CLICK HERE TO READ THE MONROE DAILY NEWSATTENTION SLATE BELTDear Fellow Slate Belt Residents, Again, we ask our community to pull together. This time it's not to help build a YMCA but to stop the building of a Sludge Treatment Facility next to the Waste Management landfill in Plainfield Township. We urge as many citizens as possible to find all the information given to us through sludgefree.umbt on Facebook, John Reinhart’s January 17th letter in the Express Times, and the facebook Sludge Free Slate Belt flyers. This information will get you up to speed quickly. We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at [email protected] and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us. Contacting individual board members would be helpful. Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great. The future of our families and neighborhoods are at stake. We will be there in opposition with you. Sincerely, Tighe & Neil Scott Quarry Camping......This artist's rendering of a quarry camp is part of the Slate Belt Futures display open to the public at the Slate Belt Heritage Center Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 3:00pm for the next three weeks. The display not only focuses on the future of quarries, but also other aspects of the Slate Belt. The display and study was put together by graduate students from the University of Pennsylvania. Finger caught in door Man runs with train (UPI) -- A commuter who nearly boarded the wrong train in China ended up in an even worse situation when the train started pulling out with his finger caught in the door.
A video recorded Monday at the commuter train station in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, shows a man hurriedly getting off the train after realizing it was the wrong one. The door closes on the man's finger as he is exiting and begins to pull away, causing him to have to run alongside it while trying to free his digit. Other commuters shouted and pounded on the train to try to make it stop. The uploader said the man was able to free his finger before the train left the platform, and he did not sustain any serious injuries. Business...Planning for Your Retirement (BPT) - The idea of retirement may start out as a distant dream. You have hopes and plans for that special time that seems so far away. Sooner or later that time will be here and hopefully you’ll be ready.
However, recent research shows many people are not prepared to enjoy a financially stable retirement. A study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute states: * Only 18 percent of people are very confident they will have the savings they need for a comfortable retirement; * One-third of people aren’t confident they will be able to cover basic living expenses in retirement; * 45 percent of Americans aren’t confident they will be able to cover their medical expenses once they’re retired; * 3 in 10 workers report that preparing for retirement causes them to feel mentally or emotionally stressed. Securing your retirement through financial planning “Many people recognize the value of saving for a comfortable retirement. They just don’t know how to manage their money effectively to maximize their savings and realize their dreams,” says Geoffrey Brown, CEO of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. “To create an actionable strategy for saving, consumers should look for financial planners who are fiduciaries for help. These professionals are entrusted to manage assets or wealth while putting the client’s best interests first at all times.” Financial planners provide support and advice on a wide array of financial topics, including budgeting, estate planning, investments, education funding, insurance and risk management, healthcare planning, and, of course, retirement planning and senior issues. Financial planners who are members of NAPFA are all fee-only and compensated solely through fees from their clients, rather than by transaction-based commissions. Most commissions-based advisors are salespeople rather than comprehensive financial planners. All NAPFA members also sign a fiduciary oath, meaning they must disclose any conflict, or potential conflict, to their clients prior to and throughout the advisory engagement. Working with a fee-only fiduciary means you can be sure the advice you receive from your financial planner is in your best interest, not their best interest. To find the right financial planner for you and your needs, follow these tips from NAPFA: * Finalize your own initial strategy. Before looking for a financial planner, think about the goals you want to attain: What are you saving for? Are you trying to prepare for retirement, save for a new home or put a child through college? Maybe you're saving for all the above. Once you understand your goals, it will be easier to find a planner who can help you reach them. * Select several advisors. Don’t narrow your focus when looking for the right financial planner. Instead, consult websites like NAPFA.org. Use the NAPFA Find an Advisor search platform to locate a financial planner who can help you get where you’re going. Word of mouth is fine for some pursuits, but your financial goals are specific to your life, and probably differ greatly from those of your friends. Once you have a “short list” of possible planners, then you are ready to move on to the next step. * Do your homework. When it comes to vetting a financial planner, a little research goes a long way. Once you’ve collected the names of a couple of planners that appeal to you, learn a little more about them. Visit their company websites or review their LinkedIn profiles to learn more about the company and the planner. You can also search the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission site or BrokerCheck by FINRA to learn more about the planner’s disciplinary history. It’s important to review an advisor’s disciplinary records, their practice focus and their credentials — such as whether or not they are a Certified Financial Planner(TM) (CFP(R)) professional. This work can help you ask the right questions when setting up your first in-person meeting. * Meet them face-to-face. If you like everything you’ve found so far, then it’s time to meet your potential financial planner. Set up a face-to-face meeting and bring questions of your own or use a Financial Planner Diagnostic tool. Pay attention not only to the answers your potential planner gives, but also to your comfort level during the conversation. Your financial planner will have a large role in your future success so it’s important that you feel comfortable with the relationship. * Review your results initially and annually. Once you’ve finished your interviews, take the time to review all the information you’ve gathered and pick the financial planner that best fits your needs. After that, plan to review the performance of your finances every year. Your relationship with your planner is ongoing and a successful partnership is one in which you feel comfortable, your savings grow and you’re left excited and confident about what's in store for your financial future. To learn more about how you can find the right financial planner for you, visit NAPFA.org. Education and Careers...National Poppy Day honors veterans' sacrifice (BPT) - Even in the darkest of times, flowers still find their way to the surface to bloom. Poppy seeds can lay fallow for years, yet bloom brilliantly when the soil is disturbed or when the soil is freshly dug. After the battles were fought in World War I, the blood red poppy flourished in France and Belgium when battlefields became burial grounds. The red flowers suddenly bloomed among the newly dug gravesites of fallen service members, turning the new graveyards into fields of red.
Surviving soldiers came to see the poppy as more than a flower — it became a symbol of their sacrifice; a tribute to the price of freedom. Although all WWI veterans have since passed, 100 years later, the poppy has become a universal display of the sacrifices made by Americans and allied service members around the world. Historically, Americans have worn poppies in observance of Memorial Day and Veterans Day. While other nations honor veterans in their own way, this year, Congress is poised to proclaim the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day in the United States. The inaugural National Poppy Day will be May 26, 2017. National Poppy Day is a strong renewal of our nation’s commitment to a powerful reminder of the cost of our freedom with 100 years of rich tradition. Millions of people worldwide wear the poppy as a call to honor living veterans and those who lost their lives. The custom can be traced back to 1918 when Moina Michael popularized the idea of wearing a poppy flower in memory of the lives lost in WWI. She drew inspiration from the poem In Flanders Fields, written by WWI Colonel John McCrae in his sorrow at looking at rows and rows of graves where his comrades had been recently buried. In the decades that followed, poppies have been worn, displayed and distributed for fundraising efforts for veterans service organizations around the world. To observe National Poppy Day, all citizens are encouraged to wear the poppy to honor those who sacrificed their lives to provide them their freedom from WWI a century ago, to today’s global war on terror. “As an Operation Enduring Freedom veteran, it is heartening to see people wearing the red poppies throughout the year as a tribute to those who have served in our military, especially those who fought and died for our freedom. The poppy was significant to my great grandfather who fought in World War One. It still holds the same meaning today that it did nearly 100 years ago. It’s such a simple thing Americans can do to honor the sacrifices that people in the military make to protect our country,” says active-duty veteran Matthew Geczy. The American Legion Family, the chief advocate of the effort to establish an official Poppy Day, has had a connection to the poppy flower since the early 1920s when it was adopted as their official memorial flower to pay homage to the battlefields of WWI. Since then, they have made it their mission to support the military community by promoting the significance of the flower and the meaning behind it. Each year, members and volunteers connected to the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), one of the nation’s most prominent supporters of veterans’ rights, leverage the poppy in service to the veteran community through Poppy Day distributions and outreach. ALA volunteers hand out red paper or silk paper poppies in exchange for donations that go directly to support veterans. Many of those poppies are made by hospitalized and disabled veterans as a form of rehabilitation and a source of income through this ALA program. In 2016, ALA members throughout the U.S. distributed over 16 million red paper poppies and raised $6 million in donations that went directly to help the veterans who made them. Donning a poppy this National Poppy Day is one simple way to show gratitude for a community that has given their lives to protect ours, but your support does not have to stop there. The ALA values any and all contributions to support our nation’s heroes, and you are also encouraged to wear the poppy year round. On May 26, the inaugural National Poppy Day, watch for volunteers of The American Legion Auxiliary distributing poppies and collecting donations to support our veterans and current service members. Wear a poppy and show them that you respect and honor their sacrifices. Visit www.ALAforVeterans.org to learn more. |

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to [email protected]
