County Leads State in Type B Flu Cases![]() by Larry Cory
As one would expect, cases of the flu are already increasing this year. Northampton County, however, ranks third among 67 counties in the state with 73 confirmed cases of the flu according to data supplied by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Most counties report Type A flu as the most common by a wide margin, however, Northampton is different since it has the largest number (37) of Type B flu cases in the state. Although this fact would appear to be worrisome, local residents can take comfort in the fact that Type B is usually less severe than Type A. Monroe County, just a short distance from the Slate Belt, has only nine cases of the flu thus far this year. Berks County is the state leader with 184 cases and Delaware County near Philadelphia has 83. These numbers show that the highest incidence of the flu in Pennsylvania is occurring in the southeastern part of the state. In the past seven years, the 2011-2012 season had the fewest flu cases. Right now, the number of state flu cases is running on a pace above 2011-2012, however it’s too early to tell where we’re headed this year. Last year was the second highest in the past seven years, while season 2014-2015 had the most. Nationwide, the state is listed with many other states experiencing “local” outbreaks, which is less serious than others classified as regional or widespread. Only Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Georgia rank as the states with the most flu cases. Jacobsburg EEC Open House Today
Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center is hosting its annual holiday open house at the Visitor Center today from noon to 4pm featuring crafts, games, and refreshments. Bring your family along to enjoy the holiday festivities! Our theme this year is “A Holiday Meal.” Learn about animal food choices and easy ways to help wildlife during the cold winter months. There will be a variety of free activities to enjoy including crafts, story reading, a snow play area, and educational games. Show your support for conservation education! Our partners at the Northampton County Junior Conservation School will be helping to run the event and selling refreshments to benefit the weeklong summer conservation school for teens. It’s a great opportunity to grab some lunch and learn about what their summer camp experience has to offer. You can also take part in a natural history walk along the Homestead Trail at 1:00 PM with one of our educators. The walk will lead you to the Boulton Historic District where the Jacobsburg Historical Society will be hosting “Christmas at Boulton” for a $10.00 fee for those ages 13+. You can take part in these additional festivities before walking back to the visitor center at 3:00 PM with a local historian who will highlight the cultural history along the Henrys Woods Trail. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 9
U.S Marines storm Mogadishu, Somalia 1992
On this day in 1992, 1,800 United States Marines arrive in Mogadishu, Somalia, to spearhead a multinational force aimed at restoring order in the conflict-ridden country.
Following centuries of colonial rule by countries including Portugal, Britain and Italy, Mogadishu became the capital of an independent Somalia in 1960. Less than 10 years later, a military group led by Major General Muhammad Siad Barre seized power and declared Somalia a socialist state. A drought in the mid-1970s combined with an unsuccessful rebellion by ethnic Somalis in a neighboring province of Ethiopia to deprive many of food and shelter. By 1981, close to 2 million of the country’s inhabitants were homeless. Though a peace accord was signed with Ethiopia in 1988, fighting increased between rival clans within Somalia, and in January 1991 Barre was forced to flee the capital. Over the next 23 months, Somalia’s civil war killed some 50,000 people; another 300,000 died of starvation as United Nations peacekeeping forces struggled in vain to restore order and provide relief amid the chaos of war.
In early December 1992, outgoing U.S. President George H.W. Bush sent the contingent of Marines to Mogadishu as part of a mission dubbed Operation Restore Hope. Backed by the U.S. troops, international aid workers were soon able to restore food distribution and other humanitarian aid operations. Sporadic violence continued, including the murder of 24 U.N. soldiers from Pakistan in 1993. As a result, the U.N. authorized the arrest of General Mohammed Farah Aidid, leader of one of the rebel clans. On October 3, 1993, during an attempt to make the arrest, rebels shot down two of the U.S. Army’s Black Hawk helicopters and killed 18 American soldiers.
