Man Flu May be Real![]() U.S. News
Ladies, when he says he's sick, believe him: The "man flu" may actually be real. Dr. Kyle Sue, an assistant professor of family medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada conducted research to study if men were really worse off than women when they fall ill or if they're just exaggerating their minor ailment derided as a case of the "man flu." "It's a frequently heard stereotype," he told CNN. The concept of the man flu is so well known there's an entry about it in Oxford dictionary, where it's defined as "a cold or similar minor ailment as experienced by a man who is regarded as exaggerating the severity of the symptoms." "The concept of man flu, as commonly defined, is potentially unjust. Men may not be exaggerating symptoms but have weaker immune responses to viral respiratory viruses, leading to greater morbidity and mortality than seen in women," Sue says in his study. Sue's research, published in the BMJ medical journal, analyzed relevant studies related to respiratory diseases, the common cold, intensive care, the flu and viral infections. Symptoms between men and women were compared in each study. From his research, Sue concluded there was a gender "immunity gap." He found a man's immune system may be naturally weaker than a woman's, and with some illnesses, especially respiratory diseases, men are more susceptible to complications than women. This is because of hormonal differences in the genders. The masculine hormone testosterone suppresses the immune system, while the feminine hormone estradiol is immunoprotective. Sue stressed this is "certainly not definitive," and other scientists argue there is not enough evidence to conclude man flu exists. As a remedy to the "man flu," Sue suggests lots of rest. "There are benefits to energy conservation when ill. Lying on the couch, not getting out of bed, or receiving assistance with activities of daily living could also be evolutionarily behaviours that protect against predators," Sue (half) jokes in his study. A possible treatment for the man flu? A man cave. "Perhaps now is the time for male friendly spaces," Sue suggests, "equipped with enormous televisions and reclining chairs, to be set up where men can recover from the debilitating effects of man flu in safety and comfort." Tax Credits Available to Help Farmers
Harrisburg, PA - Pennsylvania farmers who want to implement best management practices (BMPs) or purchase on-farm conservation equipment should apply for 2017-18 Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program tax credits.
REAP is a Pennsylvania tax credit program for agricultural producers who install BMPs or make equipment purchases that reduce nutrient and sediment runoff, which improves Pennsylvania’s streams and watersheds. The program is administered by Pennsylvania’s State Conservation Commission, which provides support and oversight to the state's 66 county conservation districts.
“Ten years ago, we developed REAP in partnership with the General Assembly, as a new way to encourage and improve conservation efforts on Pennsylvania farms,” said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding. “Since then, farmers have implemented more than 4,800 projects, with impressive results. Their efforts have kept nearly 12 million pounds of nitrogen, nearly 800,000 pounds of phosphorus, and more than 700,000 tons of sediment where they belong: in our fields, where they contribute to agricultural productivity, rather than threatening our waterways and the species that call them home.”
Farmers may receive tax credits of up to $150,000 per agricultural operation for 50 to 75 percent of the project’s cost. The most commonly approved projects are for no-till planting and precision ag equipment, waste storage facilities, Conservation Plans, Nutrient Management Plans, and protecting barnyards and other areas with animals. Cover crops and riparian stream buffers are also popular REAP-eligible practices. REAP can be used in conjunction with other funding sources, such as the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) or the Chesapeake Bay Program to help install BMPs.
REAP applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
“There’s still a lot of work ahead,” Redding said, noting that the agriculture industry is expected to make 75 percent of Pennsylvania’s total nutrient load reductions. REAP is an important mechanism to improve the viability of our farms and the health of our waterways – which benefits Pennsylvanians and everyone downstream.”
Private investors may act as project sponsors by providing capital in exchange for tax credits. Any individual or business subject to taxation through personal income tax, corporate net income tax, the bank shares tax or others is eligible to participate in REAP.
Since the program began in 2007, REAP has awarded tax credits to more than 4,800 projects totaling more than $68 million. Public and private investments in REAP have contributed to the conservation projects, worth more than $165 million.
The 2017-18 REAP application packet, as well as other information about REAP, is available on the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s website or by contacting Joel Semke at 717-705-4032 or jsemke@pa.gov. For more information about the Chesapeake Bay strategy, visit the department’s website.

The arrival of the New Year is often accompanied by New resolve, New direction, New plans and sometimes a New lease on life. A Clean Slate, the Slate Belt’s Addiction Recovery Center, looks to the New Year as a time to offer New Opportunity! Two programs will begin in January that interface the arts with life skills, introspection and personal development.
Beginning January 10th, A Clean Slate will once again partner with Bloom Creative Studios to offer a six week Life Coaching and Art Journaling series. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 18
Mayflower docks at Plymouth Harbor 1620
On December 18, 1620, the British ship Mayflower docked at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, and its passengers prepared to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony.
The famous Mayflower story began in 1606, when a group of reform-minded Puritans in Nottinghamshire, England, founded their own church, separate from the state-sanctioned Church of England. Accused of treason, they were forced to leave the country and settle in the more tolerant Netherlands. After 12 years of struggling to adapt and make a decent living, the group sought financial backing from some London merchants to set up a colony in America. On September 6, 1620, 102 passengers–dubbed Pilgrims by William Bradford, a passenger who would become the first governor of Plymouth Colony–crowded on the Mayflower to begin the long, hard journey to a new life in the New World.
On November 11, 1620, the Mayflower anchored at what is now Provincetown Harbor, Cape Cod. Before going ashore, 41 male passengers–heads of families, single men and three male servants–signed the famous Mayflower Compact, agreeing to submit to a government chosen by common consent and to obey all laws made for the good of the colony. Over the next month, several small scouting groups were sent ashore to collect firewood and scout out a good place to build a settlement. Around December 10, one of these groups found a harbor they liked on the western side of Cape Cod Bay. They returned to the Mayflower to tell the other passengers, but bad weather prevented them from docking until December 18. After exploring the region, the settlers chose a cleared area previously occupied by members of a local Native American tribe, the Wampanoag. The tribe had abandoned the village several years earlier, after an outbreak of European disease. That winter of 1620-1621 was brutal, as the Pilgrims struggled to build their settlement, find food and ward off sickness. By spring, 50 of the original 102 Mayflower passengers were dead. The remaining settlers made contact with returning members of the Wampanoag tribe and in March they signed a peace treaty with a tribal chief, Massasoit. Aided by the Wampanoag, especially the English-speaking Squanto, the Pilgrims were able to plant crops–especially corn and beans–that were vital to their survival. The Mayflower and its crew left Plymouth to return to England on April 5, 1621.
