Group Seeks To Enhance Educational Impact
Hershey, Pennsylvania – Strengthening the impact and success of public schools for our students and educators was the focus for attendees at the Board2Board™ Workshop held October 19, 2017 at the Hershey Lodge. Local education foundations are independent non-profit charitable organizations governed by a volunteer board of directors.
The sole purpose of education foundations is to benefit local public school districts. Over 20 education foundations and related organizations were represented at Board2Board™, including Marc Blau, Charlie Cole and Michael Feeney from the Bangor Area School District Educational Foundation, Inc. According to Laurie Cromwell, CFRE of Foundation Innovation LLC and a Board2Board™ presenter, “Following in the footsteps of public universities and colleges, K12 school districts and their local communities are establishing their own foundations to leverage private dollars and expand opportunities for their teachers and students.” Leah Spangler, CEO of The Learning Lamp & Ignite Education Solutions and researcher of Pennsylvania education foundations added, “There are currently approximately 312 established education foundations in Pennsylvania and the number continues to grow.” Local education foundations focus on enhancing community support and expanding resources to enrich teaching, inspire learning, and maximize opportunities for students and educators. Education foundations provide a vehicle for donors to contribute a tax deductible donation to benefit their local public school districts. Education foundations also create a vehicle for community engagement and awareness that can help support and enhance the image of a school district and highlight its accomplishments. “I learned that the more diligently the foundation members can work with the goals of the school district in mind, the more the community will benefit through student achievement” said Marc Blau, Bangor Area School District Educational Foundation, Inc. This year’s workshop was sponsored by Pennsylvania Public Education Foundation and Pennsylvania School Board Association, and was facilitated by Foundation Innovation, LLC, a professional consulting firm specializing in working with education foundations throughout the nation. On Saturday, November 4th, 2017 Upper Mount Bethel Township will be hosting its first Fall Festival from 1-5 pm at the Chelsea Sun Inn, 487 Stone Church Drive in Mount Bethel. There will be pumpkin picking and painting, a petting zoo, face painting, hay rides, music, a 50/50 raffle and a Tricky Tray. Tickets will be sold at the event for these features as well as refreshments and food! A FREE Touch-a-Truck exhibit sponsored by Upper Mount Bethel Township will be on-site and will include road crew vehicles, local fire trucks and other vehicles. All proceeds from the event will be shared equally between two local non-profits, Nick Russo’s American Way Disaster Relief and Bloom Bangor. American Way Disaster Relief brings essential supplies to victims of natural disaster, specifically those harmed by the recent hurricanes. Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, on Saturday, November 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 3D.C. residents cast first presidential votes - 1964 On this day in 1964, residents of the District of Columbia cast their ballots in a presidential election for the first time. The passage of the 23rd Amendment in 1961 gave citizens of the nation’s capital the right to vote for a commander in chief and vice president. They went on to help Democrat Lyndon Johnson defeat Republican Barry Goldwater in 1964, the next presidential election. Between 1776 and 1800, New York and then Philadelphia served as the temporary center of government for the newly formed United States. The capital’s location was a source of much controversy and debate, especially for Southern politicians, who didn’t want it located too far north. In 1790, Congress passed a law allowing President George Washington to choose the permanent site. As a compromise, he selected a tract of undeveloped swampland on the Potomac River, between Maryland and Virginia, and began to refer to it as Federal City. The commissioners overseeing the development of the new city picked its permanent name—Washington—to honor the president. Congress met for the first time in Washington, D.C., on November 17, 1800. The District was put under the jurisdiction of Congress, which terminated D.C. residents’ voting rights in 1801. In 1961, the 23rd Amendment restored these rights, allowing D.C. voters to choose electors for the Electoral College based on population, with a maximum of as many electors as the least populated state. With a current population of over 550,000 residents, 61-square-mile D.C. has three electoral votes, just like Wyoming, America’s smallest state, population-wise. The majority of D.C.’s residents are African Americans and they have voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates in past presidential elections. The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year. Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies. Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached. 10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! NCC’s Fab Lab Solidworks Certification Prep Northampton Community College’s Fab Lab will have classes for Solidworks Certification Preparation at the Fowler Family Southside Center beginning on November 6 at 6:30 p.m. Learn basic 3D modeling techniques. Sketching on planes and surfaces, sketch relationships (coincident, colinear, tangent, horizontal, vertical, concentric, offset, parallel, etc), and dimensioning. Explore the extruded boss and extruded cut feature, revolved boss and revolved cut.Take Solidworks knowledge to the next level by creating 3D representations of parts and assemblies that interact with one another in a realistic way. Master the skills required to be productive in any design office. This class will prepare attendees for the Certified Solidworks Associate Test. This test is a certification by Solidworks Corp. that proves student proficiency. It can be a valuable addition to any resume. The Fab Lab is located on the 3rd floor of the Fowler Family Southside Center. The Lab offers resources ranging from metalworking, woodshop, 3D printing, laser cutting, audio engineering, guitar-making, robotics and more. NCC’s Fab Lab instructors are technical experts, business savvy individuals and adjunct faculty who lead courses and events to expand the creative process in projects and ventures that students and community members want to pursue. The Bangor Lions Club is a non-profit organization that raises money for sight conservation, diabetes awareness, the hearing impaired, White Cane, Center for Vision Loss, local food banks and leader dog for over 60 years. The Pocono Arts Council will host its annual Holiday Store in The ARTSPACE Gallery located at 18 N. 7th Street in Stroudsburg. National Free Throw Contest
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the Elks National Hoop Shoot to be held beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Washington Elementary School, 381 Washington Blvd, Bangor, PA. This Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13 and is free to all contestants. Registration will be open beginning at noon on December 16, 2017 at the school gymnasium. Beginning at the local level, winning contestants will advance through District, State, Regional, and National competitions. The Elks helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One boy and one girl from each division will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, provides a character-building, competitive experience for all contestants. Contestants learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship. The Bangor Lodge is a proud sponsor of this annual local event. Irish Tin Whistle Workshop BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs. Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem. Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle. The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E.
