THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 2
Spruce Goose flies 1947
The Hughes Flying Boat—the largest aircraft ever built—is piloted by designer Howard Hughes on its first and only flight. Built with laminated birch and spruce, the massive wooden aircraft had a wingspan longer than a football field and was designed to carry more than 700 men to battle.
Howard Hughes was a successful Hollywood movie producer when he founded the Hughes Aircraft Company in 1932. He personally tested cutting-edge aircraft of his own design and in 1937 broke the transcontinental flight-time record. In 1938, he flew around the world in a record three days, 19 hours, and 14 minutes.
Following the U.S. entrance into World War II in 1941, the U.S. government commissioned the Hughes Aircraft Company to build a large flying boat capable of carrying men and materials over long distances. The concept for what would become the “Spruce Goose” was originally conceived by the industrialist Henry Kaiser, but Kaiser dropped out of the project early, leaving Hughes and his small team to make the H-4 a reality. Because of wartime restrictions on steel, Hughes decided to build his aircraft out of wood laminated with plastic and covered with fabric. Although it was constructed mainly of birch, the use of spruce (along with its white-gray color) would later earn the aircraft the nickname Spruce Goose. It had a wingspan of 320 feet and was powered by eight giant propeller engines.

Book Review
by Sonia Pin
Gifford Pinchot and the First Foresters, by Bibi Gaston
While researching in the Library of Congress, the author came across several boxes of material containing the memoirs of her great grand uncle, Gifford Pinchot. Pinchot, with the support and encouragement of Teddy Roosevelt, the President at the time, established the United States Forest Service. Thirty years later, Pinchot sent a letter to all of the original forest rangers asking them for any remembrances they might have of those early formative days.
The result was the material Gaston found in the Library archives—some 5000 pieces. The reasons why these people chose to work for the Forest Service are varied, and their letters reflect them. There was the medical student who dropped out to live outdoors, the teenaged orphan who needed a job, and the midwest farmer from a dust bowl who wanted to plant green trees.
Their mission was not an easy one. They built trails by hand through virgin forest; they climbed towering pines to string telephone wires; they lived in tents, cooked over a wood fire, and hunted their own food when necessary. They often worked alone, out of communication with anyone for weeks at a time.
The story is not only about the men of the Forest Service. Pinchot appreciated the role the women in this pioneer effort, whether they were the steadfast wives of the rangers or the clerical support staff at the Washington, D.C. headquarters.
Opposition to the Forest Service was fierce in some areas of the country, especially where timber and mining was big business. Lumber barons could no longer take trees from wherever or whenever they wanted from the public lands. The element of danger was always present.
These communications to Pinchot give a look into the early history of the American Conservation Movement and, as the forward suggests, the letters “paint a picture of an earlier America when there was a greater connection to each other, more civility at home and humility abroad.”

BASD Wellness Walking Programs
The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year.
Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies.
Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached.
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3 days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked per day)
Here you can find a way to compete among family members, friend groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!

Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres.
The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography.
Ávila, a renowned poet and novelist, achieved international recognition when his bestselling novel "Different" became an award-winning motion picture, "Miente," which was screened in over a dozen countries.
Suggested donations include: first aid kits, LED candles, garbage bags, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, can openers, canned foods and milk, baby food, baby formula, soap, baby wipes, diapers, water filtration bottles, bug repellent, feminine hygiene products, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, and solar light bulbs.
