Bride/Groom Born Same Hospital, Same Day

Twenty-seven years ago, two Massachusetts babies were born on the same day at the same hospital. Now, the pair is getting married. "If somebody out on the streets were to tell me our story, I would be like, ‘I don’t believe you,’” groom Aaron Bairos of Taunton joked in an interview with InsideEdition.com. Bairos and his bride, Jessica Gomes, were married last month. On April 28, 1990, Bairos and Gomes were the only two babies born at Morton Hospital. “The hospital we were born at was a fairly small hospital, and it’s kind of the only one in the city so the chances of us being born there were pretty [good],” Bairos said. “Both our mothers remember seeing each other.” Gomes said there might be a photo of them together from the hospital shortly after birth, but the background was blurry and it’s difficult to tell whether it is Bairos in the basket behind her. Although their community is small, Gomes said they met formally in high school through friends and started dating as teenagers. “Because we’ve all kind of grown up together, every year for our birthday we do something big,” Bairos said. When asked whether they believed being born at the same time was fate, Gomes answered, “I think it is.” National Friends of the Library Week
October 15th -21st, 2017 October 15th thru the 21st will be “National Friends of the Library Week”. Locally, the Friends of the Bangor Public Library, are a vibrant and industrious group of volunteers. As a means of garnering funds for the library the Friends conduct the following events each year: two “Used Books Sales” one at the Bee Hive the first week in May and at the Blue Valley Farm Show, two “Brunch with the Authors” featuring local literary artists, The Annual Downtown “Duck Race”, “Breakfast with Santa” the first Saturday in December, a Fall “Bake Sale”, and “Wine Tasting” event in November. The Friends also produce a Newsletter four times a year. 100% of the proceeds they raise are given to the Bangor library for operating expenses. This year, the Friends, are also initiating a major project to upgrade the children’s reading section. The Friends meet the 4th Thursday @ 7:00 PM and invite anyone who is interested in joining to attend. Associate members are also accepted to help with the fund raising projects. Medicare Open Enrollment The Medicare Open Enrollment period starts this Sunday, Oct. 15, and runs until Saturday, Dec. 2. This Tuesday, Oct. 17, a representative from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging will be in Representative Marcia Hahn's from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer your Medicare questions. The office is located at 196 West Moorestown Road, Wind Gap. If next week doesn't fit your schedule, the representative will be in the office every Tuesday during open enrollment from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Silent Auction at Blue Mt. Library The Blue Mt. Community Library will be hosting a Silent Auction beginning Monday, October 16 through Saturday, November 18. Various items will be displayed in the Adult Reference Room Area, located on the first floor. Sheets for each item will be attached. Library patrons must place their “Bid” on the sheet, using their membership number. If you are not a member, the volunteer at the desk will assign you one. The winners of the bids for the items will be contacted by phone. These items will make wonderful Christmas gifts. Please consider supporting the library with this fundraiser. The Blue Mt. Family Night: Owl Power Friday, November 17, 6:30-8:00 PM Owls are well known for their charismatic faces and eerie night time calls. How much do you really know about their amazing powers though? Bring your family along for a craft activity and screening of the PBS Nature Series film Owl Power. The film follows the lives of two Barn Owl chicks and will help us understand the adaptations that make owls the successful hunters that they are! Meet the Author Featuring Joe DeFranco The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will hold their Fall “Meet the Author” on Saturday, November 11, 2017 @ 10:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 404 Broadway, Bangor. Pa. Featured author will be local businessman Joe DeFranco. Mr. DeFranco will present his book: Growing Up in the Butcher Shop. Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him. All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley Times, Slate Belt Town Topics, The Belt & Beyond, and subsequently publishing his own book. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 15Mata Hari executed 1917 Mata Hari, the archetype of the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris. She first came to Paris in 1905 and found fame as a performer of exotic Asian-inspired dances. She soon began touring all over Europe, telling the story of how she was born in a sacred Indian temple and taught ancient dances by a priestess who gave her the name Mata Hari, meaning “eye of the day” in Malay. In reality, Mata Hari was born in a small town in northern Holland in 1876, and her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. She acquired her superficial knowledge of Indian and Javanese dances when she lived for several years in Malaysia with her former husband, who was a Scot in the Dutch colonial army. Regardless of her authenticity, she packed dance halls and opera houses from Russia to France, mostly because her show consisted of her slowly stripping nude. She became a famous courtesan, and with the outbreak of World War I her catalog of lovers began to include high-ranking military officers of various nationalities. In February 1917, French authorities arrested her for espionage and imprisoned her at St. Lazare Prison in Paris. In a military trial conducted in July, she was accused of revealing details of the Allies’ new weapon, the tank, resulting in the deaths of thousands of soldiers. Talking Peace, a Peace and Justice Conference, is set for October 19 at Northampton Community College. It is the eighth annual Peace and Justice Conference to take place at the College and will focus on 50 years of peace and justice activism in the United States. Events and displays will encourage empathy across cultures and appreciation of the roots of today’s activism from 50 years ago to coincide with NCC’s 50th anniversary. The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) has announced an Ogham Art Class on November 1, 2017, at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St, Bethlehem PA 18015. Members of the audience will enjoy a fun night of learning about Ogham alphabet, which was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and read from bottom to top. Dr. Javier Ávila, author, poet, and professor of English at Northampton Community College, will present his acclaimed one man show, The Trouble with My Name, on Thursday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center. Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila was named the 2015 PA Professor of the Year, the first Latino to ever receive the award. Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres. The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography. Ávila, a renowned poet and novelist, achieved international recognition when his bestselling novel "Different" became an award-winning motion picture, "Miente," which was screened in over a dozen countries. Family Night: Owl Power Friday, November 17, 6:30-8:00 PM Owls are well known for their charismatic faces and eerie night time calls. How much do you really know about their amazing powers though? Bring your family along for a craft activity and screening of the PBS Nature Series film Owl Power. The film follows the lives of two Barn Owl chicks and will help us understand the adaptations that make owls the successful hunters that they are! Volunteer Day
Saturday, November 18, 10:00 AM-3:00 PM We hope you can join us for our last and biggest volunteer day of the season! We will be working on our riparian buffer restoration project in Henrys Woods! We need your help to plant shrubs and trees and repair the split rail fence protecting the buffer. Participants should dress for weather and bring work gloves if you have them. The Pocono Arts Council will host its annual Holiday Store in The ARTSPACE Gallery located at 18 N. 7th Street in Stroudsburg. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors. Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM. The PoconoArts staff will manage the store 10AM-4PM, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours handled by volunteers. Fees for participation are:
