Ref Uses Head for Extra Point
Luis Aranda, kicker for Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, made the extra point attempt during the second quarter Friday after a touchdown against El Paso's El Dorado High School.
A video posted to YouTube by Marshall Hughes shows the ball appear to be traveling far too low to the ground for a successful point, but the ball hits the head of a referee standing in front of the goal and bounces just high enough to go over the crossbar and make it between the posts.
The video shows the game's referees appear to be momentarily baffled before declaring the kick good.
"Talk about special teams player of the week!" Hughes wrote in the video's description.
Midland Lee ended up winning the game 35-16.

Megaphone Will Hear Noise in Forests
The students and Hannes Praks, head of the school's Interior Architecture department and the project leader, said the 10-foot-diameter megaphones installed Sept. 18 in a Voru County forest area are designed for visitors to sit inside and listen to the amplified sounds of nature.
"We'll be placing the three megaphones at such a distance and at a suitable angle, so at the center of the installation, sound feed from all three directions should create a unique merged surround sound effect," Praks said.
The students said the megaphones, which were originally pitched by architecture student Birgit Oigus, were designed to provide a resting area for fans of nature sounds and to also serve as small stages for musical performances.
Estonia is 51 percent covered in forests and the wooded areas play a large part in the country's culture.
Author Valdur Mikita, whose writings include several works about the role forests play in Estonian culture, welcomed the installation of the megaphones.
"It's a place to listen, to browse the audible book of nature -- there hasn't really been a place like that in Estonia before," Mikita said.

Dogs Salvation for Wounded Vets
For some of those veterans, salvation comes with four paws and a wet nose.
"I was done. I was ready to leave this body and this pain," says Roger Lintz, a now-retired Infantry and Special Operations officer who suffered a back injury while on combat duty in Iraq. Two botched surgeries to repair the damage left him severely disabled and in excruciating pain. "I had it all planned out. I knew how I was going to end it."
Lying in bed, pistol in hand, "I just couldn't do it," he recalls. "I couldn't do it in front of my dog."
In February 2012, while between surgeries, the father of two was paired with Niles, a 5-year-old, 100-pound chocolate lab, by Paws for Purple Hearts. The non-profit organization trains and provides service dogs free of charge to veterans with physical disabilities and PTS. The group is one of the many veterans' organizations supported by the Purple Heart Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The foundation also supports other non-profits that provide service dogs to wounded veterans, such as NEADS.
"Service dogs are making the lives of wounded veterans better, and in some cases they're even saving lives," says Jeffrey Roy, president of the board of the Purple Heart Foundation. "Veterans returning from combat face many difficulties. Service dogs help disabled veterans meet physical challenges in day-to-day life, and provide a foundation of stable support and love for those suffering from PTS. The Veteran's Administration does not fund service dog programs for issues like PTS, so it's up to organizations like ours to help these veterans."
Often, a service dog helps his or her veteran in multiple ways. For example, Niles assists Lintz with physical tasks and provides emotional support to help Lintz cope with his PTS. "I can't always tell my wife what I'm going through; I don't want her suffering anymore," says Lintz, who served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army. "Every day I have to put on my Superman suit for the people around me, but I can tell my dog anything. He listens and he understands me without judgment."
"We take great care to identify dogs with the right personality to help someone with PTS," says John Moon, director of client programs and community engagement for NEADS. "Only 50 percent of all the dogs we train will qualify to work with humans, and fewer will be right for working with veterans."
Dogs train for months - Niles trained for a year and a half - as veteran service dogs. Service dogs learn to do a variety of tasks, such as stabilize veterans with mobility issues as they walk, climb stairs, sit or stand; turn lights off and on; open doors and retrieve dropped items (Niles can pick up a single sheet of paper from the floor). They also learn to recognize and respond to a veteran's emotional state, providing calm, comfort and emotional support.
And while all service dogs receive task and obedience training, those helping veterans with PTS must have a special personality.
"We choose the most stable dogs for PTS veterans, and we train them in a variety of situations and settings so that no matter what they experience when they're working with their veteran, no matter what sights or sounds they're exposed to, they'll be able to do their job and provide a stabilizing effect for that veteran," Moon says.
While NEADS and PAWS provide dogs to veterans for free, it costs tens of thousands to train just one dog. Moon says NEADs spends about $47,000 to fully train a service dog for a veteran, and PAWS' website says it spends about $25,000. The support of the Purple Heart Foundation is vital in helping NEADS and other organizations continue to provide dogs to veterans, Moon says. To make a donation in support of veterans, visit www.purpleheartfoundation.org.
His pain controlled by a morphine pump, and with Niles by his side, Lintz now volunteers for PAWS as his way of giving back and helping other veterans.
"I could never repay them for what they've done for me," he says. "They gave me my best friend. They gave me a dog who saved my life."

Apple Festival at Faith Church
Pen Argyl, PA, October 2015: On Saturday October 3, 2015 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Faith United Presbyterian Church will hold its 21st annual Apple Festival. This long running fall event has been the benefactor of one of the largest apple crops in recent memory. Our long time Slate Belt lovers of homemade apple pies and famous apple dumplings are in for a real treat because of this bountiful crop. So to celebrate this year’s Festival, the food menu will include all those old time favorites like turkey and beef barbeque, our baked beans, and the ever popular macaroni & cheese dish.
This year the Festival Committee didn’t forget any of the popular salad offerings and made sure they were on the menu. The large harvest also allows us to feature homemade apple sauce from an old and trusted Faith Church recipe that will tempt you into purchasing a bowl to taste what old time goodness is about. Don’t forget that all of the Festival’s homemade apple pies and dumplings (with or without raisins) go fast and will only be available for take out on a first come, first served basis. So get there early for the best selection. Reverend Ruth Ann Christopher added, “I particularly can’t wait to try that old time apple sauce recipe. It’s really great that there was such a large crop of apples this year so it could be made.” Join Faith Church on Saturday on October 3rd and enjoy the first fruits of this outstanding apple harvest season made into some of the finest desserts. There will be so many delicious apple offerings that you may have to visit the dessert area more than once. Remember that calories are not counted at any of Faith Church’s festivals so you can make that extra trip and enjoy dessert without guilt. Annual Harvest Festival
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm celebrates their 41st Annual Harvest Festival on October 10th and 11th, 2015. This year’s theme is “Green is our Valley – Homesteading.” Many families in the United States are becoming interested in doing more for themselves. They are learning about everything from raising chickens in their backyard to tapping maple trees to make their own syrup. Everyone is interested in buying local produce or growing it on their own. Solar energy, windmills and other energy saving methods are topics of interest. People are having bee hives or using cloth napkins, dehydrating their own fruit or making a compost pile. It all sounds like the Quiet Valley way of doing things. Thinking green, being green, keeps it green. We hope with this year’s theme visitors will learn something they can take home and use that will make them a little more self-sufficient and our world a brighter shade of green.
In addition to demonstrations and displays dealing with the theme, there will be plenty of traditional skills and heritage crafts demonstrated such as spinning, weaving, broom making, scrapple making, apple butter making, basket making, candle making. There will also be plenty of folk entertainment, good country food, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating, a quilt raffle, pony rides, horse drawn wagon rides, one room schoolhouse presentation, outdoor brick bake oven and much more. The New Jersey Frontier Guard will portray French and Indian War soldiers trekking through the farm. The Civil War Encampment is always a favorite at Harvest Festival. The 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. G Re-enactors will portray the drill and everyday life of soldiers in the 19th century giving visitors a special glimpse into local history. DETAILS - Harvest Festival offers visitors of all ages two days of old-fashion fun. All funds raised will help support the mission of our nonprofit educational organization. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is located 3 miles south of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania off of Business Route 209. BHS Author Coming to Bangor Lirary
(BELOW IS A STORY THAT APPEARED IN THIS PAPER AUGUST 4, 2015)
Bangor High graduate Karen (Shoemaker) Katchur has published The Secrets of Lake Road (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press) . Karen Katchur -- Official Author Website .
In her book, Jo has been hiding the truth about her role in her high school boyfriend’s drowning for sixteen years. Every summer, she drops her children off with her mother at the lakeside community where she spent summers growing up, but cannot bear to stay herself; everything about the lake reminds her of the guilt she feels. For her daughter Caroline, however, the lake is a precious world apart; its familiarity and sameness comforts her every year despite the changes in her life outside its bounds. At twelve years old and caught between childhood and adolescence, she longs to win her mother’s love and doesn’t understand why Jo keeps running away.
Then seven-year-old Sara Starr goes missing from the community beach. Rescue workers fail to uncover any sign of her—but instead dredge up the bones Jo hoped would never be discovered, shattering the quiet lakeside community’s tranquility. Caroline was one of the last people to see Sara alive on the beach, and feels responsible for her disappearance. She takes it upon herself to figure out what happened to the little girl. As Caroline searches for Sara, she uncovers the secrets her mother has been hiding, unraveling the very foundation of everything she knows about herself and her family in this riveting novel that is impossible to put down and hard to forget.
Karen Katchur holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University and a Masters of Education degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University. She lives in Eastern Pennsylvania with her husband and two children. She enjoys running and tennis and playing with her flat coat retriever puppy, Tucker and her cat, Carly.

Ask The Doc........
Technology can be wonderful!
garywilliamsdmd.com
I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing.
Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making.
I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile.
It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry.
Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com.
