Scientists hit milestone, print human cartilageCBS News
The story of 3D printing in medical care is quickly moving from abstract hope to concrete progress, as Swedish researchers announced that they have successfully 3D-printed stem cells that multiplied and differentiated into a material very similar to human cartilage tissue. The stem cells survived the printing process, which researchers are celebrating as a breakthrough. The research, a collaboration between scientists from Belgium's Sahlgrenska Academy and Chalmers University of Technology, is published in the latest issue of the journal Scientific Reports. The researchers designed a new process for producing cartilage. They started with cartilage cells taken from real patients who underwent knee surgery. Those cells were manipulated to revert to stem cells, which were then encapsulated in cellulose material and printed using a 3D bioprinter. When they survived the printing process, the stem cells were treated with growth stimulants, which prompted them to multiply and differentiate — transforming into cartilage. "In nature, the differentiation of stem cells into cartilage is a simple process, but it's much more complicated to accomplish in a test tube. We're the first to succeed with it, and we did so without any animal testing whatsoever," lead researcher Stina Simonsson said in a statement. 3D bioprinting is an area of explosive interest in medical resesarch. In 2013, Cornell University scientists used a 3D printer to grow human ears from cow cells, a step towards one day growing custom ears for individuals with ear defects. That same year, Princeton University researchers claimed that some of the 3D printed ears they produced could hear at frequencies that are far out of range for the normal human ear. 3D printing is also making waves in facial reconstructive surgery, burn treatment, and more. The latest research points toward a future in which scientists can generate cartilage based off a patient's own stem cells, and use that cartilage in the patient's body. Researchers say that the cartilage produced in their procedure was so similar to human cartilage that experienced surgeons could not tell the difference. But researchers warned of one roadblock they still need to overcome: the kind of cellulose they used in the printing process might not be well-suited for the human body. They said they hope to explore another material that can be broken down and absorbed by the body, safely leaving only the endogenous cartilage behind. They also noted that this method requires large amounts of live stem cells. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 17Brown v. Board of Ed is decided - 1954 In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin. In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled in Plessy v. Ferguson that “separate but equal” accommodations in railroad cars conformed to the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. That ruling was used to justify segregating all public facilities, including elementary schools. However, in the case of Linda Brown, the white school she attempted to attend was far superior to her black alternative and miles closer to her home. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up Linda’s cause, and in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka reached the Supreme Court. African American lawyer (and future Supreme Court justice) Thurgood Marshall led Brown’s legal team, and on May 17, 1954, the high court handed down its decision. In an opinion written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the nation’s highest court ruled that not only was the “separate but equal” doctrine unconstitutional in Linda’s case, it was unconstitutional in all cases because educational segregation stamped an inherent badge of inferiority on African American students. A year later, after hearing arguments on the implementation of their ruling, the Supreme Court published guidelines requiring public school systems to integrate “with all deliberate speed.” The Brown v. Board of Education decision served to greatly motivate the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and ultimately led to the abolishment of racial segregation in all public facilities and accommodations. In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to [email protected]

The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
