CLICK HERE TO READ THE MONROE DAILY NEWSATTENTION SLATE BELTDear Fellow Slate Belt Residents, Again, we ask our community to pull together. This time it's not to help build a YMCA but to stop the building of a Sludge Treatment Facility next to the Waste Management landfill in Plainfield Township. We urge as many citizens as possible to find all the information given to us through sludgefree.umbt on Facebook, John Reinhart’s January 17th letter in the Express Times, and the facebook Sludge Free Slate Belt flyers. This information will get you up to speed quickly. We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at [email protected] and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us. Contacting individual board members would be helpful. Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great. The future of our families and neighborhoods are at stake. We will be there in opposition with you. About the STAR Awards
The Star Awards are given annually to a Bangor Area District student who has exhibited either classroom achievement and/or contributions to the school district or society that go above and beyond the classroom. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers, administrators, or other interested parties, and are chosen by a committee of alumni for this honor. STAR Award Recipients 2017 Zakary Kozinski: Zak, a sophomore at BAHS, is a member and vice-president of the Northampton County 4H Club. Through the 4H Club, Zak took on the job of raising a puppy with the hopes that it would become a seeing eye dog for a blind person. He received a Labrador Retriever named Preston in 7th grade, dedicating an extraordinary amount of time to training him until his departure a year later. Zak was informed that Preston was matched with a blind woman in Texas. However, because of an issue with the dog in this placement, Preston was later returned to Zac and his family. Zac is currently a member of the 4H Dairy and Market Swine Clubs. In 2015, he raised two market goats and received ribbons showing them at the 4H Round Up at the Blue Valley Farm Show. Last year he raised two dairy cows and two pigs for his projects and received numerous ribbons for showing them at both the Farm Show and the Plainfield Farmers Fair. Last year, Zak received the Golden Pitchfork Award by 4H, which is given to a person who is always there to lend a hand. At BAHS Zac is a member of the Ski Club and Environthon. Zak enjoys being a farmer and is hoping to attend college to study agriculture. Amalia Abrahamsen: Amalia, a senior at BAHS, is an intelligent, hardworking, enthusiastic young woman with many talents. She is a natural leader who has assumed a very active role in the student body. She is highly involved in extra-curricular activities at BAHS. She is president of the SGA, vice president of the National Honor Society, captain of the varsity soccer team, a member of the Spanish Honor Society, and a member of the class cabinet. She is a 2nd grade volunteer teacher at Club 119:11, a weekend after-school program for elementary students affiliated with her church, where she is also a leader for the church’s junior high youth group. She further assists others as a math tutor to two high school students and as a vocabulary/reading tutor to one elementary student. She sees herself as someone who contributes to making school life a memorable experience for all students. Allison Steinert: Allison is a senior at BAHS, who has distinguished herself as an excellent musician and soloist in the school’s many bands and choirs. She is the drum major in the marching band, president of the choir, and a section leader in both choir and band. She played the lead role in “Beauty and the Beast,” has participated in Northampton County Chorus, Northampton County Band, PMEA District X Chorus, PMEA Region V Chorus, and made the PMEA All-State Chorus. She has received the Daughters of the Revolution Award, and serves as treasurer of the National Honor Society. Allison will attend Susquehanna University and major in music with a vocal emphasis. Her career goals are to become a music educator and performer. She says she wants to be able to inspire and impact students’ lives with music as she has been inspired by her experiences at Bangor. About the Science Award The Horvath Science Award, introduced in 2011, is given annually in honor of Dr. Bert Horvath and his wife, Betty Gregor Horvath, both Bangor graduates who have distinguished themselves in the field of science research. This award recognizes an outstanding science student in the hopes of inspiring the recipient to continue to pursue a career in that field. Horvath Science Award Recipient 2017 Anne Wallace: Anne Wallace is a junior who has excelled in science in high school. According to her teachers, she has a passion for science, is a member of several scientific clubs, and consistently outshines her classmates by mastering extremely difficult concepts in any discipline. Anne placed 2nd in the Envirothon County Competition in 10th grade and received the Slater Academic Award in 11th grade. Her many activities include membership in the Slaters’ symphonic and marching bands, serving as a youth leader in her church, and working at a horse farm. She loves the outdoors and is interested in identification of trees, bird calls, plants, and wildlife. Anne is also ranked number one in her class. She has a specific interest in biology, biochemistry, and genetics and wants to pursue a career in scientific research. Visit our website at www.slateralums.com for more information on these awards. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 13First Battle of the Sexes - 1973 On May 13, 1973, during the early years of the women’s liberation movement, tennis stars Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court face off in a $10,000 winner-take-all challenge match. The 55-year-old Riggs, a tennis champion from the late 1930s and 40s who was notoriously skeptical of women’s talents on the tennis court, branded the contest a “battle of the sexes.” The match, which was played on Mother’s Day and televised internationally, was held on Riggs’ home turf, the San Vincente Country Club in Ramona, California, northeast of San Diego. Proceeds were promised to the American Diabetes Association. Bobby Riggs had originally proposed a male-female match-up to Billie Jean King, whom he dubbed the “leading women’s libber of tennis.” King ignored the offer, but Australian Margaret Court, who had won 89 of her last 92 matches and was the leading money-winner on the women’s professional tour, accepted. Leading up to the match, Riggs loudly and consistently belittled women’s tennis and its players to the media while Court, occupied with raising her one-year-old son, said little. Court was a serve-and volley player, known for her tough play at the net. By contrast, Riggs was a baseliner, and it later became known that he had the court resurfaced to slow the game, giving him time to wind up and put more power into his stroke. The slow surface immediately put Court at a disadvantage. Riggs lobbed Court’s shots back to her, breaking the rhythm she was accustomed to on the hard-hitting women’s tour. Rattled, she lost the match, 6-2, 6-1. Outdoor craft and flea market

In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
