Flood Watch for the Slate Belt
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Flash Flood Watch for portions of northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania, including the following areas, in northern New Jersey, Morris, Sussex, and Warren. In Pennsylvania, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, and Northampton. from Sunday afternoon through late Sunday night. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected develop from south to north Sunday afternoon and continue into Sunday night. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are forecast along and north of Interstate 80. Locally higher amounts of 5 inches or greater are possible if thunderstorms develop and move over the same locations. Heavy rainfall occurring in short period of time would result in rapidly rising water levels along streams and creeks. Poor drainage, which is common this time of year due to Leaf debris, could exacerbate flooding. Localized roadway flooding is possible.

St. John Pet Food Pantry

Five years ago, Clint Heisler, pictured here with some of the pet food, wanted to help all the animals. With the help of his parents, Mark and Carol Heisler, they started the Pet Expo at St. John Lutheran Church, 12 Westbrook Ave., Pen Argyl which is now held annually in the fall. After raising money to help area shelters, they wanted to do more and St. John Pet Food Pantry was started as an outreach of the Annual Pet Expo. They want to supply local families in need with food and treats for their pets. In order to determine who qualifies, they follow the income guidelines of the Salvation Army. The pantry has plenty of food to give, now they need pets to give it to. It is stocked with food and treats for dogs and cats. Qualified applicants who have pets, other than cats and dogs, are given a gift card to Washington Pet. Once approved, clients can receive a two week supply of pet food every other week simply by calling and making an appointment between 1 pm and 6 pm on Wednesday. As stated on the application, “St. John Pet Food Pantry offers temporary assistance to help individuals and families in need to feed their pets and should not be viewed as a permanent source of pet food.” The application also states that anyone breeding, selling or flipping animals will not be served. They provide food for up to four pets per household. St. John Pet Food Pantry is supported through funding from the Annual Pet Expo and donations of food, treats and money. Any individual or organization who would like to donate to the Pet Food Pantry should call Mark, Carol or Clint at 610-863-7261. The Heislers are very appreciative of any donations they receive. They store the food in their home and take what is needed to St. John's every other Wednesday for distribution. If you are in need of pet food and are age 18 or older, you may request an application by calling 610-863-7261 and asking for Mark, Carol or Clint. The event will include a retreat ceremony, reception, dinner and lecture by Phil Klay, a United States marine officer who won the National Book Award for fiction in 2014 for Redeployment, a collection of short stories recounting the experiences of soldiers and veterans who served in Iraq. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 28Gateway Arch completed 1965 On this day in 1965, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch, a spectacular 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel marking the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri. The Gateway Arch, designed by Finnish-born, American-educated architect Eero Saarinen, was erected to commemorate President Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and to celebrate St. Louis’ central role in the rapid westward expansion that followed. As the market and supply point for fur traders and explorers—including the famous Meriwether Lewis and William Clark—the town of St. Louis grew exponentially after the War of 1812, when great numbers of people began to travel by wagon train to seek their fortunes west of the Mississippi River. In 1947-48, Saarinen won a nationwide competition to design a monument honoring the spirit of the western pioneers. In a sad twist of fate, the architect died of a brain tumor in 1961 and did not live to see the construction of his now-famous arch, which began in February 1963. Completed in October 1965, the Gateway Arch cost less than $15 million to build. With foundations sunk 60 feet into the ground, its frame of stressed stainless steel is built to withstand both earthquakes and high winds. An internal tram system takes visitors to the top, where on a clear day they can see up to 30 miles across the winding Mississippi and to the Great Plains to the west. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year. Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila was named the 2015 PA Professor of the Year, the first Latino to ever receive the award. Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres. The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography. The Pocono Arts Council will host its annual Holiday Store in The ARTSPACE Gallery located at 18 N. 7th Street in Stroudsburg. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors. Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM. The PoconoArts staff will manage the store 10AM-4PM, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours handled by volunteers. Fees for participation are:

Mt. Bethel Fire Co. Ladies' Auxillary will hold its 29th Annual Craft Show on Saturday, November 25 from 9 am to 3 pm. Two rooms will be filled with over 100 crafters.
