Wind Gap Becoming Official Trail Town
WIND GAP, Pa. – The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), along with the BATONA Hiking Club and the Appalachian Mountain Club - Delaware Valley Chapter, invite the public to attend the official designation of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, as the newest Appalachian Trail (A.T.) Community™. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Gap Theater, located at 47 S. Broadway in Wind Gap. The public is invited to attend this free event.
“The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is proud to celebrate Wind Gap as an A.T. Community partner in Pennsylvania that is helping to protect and promote the Appalachian Trail,” said Julie Judkins, the ATC’s director of Education and Outreach. “These new partnerships increase local stewardship of public lands, support community initiatives for sustainable economic development and conservation planning and support healthy lifestyles for community citizens.” Immediately following the designation, the community will dedicate an accompanying youth-led mural, painted over the summer at Café on Broadway in Wind Gap. “On the Appalachian Trail” is the fourth mural in the Slate Belt Heritage Mural series and is the first in Wind Gap. The Heritage Murals are a collaboration of the Slate Belt Community Partnership (SBCP) and Totts Gap Arts Institute’s Heritage Mural Education Program, and the murals are researched, designed and executed by teen artists under the direction of James Gloria, artistic director of Totts Gap Arts Institute (TGAI). In addition to the mural dedication, Boy Scout Troop 33 of Pen Argyl will provide a color guard and recite the Outdoor Code, and local teen singing group All Two of Us will perform as well. Honored guests and speakers include Beth Critton, chair of the ATC’s Stewardship Council as well as the ATC’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Karen Lutz. “We know that our community’s brightest future lies in preserving and promoting our assets, such as the Appalachian Trail,” said Sharon Davis, manager of the Slate Belt Community Partnership Regional Main Street Program. “We believe people are looking for an authentic experience. What could be more authentic than coming to Wind Gap to see the beautiful view of the Gap in any season, enjoying the friendly service of our small businesses and participating in outdoor, family friendly activities in our parks or on the Appalachian Trail?” The A.T. has an important place in the Wind Gap community. Two Pen Argyl School District teachers have completed the ATC’s Trail to Every Classroom professional development program, which encourages participants to form a respect for the Trail while engaging with local communities. Now, Wind Gap will continue its involvement with the Trail through its official designation as an A.T. Community™. “By educating our young people on the value of this natural resource, we hope to develop a lifelong commitment to sustaining the Appalachian Trail for future generations and to the long term viability of the community,” said George Hinton, president of Wind Gap Borough Council. “The Appalachian Trail is an economic driver.” Mid-Year New Year's Ball The Monroe Animal League presents the First Annual Mid-Year New Year's Ball on Friday, September 18 from 7 PM to 11 PM at Trout Lake Retreat, 1100 Trout Lake Road, Stroudsburg. Man Ticketed for Drunken Ride:
'Horse Knows the Way Home'
The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office said Jake Williams drove his truck and horse trailer to a daiquiri shop in Denham Springs and he decided to ride the horse rather than drive home in the early morning hours Tuesday.
Williams was stopped while riding the horse, named Sugar, on the side of Highway 16.
Deputies issued Williams a summons for disturbing the peace by public intoxication. The sheriff's office said riding a horse would not qualify Williams for a DWI.
A family member was summoned to take Williams and his horse home.
Williams said he thought riding the horse home was a good idea.
"When you get a little too much to drink, why not ride a horse?" he told WBRZ-TV. "It's safer that way. The horse knows the way home."
However, Williams said he learned his lesson from the summons and will refrain from riding while intoxicated in the future.
AROUND THE HOUSE....
Fall Home and Garden Clean-Up Project Tips
Your MVP during home maintenance season can be the pressure washer. Up to 75 times more powerful than a garden hose, a pressure washer is a versatile tool that offers an efficient way to get a variety of cleaning tasks done.
Deck
Once you’re ready to stash away outdoor furniture for the season, remember to wash it down first for a deeper clean than a garden hose can provide. Before moving these items into storage, first let them dry completely.
Ensure your deck is free of mold and debris. A thorough clean will also serve to prep your deck for weatherproofing with a stain or sealant (another useful task to include on your fall checklist.)
Outdoor Surfaces
Rejuvenate driveways, patios, sidewalks and other large flat surfaces quickly and with no streaking using accessories like the Briggs & Stratton Surface Cleaner that works on a 14-inch diameter in one stroke. It features a dome shape to control overspray to protect walls and flower beds.
Grill
Cleaning your grill is a breeze with a pressure washer. First disconnect the propane tank and move it away from the area. Disconnect any electrical lines. Prop up the hood and remove the grates. Treat the entire grill with a degreasing solution, working from the bottom of the cart up to the grill bed. Let the degreaser work for a few minutes. Be careful around gas hoses, connections, electrical components or heating elements.
Using a general medium-pressure spray pattern, flush detergent and rinse any residue, working from the top down. Let the grill dry thoroughly, then coat with nonstick oil to help reduce future build-up.
Safety
Operate a pressure washer only outside, far away from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas from accumulating and potentially being drawn towards occupied spaces.
Always wear goggles and closed-toe footwear when operating a pressure washer. Don’t spray near children, pets, electrical wires, or power lines. After use, allow the unit to cool down before storing.
Efficiency
To switch between jobs more efficiently, consider a unit that offers versatility in its function. For example, The POWERflow+ model from Briggs & Stratton has a high pressure mode -- ideal for cleaning tough grime -- and a high flow mode which delivers up to five gallons of water per minute to rinse away soap and debris on delicate surfaces like patio furniture, vehicles and second story windows.
For more outdoor fall cleaning tips, and for resources on choosing a pressure washer right for your home’s needs, visit www.briggsandstratton.com.
This fall, get ready for winter with quick and simple outdoor clean-up tasks.

The story is about a young girl on a trip to a local pumpkin patch and how her choice of a pumpkin ostracizes her from her peers.
Her producing team are all Pennsylvania natives. They decided to return to their hometown area to film because they love Pennsylvania and want to bring support to the local community. They are currently crowd-funding through the website Seed&Spark. They are 37% funded toward their goal of $11,000. They need to raise at least 80% of their goal or they lose all of their generous contributions. Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
