Elks Makes Christmas Better for Area Families
Over the last two weekends, members of Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks have been busy helping to make Christmas a little easier for over 60 Slate Belt families. On Saturday December 16, the lodge held its annual Christmas Party for children and families of the Slate Belt. A complete luncheon was served to over 80 people and Santa made a visit to the lodge to distribute presents to the children. Each family present also received a large bag of food and household goods to take home and use during the holiday season. Lodge Secretary and organizer Laura McLain along with Elks Lodge volunteers purchased the food and presents and cooked and served the meal for the families. The annual event is funded by the members of Bangor Lodge and the Elks National Foundation. On December 23, the lodge also distributed 40 food baskets to area families. Each basket contained a complete Christmas Dinner including turkey, potatoes, vegetables, bread, milk, eggs, and more. Organizer Past Exalted Ruler Todd McLain gathered Elks in force to purchase, assemble, and distribute the food baskets. In his remarks to members, McLain said of the Bangor Elks “This is what we do” referencing the Bangor Lodge’s continued commitment to it’s community and the less fortunate. All donations for this event, were made by lodge members and the Elks National Foundation. Exalted Ruler John Neetz states proudly that “the members of Bangor Lodge have been serving the communities of the Slate Belt for many years and will continue to do so. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks encourages all of the over 1900 lodges to contribute to their communities and Bangor Lodge is no exception. Throughout the year the Bangor Lodge assists with it’s Drug Awareness Program, the annual Halloween parade, a summer backpack food program, and veterans programs. Theye are happy and proud to also be able to assist and to have these events for the less than fortunate of the Slate Belt.” Human heart tissue grown from spinach leaves
Could Be Used to Treat Heart Attack Victims Livescience.com In the year's best news for Popeye, it seems the sailor man's favorite vegetable could one day help replace his actual heart after one too many bouts with Bluto. In several experiments, scientists grew beating human heart cells on spinach leaves by perfusing the leaves with a detergent solution that stripped away their plant cells. The proof-of-concept study suggested that one day spinach leaves could be used to grow layers healthy heart muscle to help treat heart attack patients, the researchers said. What makes spinach leaves such a good scaffold for growing cells? Researchers say it's the cellulose structure that remains behind after the plant cells have been stripped away. "Cellulose is biocompatible [and] has been used in a wide variety of regenerative medicine applications, such as cartilage tissue engineering, bone tissue engineering and wound healing," the researchers wrote in the study. The team even thinks they could deliver blood and oxygen to developing tissues by pouring liquid through the spinach leaves' veins. Keep your eyes (or, in Popeye's case, eye) on this developing research. The Pen Argyl High School chorus participated in senior citizens day at Pen Argyl High School Friday. Farmers across Pennsylvania are encouraged to take part in the 2017 Census of Agriculture being conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The census seeks to count anyone who earns at least $1,000 per year growing food or other crops. The data is used to develop food and agriculture policies and programs for the entire country, including funding decisions. Census questionnaires are being mailed to farmers, ranchers and growers this month. The 2017 census form, which requires an estimated 50 minutes to complete, must be returned by Feb. 5, 2018, but respondents are encouraged to respond online at www.agcensus.usda.gov. The web-based questionnaire allows access from any electronic device, and farmers can return their draft responses as their schedules allow. The new online form saves time and improves convenience for respondents, while capturing a more detailed account of U.S. farming and ranching. With Pennsylvania a leader in the agriculture industry, it is important our farmers and producers stand up and be counted. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 27Radio City Music Hall opens 1932 At the height of the Great Depression, thousands turn out for the opening of Radio City Music Hall, a magnificent Art Deco theater in New York City. Radio City Music Hall was designed as a palace for the people, a place of beauty where ordinary people could see high-quality entertainment. Since its 1932 opening, more than 300 million people have gone to Radio City to enjoy movies, stage shows, concerts, and special events. Radio City Music Hall was the brainchild of the billionaire John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who decided to make the theater the cornerstone of the Rockefeller Complex he was building in a formerly derelict neighborhood in midtown Manhattan. The theater was built in partnership with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and designed by Donald Deskey. The result was an Art Deco masterpiece of elegance and grace constructed out of a diverse variety of materials, including aluminum, gold foil, marble, permatex, glass, and cork. Geometric ornamentation is found throughout the theater, as is Deskey’s central theme of the “Progress of Man.” The famous Great Stage, measuring 60 feet wide and 100 feet long, resembles a setting sun. Its sophisticated system of hydraulic-powered elevators allowed spectacular effects in staging, and many of its original mechanisms are still in use today. In its first four decades, Radio City Music Hall alternated as a first-run movie theater and a site for gala stage shows. More than 700 films have premiered at Radio City Music Hall since 1933. In the late 1970s, the theater changed its format and began staging concerts by popular music artists. The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, which debuted in 1933, draws more than a million people annually. The show features the high-kicking Rockettes, a precision dance troupe that has been a staple at Radio City since the 1930s. Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness
