Bangor - Pen Argyl Football Rivalry History......
Frost Advisory for the Slate Belta frost advisory remains in effect from 2 am to 9 am Friday. Temperatures dropping into the mid and upper 30s. Sensitive plants may be killed by frost . Sands Banquet for 100th Game![]() by Larry Cory
A banquet at the Sands Event Center in Bethlehem will highlight the 100th Anniversary of the Bangor and Pen Argyl rivalry football game in 2019, according to a joint announcement made by Bangor A. D. Bron Holland and Pen Argyl A.D. Tim Egan. at the Captains' Luncheon held today in the lobby of the Craig Paine Performing Arts Center at Bangor Senior High School. The banquet will be televised and sponsored by Service Electric TV. Coordinated health is also "committed as a major sponsor." You can find updates on Twitter @100thSlateBeltGame. Service Electric will also televise the game which will be played Saturday October 26, 2019. The 100th game will also will be the earliest seasonal playing date in the history of the series which began in 1922. If you are wondering why the 100th anniversary is not being held in 2022, the answer is simple. During the 1923 and 1924 seasons the teams played twice. The first game of the season was played on Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day, which was and still is celebrated on November 11. The second game was played on Thanksgiving Day. Another early tradition was a game between the Bangor A.A and Pen Argyl which was held in the afternoon while the high schools played in the morning. The morning time will be incorporated into the 100th game with a 10:30am start planned for Paul Farnan Field in Bangor. Former Bangor Administrator Dick Smith was the speaker at today's luncheon. He spoke about the rich tradition and memorable events in the series' history. In referencing a book about Bangor Football history authored by the writer of this story, Smith talked about the twists and turns of the Bangor-Pen Argyl game. One anecdote demonstrated the public perspective of the game when a local newspaper headline to read: "Pen Argyl Gridder Weds Bangor Girl." On another occasion two Bangor players were reportedly offered $100 to throw the game. Although nothing as noteworthy has yet to happen this year, except for the fact that this will be the first time Pen Argyl has played at Bangor on a Saturday afternoon since 1999. That year the game started on a Friday night but was suspended because a power failure turned off the lights, forcing the game to resume the following afternoon. There is no need to worry about that scenario repeating itself, since this year's game is set for 1:30pm Saturday at Paul Farnan Field. Bangor Going to District Finals.....![]() Bangor's Julia Kiss (18) scores her third goal of the game leading the Slaters to a 4-1 win over Salisbury in a District XI semi final held at Nazareth Wednesday. Bangor (16-4) will play Southern Lehigh Wednesday, November 1 for the District XI title at a site and time TBA. The Bangor's win avenged an a recent 1-0 overtime loss to the Falcons on the Slaters' senior day. PHOTO GALLERY Sbtt Photo Larry Cory.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 26Shootout at the OK Corral 1881 On this day in 1881, the Earp brothers face off against the Clanton-McLaury gang in a legendary shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. After silver was discovered nearby in 1877, Tombstone quickly grew into one of the richest mining towns in the Southwest. Wyatt Earp, a former Kansas police officer working as a bank security guard, and his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, the town marshal, represented “law and order” in Tombstone, though they also had reputations as being power-hungry and ruthless. The Clantons and McLaurys were cowboys who lived on a ranch outside of town and sidelined as cattle rustlers, thieves and murderers. In October 1881, the struggle between these two groups for control of Tombstone and Cochise County ended in a blaze of gunfire at the OK Corral. On the morning of October 25, Ike Clanton and Tom McLaury came into Tombstone for supplies. Over the next 24 hours, the two men had several violent run-ins with the Earps and their friend Doc Holliday. Around 1:30 p.m. on October 26, Ike’s brother Billy rode into town to join them, along with Frank McLaury and Billy Claiborne. The first person they met in the local saloon was Holliday, who was delighted to inform them that their brothers had both been pistol-whipped by the Earps. Frank and Billy immediately left the saloon, vowing revenge. . In Case You Missed It......
