of some of socialization with people who aren’t Dad and Grandma Mary. Plan your New Year’s before the holiday rush sets in so your stress levels don’t spike again while you scramble to pull something together on the morning of the 31st. Depending on what you all get up to, make sure you have a designated driver or are taking public transportation. Planning out how everyone is getting to the location is vital on the craziest night of the year. Send word to all your besties that you’re hanging out and ringing in the New Year together. Pop the champagne and let’s get into this list. Throw a formal dress-up party. Even if you’re just planning on gossiping, drinking wine, and eating cheese, dressing up in formal attire can make the evening that much more enjoyable — and the gossip that much more dramatic. Better yet, cohost a formal-themed party with your friends and ask guests to arrive in cocktail dresses and suits, or tell them to take their old prom dress out of the closet. You can decorate your place with cool-toned party lights, a shimmery photo backdrop, and play some classy Frank Sinatra tunes. But you can buy the cheap wine. We won’t tell! Plan a classic game night. When you’re planning on spending more than a few hours with your BFFs, having a games on tap is a great way to pass time until midnight. Boardgames like Monopoly and Settlers of Catan can keep you occupied for hours. Or get physical with Twister. You could even take things outside and plan a city-wide scavenger hunt if the weather permits. Your teams can all meet up at your local late-night hangout to watch the ball drop. Hold a mixologist contest. Think Iron Chef but with a lot more booze. Tell your friends to bring their A-game and a drink recipe that they think will reign supreme. Throw a New Year’s Eve-related theme or a special ingredient into the mix to make the challenge more, well, challenging! Have your friends bring their own ingredients to make the game fair and create a rating system depending on how many people are competing (1 to 5, etc.). Then assign each number in your rating system a point value with 1 being the highest amount of points and the highest number the least. Rank the drinks according to your rating system, tally up the points, and see who wins! Slumber party like it's 2002. When we were kids our parents let us have some bomb slumber parties with our besties on New Year’s Eve. It was one of the rare occasions we could stay up after midnight and not be scolded. Bring back those nostalgic memories with a living room slumber party this New Year’s Eve. Tell friends to bring their best onesie pajamas, fave stuffed animals, and stock up on the popcorn and soda. The best part is — you’re actually adults so mom and dad can’t tell you to go to sleep when 12:30 AM rolls around! Get glammed up and go out on the town. This is the one night in the year that you can wear your flashiest outfit, the heels, the done up hair — and all that glittery makeup — and get away with it. Invite your friends over for a “getting-ready party” with the intent to go out and cause a scene with your good looks. You can start early and make dinner, do face masks, and then spend extra time on makeup and hair. Sip champagne like the classy ladies you are and then hit the town. It’s simple, yet super fun. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, and wear layers. Registration is required. Book Review "The Lost City of the Monkey God" by Douglas Preston review by Sonya Pin If you are a fan of Indiana Jones and lost arks, doomed temples, and crystal skulls, The Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston is for you. This tale, however, is true. In 2016, Preston joined an expedition to seek out the legendary Cuidad Blanco (White City) in the jungles of Honduras. Before the expedition ever landed on site, there were the logistics-- finding the money, getting the permits to dig, recruiting the expertise. Once on the ground the group endured relentless rain, forest so thick that sunlight barely penetrated and fer de lance (one of the earth’s most poisonous snakes) that measured six feet long. It was an historical find and quickly needed to be protected. The greatest threats to the site were and are from looters, clear cutting gangs who want the land for timber and cattle and narco trafficers. At home the adventure continued. Controversy arose among scholars and native rights advocates. Who were the original inhabitants of the White City? Who has the right to excavate the site? Should items be removed or kept in situ? The academic squabbles made national news. Almost all of the archeological team was stricken with a life-threatening pathogen that required and still requires the intervention of the National Institute of Health. Preston leaves no doubt that his experience in Honduras looking for the lost city of the monkey god was unforgettable. There is mystery and danger and it seems to be the real deal. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 29First commercial movie screened 1895 On this day in 1895, the world’s first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was made by Louis and Auguste Lumiere, two French brothers who developed a camera-projector called the Cinematographe. The Lumiere brothers unveiled their invention to the public in March 1895 with a brief film showing workers leaving the Lumiere factory. On December 28, the entrepreneurial siblings screened a series of short scenes from everyday French life and charged admission for the first time. Movie technology has its roots in the early 1830s, when Joseph Plateau of Belgium and Simon Stampfer of Austria simultaneously developed a device called the phenakistoscope, which incorporated a spinning disc with slots through which a series of drawings could be viewed, creating the effect of a single moving image. The phenakistoscope, considered the precursor of modern motion pictures, was followed by decades of advances and in 1890, Thomas Edison and his assistant William Dickson developed the first motion-picture camera, called the Kinetograph. The next year, 1891, Edison invented the Kinetoscope, a machine with a peephole viewer that allowed one person to watch a strip of film as it moved past a light. In 1894, Antoine Lumiere, the father of Auguste (1862-1954) and Louis (1864-1948), saw a demonstration of Edison’s Kinetoscope. The elder Lumiere was impressed, but reportedly told his sons, who ran a successful photographic plate factory in Lyon, France, that they could come up with something better. Louis Lumiere’s Cinematographe, which was patented in 1895, was a combination movie camera and projector that could display moving images on a screen for an audience. The Cinematographe was also smaller, lighter and used less film than Edison’s technology.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Two programs will begin in January that interface the arts with life skills, introspection and personal development.
Beginning January 10th, A Clean Slate will once again partner with Bloom Creative Studios to offer a six week Life Coaching and Art Journaling series. The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm

Creative Drama Workshop
On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

The hike will be about two miles. Bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.
8th Annual Snow Ball Dinner Dance
Families First will present their 8th Annual Benefit Snow Ball Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dance will be held at the Weona Park Recreation Center in Pen Argyl. Dinner will be provided by Just in Thyme and the music will be DJ Joe Franzo & Karaoke. There will be basket raffles and door prizes. The event is BYOB. Please dress casual. Tickets are $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door. This event is available to all members of the public and will include updates from Penn State Extension, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and Berks County Conservation District. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Spotted Lanternfly regardless of home county and quarantine. Bring your questions and join us for discussions on the current status of this invasive insect, information on the quarantine, preparation for insect control in the 2018 season, and how individuals and communities can help stop the spread of this insect. Lunch and handouts are included.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
