Bangor Library Getting Some 'SPARK'

The Bangor Public Library is about to get some extra SPARK. However, please don’t believe that the library lacks SPARK in the literal sense. What it lacks is a more modern system of cataloging books and providing a better means of organization and making tasks easier for librarians and their aides. Before you run out and tell everyone that they are trashing the Dewey Decimal system, read on. SPARK is a way for libraries to manage their online public catalog as well as their library operations, including cataloging, circulation and acquisitions. The system is currently used by over 1,300 libraries both in the United States and internationally, and has an active and growing community of developers and users. Locally, Nazareth already has the system in place and Bangor will be next, putting the system in place in June. Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton will follow. Bangor Librarian Janet Kichline says Bangor must get their system ready in June. Getting the system up and running, however, is not as simple as downloading a program pushing, “enter” and away you go. And it’s also not a neat little machine that needs to be turned on in the morning and off at night. Not that simple. Not by a long shot. Every book, every DVD and every piece that the library makes available for loan has its own bar code. And all they need to do re-barcode all of those pieces. Problem is - there are 30,000 pieces that need to done. 30,000!! “It’s been a fun task,” Kichline says with a smile. The library is taking advantage of a $2,300 grant from the state for the new bar codes and training to use SPARK. The Bangor Public Library will be closed during the days of May 10 and 11 to work on SPARK, but will be open during the evenings from 5-8pm on those days. According to the SPARKPA.com website, “SPARK libraries are in the vanguard, demonstrating a collaborative alternative to the unsatisfactory way PA libraries traditionally access automation software. Their vision, effort and spirit of cooperation will be rewarded with long term benefits and satisfaction for libraries across the state.” SPARK will also be helpful for Bangor. “When we do statistics for ourselves and the state, I do it manually,” Kichline says. “With this (SPARK) I can get a lot of reports and it’s way easier to use.” SPARK’S effectiveness also will filter down to library patrons who are searching for books and more. Japanese Tales Come to Life at NCC Music, drama and art will stir the imagination. Event is designed as a multi-media night out for the entire family. Snow spirits, Samurai heroes, dragon kings, and dancing goblins will enchant children and adults at “Shadows of the Samurai” on Monday, May 8, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., at Northampton Community College’s (NCC) Lipkin Theatre, Bethlehem Campus. Five traditional Japanese tales of the supernatural, funny and dramatic, will be told through different combinations of pictures, acting, storytelling, music, and abstract images projected on a screen. Presenters will include Mark McKenna, storyteller, former ensemble member and director at Touchstone Theatre, Muhlenberg College faculty member, and artist-in-residence at the Reibman Children’s Center at NCC; Larry Stockman, director of the Kabuki percussion ensemble at Lafayette College and department head of the college’s music program; Nora Suggs, M.D., flutist in Satori, who will perform on Japanese bamboo flutes, and William Christine, painter/visual artist; and Peter Christine, puppeteer. “Shadows of the Samurai” celebrates the 25th anniversary of Art as a Way of Learning, created by NCC in conjunction with Crayola. Art as a Way of Learning places the arts at the center of teaching and learning and is the instructional foundation at the Reibman Children’s Center. As the Reibman Center’s artists-in-residence, McKenna and William Christine use techniques to build an aesthetic language of shape, color, texture, and sound to stimulate children’s imaginations and problem-solving skills. “Children learn first through their senses,” he says. In accordance with these beliefs, he is in the first cohort of the teaching arts certification program at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. This program shows teachers how to use the arts in academic subjects such as reading, math, social studies, sciences, and other disciplines. McKenna received his training at the International Theater School of Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Admission to “Shadows of the Samurai” is open to the public and free. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line. Entertainment This Week
Chair-ity Art Auction Benefit Allentown, PA (4/24/17) - A unique art auction never before seen in the Lehigh Valley will raise funds to benefit the programs and services of Valley Youth House. The "Chair-ity" Art Auction, sponsored by Corporate Environments of Bethlehem, will feature an iconic office chair transformed into stunning works of art by interior designers and architects of area architectural firms. The "Chair-ity" Art Auction is scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Corporate Environments showroom, located at 605 East Broad St. In addition to the 21 chairs that will be auctioned, several other event/experiences will be auctioned, including two tickets to the Pitt vs. Penn State football game at Beaver Stadium on Sept. 9. The event is open to the public, but seating is limited to the first 200 attendees. A donation of $20 per person is requested with advanced reservations. Tickets will not be sold at the door. On this day in 1954, the Salk polio vaccine field trials, involving 1.8 million children, begin at the Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia. Children in the United States, Canada and Finland participated in the trials, which used for the first time the now-standard double-blind method, whereby neither the patient nor attending doctor knew if the inoculation was the vaccine or a placebo. On April 12, 1955, researchers announced the vaccine was safe and effective and it quickly became a standard part of childhood immunizations in America. In the ensuing decades, polio vaccines would all but wipe out the highly contagious disease in the Western Hemisphere.
In the late 1950s, Polish-born physician and virologist Albert Sabin (1906-1993) tested an oral polio vaccine (OPV) he had created from a weakened live virus. The vaccine, easier to administer and cheaper to produce than Salk’s, became available for use in America in the early 1960s and eventually replaced Salk’s as the vaccine of choice in most countries. Today, polio has been eliminated throughout much of the world due to the vaccine; however, there is still no cure for the disease and it persists in a small number of countries in Africa and Asia. BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. The Pocono Arts Council offers you the perfect opportunity to show your artwork and become part of the dynamic arts community of the Pocono area. The Pocono Arts Council Members’ Exhibition 2017 is accepting work on Monday, May 1, 1-3 and 6-8PM. The show is open to all members of the Council, with one piece of artwork per member accepted. Non-members are welcome to participate in the show by joining the Council at drop-off. May 3First Round of JazzFest 2017 Events Performing Arts Live released the first portion of the Allentown JazzFest 2017 schedule. The program has broadened to include live spoken word and conversation performances, and will introduce new musical styles into JazzFest. Consistent with prior years, a large majority of the overall schedule will be free to the public. JazzFest opens on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes Sunday, May 7, 2017.

The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
