![]() Grant for Messinger St. Floods in Bangor
The Borough of Bangor is the recipient of a nearly $2 million Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) grant to address flooding on Messinger Street, according to state Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth). The money will be used to replace the existing slate box culvert with a storm sewer. “The effort to secure this grant began a number of years ago and is great news for property owners who endured flood damage in the Messinger Street area,” said Emrick. “Borough officials were very pleased when I called them to announce the award.” PENNVEST was founded in 1988 to fund sewer, storm water and drinking water projects in the Commonwealth. They offer grants to municipalities and loans to individuals and Brownfield redevelopment efforts. Questions about this or any legislative issue should be directed to Emrick’s district office at(610) 746-5090 or (570) 897-0401. WDIY 88.1 FM Delivers

“Innovations Challenge” Contest for High School Students
Harrisburg, PA: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) today invited high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to take part in the first PennDOT Innovations Challenge.
“Every hour, about 15 reportable traffic crashes occur in Pennsylvania and although we have made positive steps towards reducing traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities, a disproportionate number of these crashes involve teenagers,” said PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards. “Through PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge, we are inviting high school students to become an active part of the solution in helping develop innovative ways to tackle this real transportation concern.”
The PennDOT Innovations Challenge asks students to look at technologies and innovative methods, aside from traditional paid advertising, marketing and
social media channels, that can be developed in the next five to ten years to curb unsafe teen driving practices.
“Each day, schools across the commonwealth work to provide a secure, healthy learning environment for students, and it is critical that students remain
safe even when they’re outside the classroom,” said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. “The Innovations Challenge presents an opportunity for
Pennsylvania’s teenagers to learn and be creative in support of an important cause, and will remind them to practice safe driving when they’re on the road.”
The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds
to the very real possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. “The perception is far too often that PennDOT only employs engineers and
equipment operators,” Richards said. “While those positions are key to building, and maintaining Pennsylvania’s vast road and bridge network, the
reality is that we employ over 11,000 Pennsylvanians from a huge variety of educational backgrounds.”
Through the PennDOT Innovations Challenge, 11 regional winners will be selected and be invited to compete in Harrisburg for the grand championship in April 2018. PennDOT intends for the Innovations Challenge to become an annual event.
For complete Innovations Challenge details visit www.penndot.gov/innovation. The deadline for submissions is January 31.

Cartwright Legislation to Protect Veterans Passes Committee
Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright’s bipartisan legislation to protect older, low-income veterans from financial scams passed the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The Veterans Care Financial Protection Act (H.R. 3122) would direct the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to work with other federal agencies and states to develop and implement standards that protect veterans from predatory practices.
The VA offers an Aid & Attendance (A&A) benefit for veterans who qualify for a VA pension, and need financial help with in-home care or assisted living. The A&A application is free, but scam artists have targeted veterans and charged them to obtain these benefits. With this information, scammers can take hold of the veteran’s assets, and may even move them into an irrevocable trust or an annuity. This movement of assets may also disqualify the veteran from other assistance, such as Medicaid.
“Scam artists are turning the well-deserved A&A benefit into a financial nightmare for those who can least afford it,” said Rep. Cartwright. “There needs to be greater safeguards for our veterans. This bipartisan, commonsense proposal will help protect veterans from financial scams. We owe this to our nation’s heroes.”

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 21
Guggenheim Museum opens in New York City 1959
On this day in 1959, on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, thousands of people line up outside a bizarrely shaped white concrete building that resembled a giant upside-down cupcake. It was opening day at the new Guggenheim Museum, home to one of the world’s top collections of contemporary art.
Mining tycoon Solomon R. Guggenheim began collecting art seriously when he retired in the 1930s. With the help of Hilla Rebay, a German baroness and artist, Guggenheim displayed his purchases for the first time in 1939 in a former car showroom in New York. Within a few years, the collection—including works by Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Marc Chagall—had outgrown the small space. In 1943, Rebay contacted architect Frank Lloyd Wright and asked him to take on the work of designing not just a museum, but a “temple of spirit,” where people would learn to see art in a new way.
Over the next 16 years, until his death six months before the museum opened, Wright worked to bring his unique vision to life. To Wright’s fans, the museum that opened on October 21, 1959, was a work of art in itself. Inside, a long ramp spiraled upwards for a total of a quarter-mile around a large central rotunda, topped by a domed glass ceiling. Reflecting Wright’s love of nature, the 50,000-meter space resembled a giant seashell, with each room opening fluidly into the next.
