Surviving Holiday Houseguests
If you're playing host this holiday season, there is one important thing to remember: Take it all in stride. You will get tired, overwhelmed, and irritated with a bustling home. But there are a few easy ways to help survive the rush of holiday guests. Keep them happy and full with plenty of snacks, spread everyone out, and if all else fails, get yourself out of the house and have some much-needed alone time.
Everyone wants to have the most perfect family holiday, but be sure to keep your dreams realistic. Know that someone will probably drink too much. Someone will almost certainly be rude or passive-aggressive all throughout their stay. Remember that family and friends can be a lot to take on during the holidays, and plan accordingly. Being a good host means that your guests will be incredibly comfortable. Make your guest rooms cozy with freshly laundered sheets, towels for their use, and some entertainment that will make their quarters feel like home. Bonus: If their rooms are particularly relaxing, your guests are more likely to spend time in there, giving you some breathing room. Yes, you should clean and you should try and prepare as many snacks and meals as possible, but something will inevitably fall through the cracks. And that's OK! At the end of the day, your houseguests are there to visit you and spend time with you during the holidays. They're not judging the décor in your bathroom (or they shouldn't be). Especially during the winter when it's cold outside, people may be likely to try and stay in the house. Simply put: That is a bad idea. Spending endless time in the same house with the same people is a quick way for tensions to rise. Be sure to plan an activity away from the home to get everyone out and about. Take in a local tradition, such as a holiday market or Christmas light trail. That way, you can show off your town in addition to diffusing inevitable bickering. In general, it's good to be a flexible person who adapts to the needs and wants of others and goes with the flow when plans happen to change. But the importance of being this way is massively increased when hosting holiday houseguests. Their whims, desires, and needs will change. It's going to be easy to get frustrated by that. However, to be the most gracious host, you should be as accommodating as possible. Weather Related Forecasts

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 22First gorilla born in captivity 1956 On this day in 1956, a baby gorilla named Colo enters the world at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, becoming the first-ever gorilla born in captivity. Weighing in at approximately 4 pounds, Colo, a western lowland gorilla whose name was a combination of Columbus and Ohio, was the daughter of Millie and Mac, two gorillas captured in French Cameroon, Africa, who were brought to the Columbus Zoo in 1951. Before Colo’s birth, gorillas found at zoos were caught in the wild, often by brutal means. In order to capture a gorilla when it was young and therefore still small enough to handle, hunters frequently had to kill the gorilla’s parents and other family members. Gorillas are peaceful, intelligent animals, native to Africa, who live in small groups led by one adult male, known as a silverback. There are three subspecies of gorilla: western lowland, eastern lowland and mountain. The subspecies are similar and the majority of gorillas in captivity are western lowland. Gorillas are vegetarians whose only natural enemy is the humans who hunt them. On average, a gorilla lives to 35 years in the wild and 50 years in captivity. At the time Colo was born, captive gorillas often never learned parenting skills from their own parents in the wild, so the Columbus Zoo built her a nursery and she was reared by zookeepers. In the years since Colo’s arrival, zookeepers have developed habitats that simulate a gorilla’s natural environment and many captive-born gorillas are now raised by their mothers. In situations where this doesn’t work, zoos have created surrogacy programs, in which the infants are briefly cared for by humans and then handed over to other gorillas to raise.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. We will explore the old growth forest of Henrys Woods and wildlife along the Homestead Trail. You may choose from one of two hikes starting at 10:00 AM or 1:00 PM. Meet at the flag pole in front of the visitor center at 400 Belfast Road. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, and wear layers. Registration is required.

The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm

Creative Drama Workshop
On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.

Families First will present their 8th Annual Benefit Snow Ball Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dance will be held at the Weona Park Recreation Center in Pen Argyl. Dinner will be provided by Just in Thyme and the music will be DJ Joe Franzo & Karaoke. There will be basket raffles and door prizes. The event is BYOB. Please dress casual. Tickets are $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door. You can purchase tickets by contacting Spring Shank - Pen Argyl High School, Kate Marsteller – Wind Gap Middle School, or Kelly Thomas – Plainfield Elementary. Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

Other possibilities include the rare Golden Eagle, Common Goldeneyes, Pileated Woodpeckers and many other winter bird species. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
