Browns Presenting Letters to the Homefront
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers.
Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house that was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war.
As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed.
Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons.

Burglary, Criminal Trespassing, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Mischief, Theft
22 yr old male – Heitzman Rd., Pen Argyl PA
On July 10th, 2017 at 8:34am SBRPD officers were dispatched to a residence on the 300 block of E. Third St., Wind Gap Borough for a burglary. Officers found no one inside the home. The house had no one living inside and was for sale. Inside the residence, police found a PA registration plate that belonged to the man. Also inside, police found clothes and a construction sign which, after being interviewed, the man admitted to stealing. Police interviewed him on July 11th and through that interview, charged him with the above crimes. He did admit to being inside the residence and damaging the interior. He was arraigned and remanded to the Northampton County Prison on $50,000 bail.

Live Aid concert - 1985
On July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. Continued at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and at other arenas around the world, the 16-hour “superconcert” was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations. In a triumph of technology and good will, the event raised more than $125 million in famine relief for Africa.
Live Aid was the brainchild of Bob Geldof, the singer of an Irish rock group called the Boomtown Rats. In 1984, Geldof traveled to Ethiopia after hearing news reports of a horrific famine that had killed hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians and threatened to kill millions more. After returning to London, he called Britain’s and Ireland’s top pop artists together to record a single to benefit Ethiopian famine relief. “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was written by Geldof and Ultravox singer Midge Ure and performed by “Band Aid,” an ensemble that featured Culture Club, Duran Duran, Phil Collins, U2, Wham!, and others. It was the best-selling single in Britain to that date and raised more than $10 million.
With the crisis continuing in Ethiopia, and the neighboring Sudan also stricken with famine, Geldof proposed Live Aid, an ambitious global charity concert aimed at raising more funds and increasing awareness of the plight of many Africans. Organized in just 10 weeks, Live Aid was staged on Saturday, July 13, 1985. More than 75 acts performed, including Elton John, Madonna, Santana, Run DMC, Sade, Sting, Bryan Adams, the Beach Boys, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Queen, Duran Duran, U2, the Who, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton. The majority of these artists performed at either Wembley Stadium in London, where a crowd of 70,000 turned out, or at Philadelphia’s JFK Stadium, where 100,000 watched. Thirteen satellites beamed a live television broadcast of the event to more than one billion viewers in 110 countries. More than 40 of these nations held telethons for African famine relief during the broadcast.

"Refiner's Ministry and Portland Councilwoman, Heather Fischer will bring a short but impactful program to any children 5 and up on Thursday nights this July in Portland. It is our goal to bring the basics back to children in this area. To focus on the very simple things in life that make it a better place. Showing pride in your community, having respect, showing kindness and encouraging random acts of kindness and honesty.
You are welcome to attend any that you are able!
THE FIRST NIGHT WILL BE JULY 6 AT 6:30 PM AND WE WILL FOCUS ON PRIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY.
We will begin the night with some words from Judge Alicia Zito about what pride in your community means and things that your child can do to show that pride and help others show that pride.
While Judge Zito is speaking, your child will be given a canvas to encourage their artistic side by painting what community looks like through their eyes!
Another fun activity will follow along with a snack and then a quick recap for what to expect the following week!

Piggyback helmet allows children to 'drive' parents
(UPI) -- A New York company is seeking funding for an unusual invention -- a helmet that allows children riding piggyback to "drive" their parents.
The Piggyback Driver consists of a helmet bearing a set of handlebars to allow kids riding piggyback to "steer" their parents or other patient adults. The helmets feature a vibration system that tells the wearer which way the child is attempting to steer, as well as "turbo" button that triggers lights and sounds. The helmets also feature turn signals and a horn. The inventors have created a demo video featuring their prototype, but they said they are still seeking investors to help put the toy into production and bring it to market. |

Tasty Tuesdays at Trinity Lutheran Church
Trinity Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Slatebelt Community this summer. Tasty Tuesdays will begin on June 13 and will run until August 8th. Every Tuesday the bag lunch will be available between 11am- 1pm and will contain a sandwich, fresh fruit/vegetable, chips, healthy snack bar, and a drink. Bus Trip to National Civil War Museum
Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Reservations are required and a light lunch will be provided. Tickets are available at Bray’s News, 36 Broadway and Heard’s Market, 501 South Main Street, both in Bangor, PA. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. If you have a musical instrument that is gathering dust, and you want to make a difference in a child’s life, call 610-588-5198. We will pick them up or tell you where you can drop them off. "Refiner's Ministry and Portland Councilwoman, Heather Fischer will bring a short but impactful program to any children 5 and up on Thursday nights this July in Portland. It is our goal to bring the basics back to children in this area. To focus on the very simple things in life that make it a better place. Showing pride in your community, having respect, showing kindness and encouraging random acts of kindness and honesty.
You are welcome to attend any that you are able!
THE FIRST NIGHT WILL BE JULY 6 AT 6:30 PM AND WE WILL FOCUS ON PRIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY.
We will begin the night with some words from Judge Alicia Zito about what pride in your community means and things that your child can do to show that pride and help others show that pride.
While Judge Zito is speaking, your child will be given a canvas to encourage their artistic side by painting what community looks like through their eyes!
Another fun activity will follow along with a snack and then a quick recap for what to expect the following week!

Browns Presenting Letters to the Homefront
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers.
Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war.
As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed.
Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons.

Walkers are also welcome to participate. Registration by July 14 is $25.00 for Adults and $10.00 for ages 12 and under, and is an additional $5 if registering on July 15. This event takes place rain or shine. Come out and try this challenging and scenic course.

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a non-profit, educational corporation dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. At Quiet Valley history comes to life on our 19th century farmstead. School and group tours are by reservation from Labor Day until June and tours for the general public run from the third Saturday in June through Labor Day Monday. Period-dressed “family” members reenact the life of the original Pennsylvania German farming family who lived on the farm from the late1760s to 1913. Crash Course in Celtic Song Writing Class
The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will host a Celtic song writing class to encourage creative musicians interested in developing their musical skills.
Executive Director, Jayne Ann Recker states that the idea for the class came from the Celtic Song Writing Contest held at the Celtic Classic. The contest is for ameatur musicians and many inquire where they can find more instruction. The partnership with instructor Jim Carolan was the perfect fit.
As part of the continued educational programming, CCA is presenting a Crash Course in Celtic Songwriting by Jim Carolan of Big Daddy Songs on Thursday, July 20, 2017. This workshop is to encourage the continued tradition of Celtic tunes and to help those interested in entering the Celtic songwriting contest at Celtic Classic in September.
Jim Carolan, a Top 5 Billboard Hit Songwriter and International Award winning professional songwriter, will be the instructor from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Life in Christ Church, 51 E. Hillmond St. Bethlehem, 18018.

The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. Bus Trip to National Civil War Museum
Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Reservations are required and a light lunch will be provided. Tickets are available at Bray’s News, 36 Broadway and Heard’s Market, 501 South Main Street, both in Bangor, PA.
