Although it’s very simplistic to say that in life and in sports sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, it is nonetheless, true. It’s also true that winning is not always measured with trophies, medals or newspaper headlines. The seniors on this year’s Slater softball team won a lot in their four years - 84 times, in fact, against only 19 losses. This includes three Colonial League Championships, two back-to-back District XI Championships and three wins in the state AAAA tournament. This team is also one of only three teams in Bangor High School history to reach the state final four in any sport. It’s obvious that over the past four years this Slater softball team has been the most successful in Bangor softball history. The crushing 9-4 loss to Tunkhannock at Wilkes University ended the Slaters’ dream season just one game shy of the state championship game at Penn State. That loss is going to sting for a while, but time has a way of healing all wounds. In the end, this team will not be remembered not for losing the state semi final, but for what they did during their four years. Championships aside, this team would be a joy to coach. They’re focused, disciplined, remarkably well-schooled in the fundamentals of the game, and they maintain a business-like approach whether they are winning or losing. In a photo that we took of a team celebration of Kaitlyn Caleen’s 100th career RBI, we zoomed in on the writing on the back of a Bangor’s coach’s shirt which is very revealing. It reads: “Ability May Get You To The Top But It Takes Character To Keep You There.” Although we as coaches and sports writers tend to use “character” in clichéd remarks - it’s really a huge part of sports and life. Watching this team play over the past four years it’s obvious that they have a lot of character. Much of the credit for that goes to the girls themselves, their parents, head coach Rich Kessler and his staff. It was this character that gave them the “stuff” for all of those amazing come-from-behind wins this post season. Perhaps, most important, it’s that character that will serve them well in life after softball. American Drinking Water May Contain Toxin

Drinking water for 15 million Americans in 27 states is contaminated with a toxic chemical that was used to make nonstick cookware, according to a new report released Thursday. These chemicals, known as PFCs (perfluorochemicals), have been linked to cancer, thyroid disease and weakened immune systems. Even small concentrations in drinking water is considered a threat to public health, according to the report by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group and Northeastern University. "It’s remarkable that the richest country on Earth can’t guarantee its citizens that their drinking water is completely safe and has no long-term health implications," said Bill Walker, managing editor of the EWG in a press release. Because PFCs have waterproof and nonstick properties, they were formerly used in hundreds of consumer products, "including cookware, outdoor clothing, food packaging and firefighting foam," reports the EWG. The EWG and Northeastern University created an interactive map combining data from the EPA and information from all publicly documented cases of PFC pollution coming from manufacturing plants, military airbases, civilian airports and fire training sites. Although there is growing evidence of the health hazards of PFCs, there are currently no federal health regulations for these chemicals in drinking water. It has been 25 years since the EPA has added a new drinking water contaminant to the Safe Drinking Water Act. Bangor Park 2017 Summer Events:

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright re-introduced legislation that would guarantee leave for military families. The bipartisan Military Family Leave Act allows military families to spend time with a loved one who has received notification of impending active duty deployment. Currently, parents, children, and spouses of military personnel are allowed 12 weeks of unpaid leave if a family member is notified of impending active duty in support of a contingency operation. However, it excludes many individuals, such as those who work part time or are employed by a company with fewer than 50 employees. The Military Family Leave Act creates two workweeks of unpaid family leave for immediate family members of active duty service members who are exempted from getting such leave under existing law. “Military members and their families make great sacrifices in the name of our national security,” said Rep. Cartwright. “This legislation closes gaps in current law to provide family support to all service members called to active duty.” Rep. Matt Cartwright represents Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District, which includes Schuylkill County and portions of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, and Northampton Counties. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants. BMCL Nature Adventure The Blue Mt. Community Library will offer a new program this summer for children. The library will partner with Waste Management for NATURE ADVENTURE! Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are encouraged to attend this program for Storytime and outdoor activities and should dress to explore! The 3 programs will be held at 10:00 am at the WM Environmental Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl: June 14 (Pollinators), July 12 (Landfill Trucks and More!) and August 9 (Bluebirds and Tree Swallows). The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE! The program runs June 12 through August 12. Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook. The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 14Congress adopts the Stars and Stripes - 1777 During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” The national flag, which became known as the “Stars and Stripes,” was based on the “Grand Union” flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes. According to legend, Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross designed the new canton for the Stars and Stripes, which consisted of a circle of 13 stars and a blue background, at the request of General George Washington. Historians have been unable to conclusively prove or disprove this legend. With the entrance of new states into the United States after independence, new stripes and stars were added to represent new additions to the Union. In 1818, however, Congress enacted a law stipulating that the 13 original stripes be restored and that only stars be added to represent new states. On June 14, 1877, the first Flag Day observance was held on the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes. As instructed by Congress, the U.S. flag was flown from all public buildings across the country. In the years after the first Flag Day, several states continued to observe the anniversary, and in 1949 Congress officially designated June 14 as Flag Day, a national day of observance. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. Everyone in the Slate Belt knows that the summer weather won't arrival until Faith Church’s Annual Strawberry Festival. Now in its 23th year the Annual Strawberry Festival will finally arrive on Saturday, June 17, 2017 from 4pm to 7pm, rain or shine. Since Faith church has been making the traditional Strawberry pie for 23 years now, you might say, we know a thing or two about strawberry desserts. So to celebrate this year’s Festival the menu will also include those old time favorites like Hot Dogs, Turkey and Beef barbecue, along with a popular selection of salads, and cold drinks. Don't miss this one and taste why this Festival is in its twenty third (23) successful year, maybe it’s because the best Strawberries wind up in our desserts. Visitors coming to the farm for the historic tour will experience guides portraying family members going about a typical day on a homestead in the 1800s. In addition to the tour, folks will have a chance to involve themselves in a variety of garden-related activities. Tour a typical Pennsylvania German kitchen garden, get help with garden basics, sample yummy things made with fresh herbs and vegetables and take home some recipes. At the outdoor brick oven herb breads will be baked and samples shared. This year’s feature area, Outdoor Living Space will have an example of a comfortable gathering place for families looking for some fresh air and relaxation at home, complete with a Zen gravel bed. There will be new adventures at the party including two Food Demonstrations, Dutch Oven Cooking with Fresh Herbs and Easy Herb Cheese Making. Older youth and adults will enjoy making birds using wire and paper as well as quilled flower mobiles. The Children’s Area will have lots of summer craft fun with insect creatures, 3D flower cards and bubble pictures. Visitors are welcome to hang some artwork from the tree featured in the theme area. This is a day full of gardening inspiration, artistic expression and fun in the outdoors. This event is sponsored in part by a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Project Stream grant.
