Awarded GrantToday, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded the Upper Nazareth Fire Department and Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company with Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG). The funds will be distributed via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company and Upper Nazareth Fire Department will use AFG funds to purchase Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units. Each unit will include: Harness/backpack, face piece, and two cylinders. This type of equipment is worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable air in an immediately dangerous-to-life or health atmosphere. The grant funds will be distributed as follows:Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company $136,191 and Upper Nazareth Fire Department $102,858 “The condition of most of their current SCBA unit’s warrant immediate replacement,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. “I am glad that Upper Nazareth and Plainfield Township are able to replace the obsolete and damaged SCBA units, I strongly support this federal program which helps to ensure the safety of our first responders and communities.” The purpose of the AFG is to award competitive grants directly to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel. Since 2001, the AFG program has provided approximately $6.7 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training. During the current funding cycle, the AFG program will award another $310.5 million to first-responder organizations that need support to improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types. Rep. Matt Cartwright represents Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District, which includes Schuylkill County and portions of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, and Northampton Counties. Cartwright serves on the House Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. CHIP Extension to Help More PA Kids
To help ensure children can access health care coverage, the House recently passed legislation to continue the Pennsylvania Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which is set to expire on Dec. 31. CHIP provides insurance coverage to uninsured children and teens (up to age 19) whose families earn too much to qualify for Medical Assistance, but who cannot afford to purchase private insurance. CHIP is supported by both state and federal funds and provides payment for health care coverage for eligible children who meet income and other criteria. House Bill 1388 received unanimous support in the House and now goes to the Senate for consideration. More than 174,000 children are currently enrolled in CHIP. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 25Korean War begins - 1950 Armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The United States, acting under the auspices of the United Nations, quickly sprang to the defense of South Korea and fought a bloody and frustrating war for the next three years. Korea, a former Japanese possession, had been divided into zones of occupation following World War II. U.S. forces accepted the surrender of Japanese forces in southern Korea, while Soviet forces did the same in northern Korea. Like in Germany, however, the “temporary” division soon became permanent. The Soviets assisted in the establishment of a communist regime in North Korea, while the United States became the main source of financial and military support for South Korea. On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces surprised the South Korean army (and the small U.S. force stationed in the country), and quickly headed toward the capital city of Seoul. The United States responded by pushing a resolution through the U.N.’s Security Council calling for military assistance to South Korea. (Russia was not present to veto the action as it was boycotting the Security Council at the time.) With this resolution in hand, President Harry S. Truman rapidly dispatched U.S. land, air, and sea forces to Korea to engage in what he termed a “police action.” The American intervention turned the tide, and U.S. and South Korean forces marched into North Korea. This action, however, prompted the massive intervention of communist Chinese forces in late 1950. The war in Korea subsequently bogged down into a bloody stalemate. In 1953, the United States and North Korea signed a cease-fire that ended the conflict. The cease-fire agreement also resulted in the continued division of North and South Korea at just about the same geographical point as before the conflict. Bangor Elks Lodge #1106 Golf Tournament

1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers. Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war. As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed. Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615 Resorts Casino Trip
