Live Christmas Tree Shortage If you buy a natural Christmas tree every year, make sure to bring some extra cash when you shop. People reports that the National Christmas Tree Association says there is a shortage of trees this year, and that might raise the cost for your Christmas tradition.
Apparently, the recession from the 2000s caused farmers to plant fewer trees to save money, or go out of business entirely. And because Christmas trees can take around 10 years to grow to their full heights, we're only now seeing the results of the economic downturn. "I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to give you your entire order this year so you might start looking around,'" John Patton of Patton Christmas Trees told CBS Miami. "All the growers are saying, 'man, we're shorter than usual.'" Because there are fewer trees, there may be higher prices when you pick out your tree this holiday season. Doug Hundley from the National Christmas Tree Association told News 12 Long Island that prices could increase between 10-15% in some locations. Prices might also go up because gas prices are higher this year, so it's pricier to transport trees across the country. If you're looking for a deal, experts recommend you look for a tree closer to the holiday - you might have a smaller selection, but suppliers might cut prices to get rid of their inventory. "We believe everyone who wants to have a real tree will find one," Hundley told USA Today. "They may not have the size they want or they might have to buy a different kind (because) we have a tight market." Winter Fest at Dansbury Depot
Dec. 9 1-5:30 PM Tree lighting at 5:30 PM The Annual Winter Fest and Tree Lighting at The Historic Dansbury Depot in East Stroudsburg is a wonderful event where young and old will find a variety of activities to help celebrate this special season. The tree lighting will take place at 5:30 PM. Activities begin at 1. A Santa Train will run at 12 and 2. A dinner will be served on the 4 o’clock train. The event will be filled with music, refreshments, craft making, and horse and carriage rides. Pony rides will be available weather permitting. Kidz Krafts, a silent auction, and a model train display will be inside the depot. Great Christmas gifts will be available for sale at the vendor booths. One may want to visit the restored depot and see first-hand the prized treasure that has been restored to its former glory. Also on site, is the only remaining wooden Railroad Switch Tower on the Delaware Lackawanna line. Visit the tower to observe how the switches were used to control movement of the trains in the area. At5:00, singing and music will lead up to the tree lighting that will occur at 5:30. Come and join the festivities but think about less fortunate people, too. .A collection of canned and dry foods will be collected for the Salvation Army at the depot during the month of December. Items may be brought to the festival or delivered to the depot from 9AM to Noon on week days. Hidden Money Public Hearing This past summer, Rep. Joe Emick joined a group of rank-and-file state legislators to uncover more than $3 billion in special fund accounts and fund balances they hoped to use to support the state budget as an alternative to tax increases. They’ve also discovered transfers of money in May that involved attempts to hide revenue from legislators and the public. The money became part of a budget bill that passed the House but not the Senate. The Representatives were promised future hearings on these controversial sources of revenue, and the House Appropriations Committee is prepared to investigate our claims. This Thursday, Dec. 7, the committee will conduct a public hearing on the special funds related to the Department of Transportation. You can watch that hearing on Rep. Emrick's website, www.RepEmrick.com, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Subsequent hearings are scheduled for the following week. Calling All Veterans Pennsylvania is making a slight change to our monthly veterans outreach service. Jeff Saunders is leaving his role as our American Legion service department officer. Dominick Nati, an Army Air Corp pilot who flew missions out of Fort Indiantown Gap, will be assuming his duties. Veterans outreach takes place the first Monday of every month, as we offer the men and women who serve or have served our country the opportunity to have their individual questions answered. Our next outreach event will be Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, as the first Monday in January is Jan. 1. December 4 Regular EventsMonday December 4

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 4Hostage Terry Anderson freed in Lebanon - 1991 On this day in 1991, Islamic militants in Lebanon release kidnapped American journalist Terry Anderson after 2,454 days in captivity. As chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, Anderson covered the long-running civil war in Lebanon (1975-1990). On March 16, 1985, he was kidnapped on a west Beirut street while leaving a tennis court. His captors took him to the southern suburbs of the city, where he was held prisoner in an underground dungeon for the next six-and-a-half years. Anderson was one of 92 foreigners (including 17 Americans) abducted during Lebanon’s bitter civil war. The kidnappings were linked to Hezbollah, or the Party of God, a militant Shiite Muslim organization formed in 1982 in reaction to Israel’s military presence in Lebanon. They seized several Americans, including Anderson, soon after Kuwaiti courts jailed 17 Shiites found guilty of bombing the American and French embassies there in 1983. Hezbollah in Lebanon received financial and spiritual support from Iran, where prominent leaders praised the bombers and kidnappers for performing their duty to Islam.
