Is Friday the 13th Really Unlucky?
The origin of why Friday the 13th is considered such an unlucky day goes back hundreds of years and is shrouded in mystery.
For a start there is October 13, 1307, the date from where the modern basis for the Friday the 13th superstition is most likely to come from. It was on this day that the Pope of the Roman Catholic church, in combination with the King of France, sentenced a monastic military order known as the Knights Templar to death and ordered the torture and crucifixion of their leader. The sixth day of the week, Friday, and the number 13 are each considered to be unlucky in their own right, and when combined they are doubly bad. The reason why Friday is considered such an unlucky day could date as far back as biblical times. Many negative biblical events took place on a Friday, including the ejection of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, the start of the Great Flood, and the crucifixion of Jesus. Friday's position as the unlucky day may have been strengthened by it being the day of execution of criminals for many years, commonly called Hangman's Day. The number 13 has also been associated with bad luck for hundreds of years. Scandinavians believed 13 signified bad luck because their 13th mythological demigod Loki was an evil one who brought great misfortune upon humans. Christians look to the Last Supper for their suspicion of the number 13. Thirteen was the number of guests at the table, the 13th person being Judas the traitor. Meanwhile, some say the number 13 was purposely vilified by the priests of patriarchal religions because it represented femininity. Thirteen corresponded to the number of lunar (menstrual) cycles in a year, and the number was revered in prehistoric goddess-worshipping cultures. Hindus believed that it was unlucky for 13 people to gather in one place. Of course, all these possible explanations are just speculation and guesswork, but that does not stop a lot of people cowering away whenever a Friday the 13th comes around.

Introduction to Fly Fishing Saturday, October 14, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly fish or what fly fishing is? Now is your opportunity to try fly fishing at no cost to you: no fishing license or equipment needed! This course is designed for families interested in learning the basics of fly fishing equipment and casting techniques. On water skills and fishing will be provided at a nearby pond on Bushkill Township “Preserved Open Space” located on Kromer Rd. approximately 3 miles from the visitor center. Participants must provide their own transportation to the fishing site. This course is the perfect place to learn fly fishing basics and meet other people interested in fishing! Invite your friends, family or anybody else who may be interested in joining you for a day of fun on the water with a fly. This program is a partnership between PA Fish and Boat Commission, Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center and the Forks of the Delaware Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Professor Raising Money For Puerto Rico Dr. Javier Ávila, author, poet, and professor of English at Northampton Community College, will present his acclaimed one man show, The Trouble with My Name, on Thursday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center. Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila was named the 2015 PA Professor of the Year, the first Latino to ever receive the award. Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres. The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 13White House cornerstone laid 1792 The cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence in the newly designated capital city of Washington. In 1800, President John Adams became the first president to reside in the executive mansion, which soon became known as the “White House” because its white-gray Virginia freestone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings. The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation’s capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies. Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached. 10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. October 15th -21st, 2017 October 15th thru the 21st will be “National Friends of the Library Week”. Locally, the Friends of the Bangor Public Library, are a vibrant and industrious group of volunteers. As a means of garnering funds for the library the Friends conduct the following events each year: two “Used Books Sales” one at the Bee Hive the first week in May and at the Blue Valley Farm Show, two “Brunch with the Authors” featuring local literary artists, The Annual Downtown “Duck Race”, “Breakfast with Santa” the first Saturday in December, a Fall “Bake Sale”, and “Wine Tasting” event in November. The Friends also produce a Newsletter four times a year. 100% of the proceeds they raise are given to the Bangor library for operating expenses. This year, the Friends, are also initiating a major project to upgrade the children’s reading section. The Friends meet the 4th Thursday @ 7:00 PM and invite anyone who is interested in joining to attend. Associate members are also accepted to help with the fund raising projects. Talking Peace, a Peace and Justice Conference, is set for October 19 at Northampton Community College. It is the eighth annual Peace and Justice Conference to take place at the College and will focus on 50 years of peace and justice activism in the United States. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors. Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM. The PoconoArts staff will manage the store 10AM-4PM, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours handled by volunteers. Fees for participation are:
