NCC to Hold Youth Chess Tournament at NCC
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, today from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. The College is located at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Participants will play five rounds in unrated and rated sections. Trophies and prizes will be awarded as well as random prize drawings.

Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company will hold their annual holiday craft and vendor event today from 9 am to 3 pm in Charter's Banquet Facility at Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company.
Quality artisans, hand crafters, and vendors, as well as many Direct Selling Home Businesses, and local non-profit groups will be setup from 9am to 3pm. The fire company will be serving breakfast and lunch. They will also be hosting the annual raffle for the show.
There are several new additions to this year’s show, including a Children’s coloring contest with prizes in three age groups.
Santa will arrive at noon! He will visit from 12 pm to 2 pm, and each child will receive a small gift from Santa. Families are encouraged to bring their cameras as this is a FREE photo opportunity for all! No mall lines, no charge for a holiday photo!

The 100% Mobile Simulation System with IR Laser & HD projection technology provides an exciting and safe, non lethal shooting environment. This is a one of a kind mobile range, NEW to this area, and we are hoping to get a great turnout for it as well as review of it! Soviets End Hungarian revolution 1956
A spontaneous national uprising that began 12 days before in Hungary is viciously crushed by Soviet tanks and troops on this day in 1956. Thousands were killed and wounded and nearly a quarter-million Hungarians fled the country.
The problems in Hungary began in October 1956, when thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding a more democratic political system and freedom from Soviet oppression. In response, Communist Party officials appointed Imre Nagy, a former premier who had been dismissed from the party for his criticisms of Stalinist policies, as the new premier. Nagy tried to restore peace and asked the Soviets to withdraw their troops. The Soviets did so, but Nagy then tried to push the Hungarian revolt forward by abolishing one-party rule. He also announced that Hungary was withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact (the Soviet bloc’s equivalent of NATO).
On November 4, 1956, Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to crush, once and for all, the national uprising. Vicious street fighting broke out, but the Soviets’ great power ensured victory. At 5:20 a.m., Hungarian Prime Minister Imre Nagy announced the invasion to the nation in a grim, 35-second broadcast, declaring: “Our troops are fighting. The Government is in place.” Within hours, though, Nagy sought asylum at the Yugoslav Embassy in Budapest. He was captured shortly thereafter and executed two years later. Nagy’s former colleague and imminent replacement, János Kádár, who had been flown secretly from Moscow to the city of Szolnok, 60 miles southeast of the capital, prepared to take power with Moscow’s backing.

The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year.
Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies.
Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached.
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, on Saturday, November 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. The College is located at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Participants will play five rounds in unrated and rated sections. Trophies and prizes will be awarded as well as random prize drawings.

On Saturday, November 4th, 2017 Upper Mount Bethel Township will be hosting its first Fall Festival from 1-5 pm at the Chelsea Sun Inn, 487 Stone Church Drive in Mount Bethel. There will be pumpkin picking and painting, a petting zoo, face painting, hay rides, music, a 50/50 raffle and a Tricky Tray.
Tickets will be sold at the event for these features as well as refreshments and food! A FREE Touch-a-Truck exhibit sponsored by Upper Mount Bethel Township will be on-site and will include road crew vehicles, local fire trucks and other vehicles.
All proceeds from the event will be shared equally between two local non-profits, Nick Russo’s American Way Disaster Relief and Bloom Bangor. American Way Disaster Relief brings essential supplies to victims of natural disaster, specifically those harmed by the recent hurricanes. Bloom Bangor is a two-year residential recovery program for survivors of addiction, trauma and human trafficking. We will also collect non-perishable food items for PUMP, the Portland Upper Mount Bethel Food Pantry.

NCC’s Fab Lab Solidworks Certification Prep
Northampton Community College’s Fab Lab will have classes for Solidworks Certification Preparation at the Fowler Family Southside Center beginning on November 6 at 6:30 p.m. Learn basic 3D modeling techniques. Sketching on planes and surfaces, sketch relationships (coincident, colinear, tangent, horizontal, vertical, concentric, offset, parallel, etc), and dimensioning. Explore the extruded boss and extruded cut feature, revolved boss and revolved cut.Take Solidworks knowledge to the next level by creating 3D representations of parts and assemblies that interact with one another in a realistic way. Master the skills required to be productive in any design office. This class will prepare attendees for the Certified Solidworks Associate Test. This test is a certification by Solidworks Corp. that proves student proficiency. It can be a valuable addition to any resume.
The Fab Lab is located on the 3rd floor of the Fowler Family Southside Center. The Lab offers resources ranging from metalworking, woodshop, 3D printing, laser cutting, audio engineering, guitar-making, robotics and more. NCC’s Fab Lab instructors are technical experts, business savvy individuals and adjunct faculty who lead courses and events to expand the creative process in projects and ventures that students and community members want to pursue.

All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley Times, Slate Belt Town Topics, The Belt & Beyond, and subsequently publishing his own book. Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. NCC Veteran’s Day Event Featuring Phil Klay
On Saturday, November 11, Veterans Day, Northampton Community College will honor Veterans and service people at a college and community event. Veterans have been an important part of the NCC community since the College opened. This year’s celebration honors NCC’s 50th anniversary. The event will include a retreat ceremony, reception, dinner and lecture by Phil Klay, a United States marine officer who won the National Book Award for fiction in 2014 for Redeployment, a collection of short stories recounting the experiences of soldiers and veterans who served in Iraq.
The Retreat Ceremony that takes place in Veterans Plaza, Tribute Garden on the Bethlehem Campus will begin at 4:45 p.m. The presentation by Phil Klay will occur in Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall on the Bethlehem Campus at 7:30 p.m.

NCC Veteran’s Day Event Featuring Phil Klay
On Saturday, November 11, Veterans Day, Northampton Community College will honor Veterans and service people at a college and community event. Veterans have been an important part of the NCC community since the College opened. This year’s celebration honors NCC’s 50th anniversary. The event will include a retreat ceremony, reception, dinner and lecture by Phil Klay, a United States marine officer who won the National Book Award for fiction in 2014 for Redeployment, a collection of short stories recounting the experiences of soldiers and veterans who served in Iraq.
The Retreat Ceremony that takes place in Veterans Plaza, Tribute Garden on the Bethlehem Campus will begin at 4:45 p.m. The presentation by Phil Klay will occur in Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall on the Bethlehem Campus at 7:30 p.m.

The play is about five young underachievers who spend their days and nights wasting their lives away, hanging out in parking lots and occasionally mentioning that they might want to make something of themselves…someday. On this particular night, they are visited by an old high school friend who has escaped their suburban town to become a pop star.

We need your help to plant shrubs and trees and repair the split rail fence protecting the buffer. Participants should dress for weather and bring work gloves if you have them. National Free Throw Contest
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the Elks National Hoop Shoot to be held beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Washington Elementary School, 381 Washington Blvd, Bangor, PA. This Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13 and is free to all contestants. Registration will be open beginning at noon on December 16, 2017 at the school gymnasium. Beginning at the local level, winning contestants will advance through District, State, Regional, and National competitions. The Elks helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One boy and one girl from each division will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, provides a character-building, competitive experience for all contestants. Contestants learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship. The Bangor Lodge is a proud sponsor of this annual local event. Winners of this local event will represent our Lodge at the District Free throw competition, also being held at Washington Elementary on February 3, 2018. January 27
Irish Tin Whistle Workshop BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs. Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem. Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle. The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E.
