Marijuana Use Rises Among Pregnant Women

Marijuana is the illicit drug most commonly used by pregnant woman, and now its use is increasing, a new study finds. According to urine samples from about 300,000 women in California, more than 7 percent of them had marijuana in their systems while they were pregnant, the researchers found. This is likely bad news for fetuses, as "initial evidence suggests that prenatal marijuana may impair fetal growth and neurodevelopment," the researchers wrote in the study. In the study, the researchers divided the pregnant women into different age groups. Overall, the rate of pregnant women using marijuana increased, growing from 4.2 percent in 2009 to 7.1 percent in 2016, according to the research, which was published online Dec. 26 in the journal JAMA. During the study period, the use of pot rose in every age group, but its sharpest increase occurred in women younger than 24 years of age. In women younger than 18, it rose from 12.5 percent to almost 22 percent, and in women ages 18 to 24 years, it increased from almost 10 percent to 19 percent during the study period. Fewer older women used pot while pregnant, the study found. For instance, the rate of women ages 25 to 34 years old who used pot rose from about 3 percent to about 5 percent, while the rate for women older than 34 increased from about 2 percent to about 3 percent from 2009 to 2016. However, it's possible that some of the women took pot before they realized they were pregnant. Marijuana can stay in the body for up to 30 days, and the women gave urine samples when they were eight weeks (56 days) pregnant, the researchers said. The reasons behind the increase may be explained by society's budding acceptance of the substance. Moreover, California legalized medical marijuana in 1996, and recreational marijuana will be available in the state on Jan. 1, 2018. However, it appears that women may not understand the risk of using marijuana while they are pregnant. Another survey conducted between 2007 and 2012 found that 79 percent of women reported they thought there was "little to no harm in prenatal [marijuana] use," the researchers wrote in the study. A Pennsylvania New Year Tradition
In the South, it is black-eyed peas. In much of Pennsylvania, the New Year doesn't begin without a steaming dish of pork and sauerkraut. It's not fine dining. It's a sloppy, pale gray-green-yellow mess of cabbage and pork that's rooted in Pennsylvania Dutch tradition and served up on New Year's Day with the promise of guaranteeing good luck. Approaching the first of the year, supermarkets start advertising sauerkraut deals and the most traditional Pennsylvanians prepare to retrieve Ball jars from their cellars filled with sauerkraut prepared the previous fall. Served up at firehouse dinners and churches and eaten by generations of superstitious folk, pork and sauerkraut is plain, old Pennsylvania Dutch comfort food at its best with brown sugar or applesauce (in some versions) serving as the only "fancy" ingredient. Salt and pepper is as spicy as it gets. But if you've never had sauerkraut juice pool in your mashed potatoes, you are sincerely missing out. Why is it good luck? Well, there have been theories about cabbage and pigs being symbols of prosperity, but Tom Gerhart, a board member and assistant editor for the Pennsylvania German Society in Kutztown, Pa., like any good Pennsylvania Dutchmen, says that's just bologna. Instead, he says, the Pennsylvania Dutch -- which includes the Amish, but they're only a small segment of the culture -- are both religious and superstitious. And from generation to generation, eating pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day was just something you did, much like firing guns around midnight as a way to ward off evil spirits and those things you want to shed from the previous year and to ring in the next one. Regardless of the reasons -- and whether your pork and sauerkraut brings you a year of good luck or an evening of indigestion -- it's still good eating. So come here, once, as the Pennsylvania Dutch would say, and Pennsylvanians will share their tributes to the dish.

Time to Renew Dog Licenses
Pet owners are reminded to renew their dog’s license for 2018. All dogs three months of age or older must be licensed in Pennsylvania, either on an annual basis or with a lifetime license.
Annual license fees vary from $6.50 to $8.50, with fee reductions for senior citizens and those owners with disabilities. Lifetime license costs are $31.50 or $51.50. Completed applications must be returned to the owner’s county treasurer’s office. Applications for license renewals can be found by clicking here. Under Pennsylvania state law, owners who fail to license and/or immunize their dogs could face fines up to $300 per violation for each dog three months of age or older. Farmers Be Counted!
Farmers across Pennsylvania are encouraged to take part in the 2017 Census of Agriculture being conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The census seeks to count anyone who earns at least $1,000 per year growing food or other crops. The data is used to develop food and agriculture policies and programs for the entire country, including funding decisions. Census questionnaires are being mailed to farmers, ranchers and growers this month. The 2017 census form, which requires an estimated 50 minutes to complete, must be returned by Feb. 5, 2018, but respondents are encouraged to respond online at www.agcensus.usda.gov. The web-based questionnaire allows access from any electronic device, and farmers can return their draft responses as their schedules allow. The new online form saves time and improves convenience for respondents, while capturing a more detailed account of U.S. farming and ranching. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 28First commercial movie screened 1895 On this day in 1895, the world’s first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was made by Louis and Auguste Lumiere, two French brothers who developed a camera-projector called the Cinematographe. The Lumiere brothers unveiled their invention to the public in March 1895 with a brief film showing workers leaving the Lumiere factory. On December 28, the entrepreneurial siblings screened a series of short scenes from everyday French life and charged admission for the first time. Movie technology has its roots in the early 1830s, when Joseph Plateau of Belgium and Simon Stampfer of Austria simultaneously developed a device called the phenakistoscope, which incorporated a spinning disc with slots through which a series of drawings could be viewed, creating the effect of a single moving image. The phenakistoscope, considered the precursor of modern motion pictures, was followed by decades of advances and in 1890, Thomas Edison and his assistant William Dickson developed the first motion-picture camera, called the Kinetograph. The next year, 1891, Edison invented the Kinetoscope, a machine with a peephole viewer that allowed one person to watch a strip of film as it moved past a light. In 1894, Antoine Lumiere, the father of Auguste (1862-1954) and Louis (1864-1948), saw a demonstration of Edison’s Kinetoscope. The elder Lumiere was impressed, but reportedly told his sons, who ran a successful photographic plate factory in Lyon, France, that they could come up with something better. Louis Lumiere’s Cinematographe, which was patented in 1895, was a combination movie camera and projector that could display moving images on a screen for an audience. The Cinematographe was also smaller, lighter and used less film than Edison’s technology.

On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
