U.N. votes for partition of Palestine 1947
Despite strong Arab opposition, the United Nations votes for the partition of Palestine and the creation of an independent Jewish state.
The modern conflict between Jews and Arabs in Palestine dates back to the 1910s, when both groups laid claim to the British-controlled territory. The Jews were Zionists, recent emigrants from Europe and Russia who came to the ancient homeland of the Jews to establish a Jewish national state. The native Palestinian Arabs sought to stem Jewish immigration and set up a secular Palestinian state.
Beginning in 1929, Arabs and Jews openly fought in Palestine, and Britain attempted to limit Jewish immigration as a means of appeasing the Arabs. As a result of the Holocaust in Europe, many Jews illegally entered Palestine during World War II. Radical Jewish groups employed terrorism against British forces in Palestine, which they thought had betrayed the Zionist cause. At the end of World War II, in 1945, the United States took up the Zionist cause. Britain, unable to find a practical solution, referred the problem to the United Nations, which on November 29, 1947, voted to partition Palestine.

Book review:
Small Great Things
book by Jodi Picoult
review by Lisa Farnan
This timely novel is about racism, justice, and humanity. The main character is Ruth Jefferson, an African-American, labor & delivery nurse of 20+ years, widowed, single mother of one son.
After performing a checkup on a newborn, she is notified by her supervisor that she has been removed from the baby boy’s care. The reason: his parents are white supremacists. A short time later, the baby experiences a medical issue while Ruth is in the room - alone. Faced with a life or death decision, she performs CPR, too late to save the baby. Ruth is immediately released from her duties at the hospital after being charged with a crime.
A white female lawyer accepts the case to defend her in court. Her advice to Ruth is not to make this an issue of race. But her story is shared in the media and challenges her advice. The lives of Ruth’s family members, her lawyers, and the babies are woven together examining the beliefs of all, the decisions made and the consequences suffered.
The many layers of this story will have you examining the choices you would make based on your principles, values, and experiences.
As a fan of this author, I was not disappointed. Although the end may seem rushed, it has an unpredictable twist - in true Jodi Picoult style.

BASD Wellness Walking Programs
The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year.
Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even!
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3 days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked per day)
Here you can find a way to compete among family members, friend groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!
