Free Community Movie Night in Portland
A free movie will be shown on May 27 beginning at approximately 8:15 pm outside at the Park and Walk in Downtown Portland. In case of rain, it will be shown at 100 Division Street. Here's a movie hint: "His father told him it was impossible, dangerous even. But the boy found one that could fly, spit fire and was friendly. So he built a custom harness and he and his toothless friend played, flew and fought off danger."
Please bring your own blankets and/or chairs. The movie is open to all ages, however, children under age 18 need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the movie. You may bring your own snacks or there will be movie munchies for sale starting at 7:45. Please NO pets. Star Wars opens - 1977
On this day in 1977, Memorial Day weekend opens with an intergalactic bang as the first of George Lucas’ blockbuster Star Wars movies hits American theaters.
The incredible success of Star Wars–it received seven Oscars, and earned $461 million in U.S. ticket sales and a gross of close to $800 million worldwide–began with an extensive, coordinated marketing push by Lucas and his studio, 20th Century Fox, months before the movie’s release date. “It wasn’t like a movie opening,” actress Carrie Fisher, who played rebel leader Princess Leia, later told Time magazine. “It was like an earthquake.” Beginning with–in Fisher’s words–“a new order of geeks, enthusiastic young people with sleeping bags,” the anticipation of a revolutionary movie-watching experience spread like wildfire, causing long lines in front of movie theaters across the country and around the world.
With its groundbreaking special effects, Star Wars leaped off screens and immersed audiences in “a galaxy far, far away.” By now everyone knows the story, which followed the baby-faced Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as he enlisted a team of allies–including hunky Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and the robots C3PO and R2D2–on his mission to rescue the kidnapped Princess Leia from an Evil Empire governed by Darth Vader. The film made all three of its lead actors overnight stars, turning Fisher into an object of adoration for millions of young male fans and launching Ford’s now-legendary career as an action-hero heartthrob.

Over the years it has spawned five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry’s worth of comic books, toys, video games and other products. Two big-screen sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Return of the Jedi (1983), featured much of the original cast and enjoyed the same success–both critical and commercial–as the first film. In 1999, Lucas stretched back in time for the fourth installment, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, chronologically a prequel to the original movie. Two other prequels, Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005) followed.

The 2017 Bangor Borough Town Wide Yard Sale will be held on Friday, May 26th through Monday, May 29th. The yard sale permit fee is waived for these four days for those interested in holding your own sale. The following perm,it guidelines still apply:

Florida man cited for driving with SUV's hood blocking view
(UPI) -- A traveler on a Florida highway captured video of a driver traveling at a high speed in an SUV with the windshield blocked by the vehicle's hood.
Rocky Walsh posted a video to YouTube showing the scene he witnessed when he was a passenger on Highway 50 in Clermont Thursday. "I saw him looking like an old lady, hovered up there, just looking through a small slit in the hood trying to make his way down Highway 50 for well over a mile, I saw him, when the police were after him," Walsh told WKMG-TV. Walsh's video shows police officers attempting to get the driver's attention to make him pull over to the side of the highway. Police said the driver told them his hood wouldn't close after a recent crash, so he has been driving around by looking through the gap at the top of the hood. Clermont police said officers helped the man secure his hood and he was issued a citation for driving with an obstructed view. Walsh said the incident was a good teaching moment for his 15-year-old daughter, who was behind the wheel while he filmed. "I was shocked and I told her earlier, 'you have to be prepared on the road, you never know what you'll see,' but I never thought that would be what we were seeing," Walsh said. He said he hopes other young drivers learn a lesson or two from his video. "I hope people learn some driver safety and you never know what you'll see and to just be prepared and if you have a problem with your car you should pull off to the side," Walsh said. The benefits of travel have been written about for centuries, connecting the experience with cultivating awareness and expanding perspectives. The story of travel connotes a journey of self-discovery. The introduction of every new culture is the beginning of a new mindset. For many, travel is at once a decentering and unifying experience. The encounter of something new leads to being fully present, evaluating preconceptions and rewiring beliefs. The effects of travel on adults is well documented. But how does travel affect children, who rely so much on stability and who, in many ways, already live in the moment, and experience the world with eyes wide open? Does the disruption of place hinder or complement a child’s intellectual development? It’s been eight years since the U.S. Department of Education took a closer look at the effects of travel on childhood education. In a 2009 study, which analyzed findings from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of the Kindergarten Class database, family life was assessed, as were summer activities and school experiences. The study collected data from 21,600 children from grades K-5; a subset of 5,047 parents also were asked about their family excursions during the summer. Study results showed improved standardized test scores in reading, math and general knowledge from the children who traveled during the summer with their families. The study findings are important because they provide an alternative to learning loss in kids during the long summer months away from school. Kids who don’t engage in activities during the summer are at risk of falling more than four months behind their peers. This statistic goes all the way up the ladder to college students. Today, many parents consider the arc of the travel experience — seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, attending concerts and visiting historic sites, monuments and art museums — as an opportunity to not only enhance the emotional depth and patience of their children, but their academic outcomes as well. As a result, some parents are opting to “world school” their children during the summer, with noted benefits of bonding and spending quality time with family, building an interest and respect for other cultures, and making learning interesting and deeply engaging. Can we simply conclude that vacations make kids smarter? We reached out to travel expert Jim Menge for the answer. Menge has been to more than 100 countries, and is a believer of the benefits of travel. Menge is also the President of Rovia, an industry-leading travel and lifestyle service provider, headquartered in Plano, Texas. “Not necessarily,” Menge says. “But the immersive experience of travel and all the delight and disruption that go along with it can have a real effect on childhood learning. And when kids start early, they broaden their horizons, and develop a real appreciation for the world they live in.” If summer travel can have such a profound influence over the intellectual development of kids in grades K-5, what effect, if any, does it have on college students? In the year 2000, the University System of Georgia, comprising 35 institutions, conducted a 10-year study to see if study abroad contributed to the academic performance of college students. They found the experience not only resulted in improved academic performance, higher GPAs and graduation rates, but it benefited the performance of at-risk students as well. Clearly, travel and education can create powerful combinations. If you have children, consider taking a vacation over school breaks and during summer months. It will add to their development and character. And if you have kids in college, study abroad has become an even more compelling option. The shared experience of travel can bring families together, creating bonds and lifelong memories. The plans show many parts of the Slate Belt and consider safe and innovative uses for familiar places. The sites include quarries, flood plains, fens, railroad beds, and other areas in Slate Belt municipalities.

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. Our guest speaker will be Congressman Matt Cartwright PA 17th Representative. We will also be recognizing Slate Belt High School seniors who will be joining the service after graduation.
Each year the Bangor VFW, American Legion and Elks work together to organize Memorial Day and Veterans Day Activities.

The year 2017 is the 70th Anniversary of continuous Memorial Day services in West Bangor. The Program will include the recognition of seven living World War II Veterans whose names are listed on the Memorial Plaque in West Bangor.
The principal speaker will be Colonel Terry J. Young. Colonel Young is a native of Pen Argyl, a graduate of Pen Argyl High School, and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also has a Masters degree in Educational Psychology and a Masters Equivalent in Strategic Studies.
The Roper Quartet will render musical selections. Tanner Barr and Gianna Greggo, both students at Pen Argyl High School, will give recitations of “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” Walter Cole and Kyle Schmidt will play “Taps” in honor of deceased service men and women. The Rev. Msgr. Vincent P. York, pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Pen Argyl will offer the Invocation and Benediction.
In case of inclement weather, services will be held at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church Social Hall, Verona Drive, West Bangor. The public is invited to attend.

In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church 404 E. Mountain Avenue, Pen Argyl.

The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit.
As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife.
Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
