This information will get you up to speed quickly. We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at [email protected] and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us. Contacting individual board members would be helpful. Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great. Bangor GFWC provides Club sign at Bangor Park
Mary Bach long time member of the Bangor Womens Club GFWC arranged with Jim Gloria of Totts Gap Art Institute to have a new GFWC sign made and installed on the Welcome to Bangor Sign at the entrance to Bangor Park. This new sign was to replace the sign erected In 2001 when Mary was president of the club. Club members Barbara Frutchey, Heidi Bates, Robin Young, Eleanor Waters, Ellen Prudenti, Clare Osmun, Yvonne Humphreys, Carolyn Smith, Gloria Rice, Joyce Barilla, June Jones, Mary Bach, and Diane Lovelace are shown admiring the newly installed sign. In addition a second sign was installed on the Bangor sign between East Bangor and Bangor on West bound Route 512. The Bangor club was organized in 1913 and has been serving the community continuously since then. The club thanks everyone who supports our fund raising projects that provide funds for charitable and educational purposes. Roseto Memorial Day Service
Martocci-Capobianco Post #750 in Roseto will hold Memorial Day Services on Monday, May 29th. The parade will leave the American Legion on Garibaldi Avenue at 8:30 am. They will arrive at the New Catholic Cemetary at 9:00 am. They will then proceed to the Presbyterian Cemetary for 9:30 services. The West Bangor Memorial Association will hold its Annual Memorial Day Program on Monday, May 29, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Site, Second Street, West Bangor. The year 2017 is the 70th Anniversary of continuous Memorial Day services in West Bangor. The Program will include the recognition of seven living World War II Veterans whose names are listed on the Memorial Plaque in West Bangor. The principal speaker will be Colonel Terry J. Young. Colonel Young is a native of Pen Argyl, a graduate of Pen Argyl High School, and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also has a Masters degree in Educational Psychology and a Masters Equivalent in Strategic Studies. The Roper Quartet will render musical selections. Tanner Barr and Gianna Greggo, both students at Pen Argyl High School, will give recitations of “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” Walter Cole and Kyle Schmidt will play “Taps” in honor of deceased service men and women. The Rev. Msgr. Vincent P. York, pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Pen Argyl will offer the Invocation and Benediction. Opening/closing speaker at ceremony will be Commander James Shoemaker, Guest speaker David Hogarth (Navy Seal of Special Forces), Boy Scout Troop 33, Slate Belt Choir, and Post Chaplin Vincent Dellorto. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church 404 E. Mountain Avenue, Pen Argyl. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 29Jews in Paris are forced to sew a yellow star on their coats - 1942 On this day in 1942, on the advice of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler orders all Jews in occupied Paris to wear an identifying yellow star on the left side of their coats. Joseph Goebbels had made the persecution, and ultimately the extermination, of Jews a personal priority from the earliest days of the war, often recording in his diary such statements as: “They are no longer people but beasts,” and “[T]he Jews… are now being evacuated eastward. The procedure is pretty barbaric and is not to be described here more definitely. Not much will remain of the Jews.” But Goebbels was not the first to suggest this particular form of isolation. “The yellow star may make some Catholics shudder,” wrote a French newspaper at the time. “It renews the most strictly Catholic tradition.” Intermittently, throughout the history of the papal states, that territory in central Italy controlled by the pope, Jews were often confined to ghettoes and forced to wear either yellow hats or yellow stars. Slate Belt Futures exhibit
Slate Belt Futures exhibit will be on display at the Slate Belt Heritage Center, May 14 to June 4th. Design students from the University of Pennsylvania visited the Slate Belt during the fall semester of 2016 and completed projects that re-purpose former industrial sites for future use. The plans show many parts of the Slate Belt and consider safe and innovative uses for familiar places. The sites include quarries, flood plains, fens, railroad beds, and other areas in Slate Belt municipalities. In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
