Caution: Planes Will Spray For Gypsy Moths
Please be advised that Northampton County is cooperating with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources- Bureau of Forestry, in conducting a gypsy moth suppression project in certain forested sections of Forks, Upper Mt. Bethel, Pen Argyl, Plainfield, Bushkill, Upper Nazareth, Chapman, Moore, Danielsville, Lehigh, Stockertown, Bath, Walnutport and Cherryville this spring.
Please exercise caution in a treatment area during the spray. The insecticide being used on residential properties is Bacillus thuringiensis Var. kurstaki (Bt), a biological insecticide which has no known adverse human health or environmental impacts. The insecticide will be applied by aircraft, either helicopter or fixed wing, flying approximately 50 feet above the treetops between late April and Early June. To avoid the possibility of eye irritation, persons should not look up as the spray droplets are descending. If eye irritation does occur, an eye wash should be used and the family physician consulted. If the material gets on the skin, soap and water are sufficient to remove it. To make spot removal as easy as possible, vehicles which are exposed to the spray should be washed as soon as possible. If the spray has dried, soaking a towel with a car wash soap and water will rehydrate the (Bt) and can then be removed by wiping with a towel or cloth. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. First Earth Day - 1970
Earth Day, an event to increase public awareness of the world’s environmental problems, is celebrated in the United States for the first time. Millions of Americans, including students from thousands of colleges and universities, participated in rallies, marches, and educational programs.
Earth Day was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a staunch environmentalist who hoped to provide unity to the grassroots environmental movement and increase ecological awareness. “The objective was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy,” Senator Nelson said, “and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda.” Earth Day indeed increased environmental awareness in America, and in July of that year the Environmental Protection Agency was established by special executive order to regulate and enforce national pollution legislation. What to Know about Your Tuna Sandwich
(StatePoint) Americans love their tuna. Indeed, the U.S. is the largest market for canned tuna in the world. But according to experts, much of the nation’s canned tuna is not produced sustainably or ethically.“Many of the nation’s largest tuna producers continue to talk a good game on sustainability and human rights, yet have not made the changes needed to shift a destructive industry,” says David Pinsky, Greenpeace USA oceans campaigner.
But there is good news, too. In its second-ever canned tuna ranking, Greenpeace USA found that a number of U.S. retailers have made significant progress toward offering consumers more responsible products. The tuna ranking evaluated the sourcing practices of 20 brands, including whether the fishing method used to catch their tuna harms other marine life, whether they avoid shark finning, and whether they can trace their products back to the sea. In addition, Greenpeace examined the social responsibility of tuna brands. Poor working conditions are systemic in the tuna industry, and in the worst cases, human rights violations and forced labor occur. “Retailers are quickly realizing that consumers want canned tuna products that they can feel good about feeding their families,” says Pinsky. In this year’s ranking, Whole Foods joined Wild Planet, American Tuna, and Ocean Naturals in the ranking’s top green category, identified as the best choices for American consumers. Whole Foods recently made a commitment to sell only sustainable canned tuna nationwide by early 2018, setting the bar for all other U.S. retailers. Wild Planet and American Tuna tied for the top score in the ranking -- both are considered to be trusted sustainable tuna brands that continue to advocate for positive changes throughout the industry. Just below the top-ranked brands are seven retailers in the second-tier yellow category. This is a positive trend compared to Greenpeace’s previous ranking, as a growing number of evaluated brands are providing some good tuna choices that follow better practices when it comes to the environment and worker treatment. Greenpeace says it hopes larger brands like Chicken of the Sea and others will take a leading position in the U.S. market and help move the industry in a more positive direction. For those consumers looking to spend their dollars with brands that treat their workers fairly and mitigate their environmental impact, these overall industry trends are good news. To become a savvy shopper, think beyond the label, which doesn’t always provide the full picture. Experts urge consumers to ask their local grocery store managers to carry brands that are doing the right things, and to consider sharing their opinions. The Bangor Womens Club GFWC is offering a $1000 scholarship for a senior student from Bangor High School or Faith Christian School. Students interested in applying for this scholarship may obtain an application from the school guidance office. Applicants must be planning to begin their college education in September. A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.

A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers
The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Pen Argyl, PA – State Senator Mario Scavello will continue his Healthy Living Series in partnership with Good Shepherd Physical Therapy to offer a free Fall Prevention and Balance Screening at his Pen Argyl District Office on Tuesday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to noon (2 N. Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl).
A physical therapist will be present to perform a Balance and Fall Risk Assessment by conducting a timed sitting and walking exercise. Tips and information will also be provided to help individuals complete a fall prevention self-assessment, which is a checklist of items to check around the house to prevent falls.
“This balance screening will help provide constituents with the information they need to safely navigate their homes,” said Senator Scavello. “Injuries due to falls can be prevented and it is important that individuals know how to identify the risks and respond proactively.”

Totts Gap Art Institute, 1494 Totts Gap Road, Bangor will hold an Arts Fair Sunday, April 30 from 11-4. Over 300 works of art by local Slate Belt K - 12 Students. Awards presentation at 2:00pm.

Jazz Concert and Improvisational Dance
On April 30 at 5 p.m., the Mitchell Cheng Trio will perform a Jazz concert at Totts Gap Arts Institute. Improvisational dancers will dance to the jazz rhythms. This unique event is the first of four such events sponsored by Totts Gap this year.
The next three will feature other jazz groups led by Guitarist Vaughn Stoffey on June 11, Pat McGee on July 9 and Dave Lantz August 6. There is a $10 admission fee. Visit http://www.tottsgap.org for directions.

BMCL Lunch With The Author
The Blue Mountain Community Library will hold an “Lunch With An Author” event on Tuesday, May 2 at Grace United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mountain Ave., Pen Argyl, PA. The church is handicapped accessible with ample parking. (Enter from the lower parking lot). Local author, Kate Moretti, will discuss her latest novel, “The Vanishing Year,” a chilling, powerful tale of nerve-shattering suspense, which tells the story of Zoe Whittaker, a member of Manhattan’s social elite, whose dark past and secrets come back to haunt her. Moretti, who lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two children, has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for ten years as a scientist. She will have a question and answer session about her book and a book signing. Copies will be available to purchase.
Luncheon will be at 12:00 pm (Doors open at 11:30 am) and will consist of soup, sandwich, chips, desserts and beverages. Tickets are $10.00 each and MUST be purchased in advance of the event. First Round of JazzFest 2017 Events
Performing Arts Live released the first portion of the Allentown JazzFest 2017 schedule. The program has broadened to include live spoken word and conversation performances, and will introduce new musical styles into JazzFest. Consistent with prior years, a large majority of the overall schedule will be free to the public. JazzFest opens on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes Sunday, May 7, 2017.
Today’s announcements are the first of a group of performer announcements that will stretch over the next three weeks. It is expected there will be 6 or 7 additional performances to be announced.
All the 2017 events will occur in the Hamilton Street downtown area between 9th and 5th Streets, except for one event in Emmaus. The schedule can be viewed and tickets can be purchased through allentownjazzfest.org.

Fundraiser for BAHS Band Member
A fundraiser to benefit Bangor band member Elizabeth Goffinet's AMA trip to Europe to represent the band will be held at the Bangor Elks Sunday, May 7 from 4-8pm. Tickets include food and drinks, entertainment, 50/50 sold the day of the event.Tickets are $20.00
They are looking for businesses who would like to donate items for a raffle as well.
AMA is the American Music Abroad. It is comprised of musicians from High Schools from PA and New Yotk and are recommended by the school Band Director

The league, in existence for over three decades, will include women’s A and B leagues, co-ed league and a men’s league. Team representatives will submit a copy of their team roster and a check for $150 made payable to Bangor Borough.

Learn to make beautiful flowerpots and bowls for indoor or outdoor use!
These pieces are easy to make and weatherproof!! After creating the forms and letting them air dry, they can be carved or painted or embellished with glass beads or other interesting items. This workshop will teach you about Hypertufa and what you can use to make shapes, go over the shapes you will use for this project and then you will mix your ingredients and create your shapes. Pieces will then be cleaned, scored and painted.

The Bangor Elementary School PTO third annual GLOW SLATERS GLOW Neon 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday May 13 at the Bangor Area School District Complex. The 5K run begins at 9:00am, the Fun Run/Walk begins at 9:15am. There will be five splatter stations.

One highlight will be experiencing the exquisite wisteria in bloom.
The cost of $75 per person includes transportation, lunch at the historic Dimmick Inn, and guided tour. If time permits, we plan for "free time" to explore downtown Milford.

Summer Day Camp.runs Monday through Friday. 9:30 am to 3 pm (early dropoff and late pickup is available to accommodate working parents' schedules).
Ride every day, every rider has a 1:1 Instructor/Side walker/Leadliner as needed, Hands-on Horsemanship, Learn All About Horses, Equine Science, Professional Presentations, Training Tips and Techniques, Games on Horseback!, Trail Ride, Activities and games to win prizes, Campfire, Folders with hand-outs, Tons of fun everyday! Horse Show the last day of camp.
Camp Prices start at $350 for the week. Early Registration $25 Discount if registered by April 15 Another $25 Discount for Iron Gate Farm Riders (scheduled for riding lessons prior to camp registration) $25 Sibling Discount
Ages 6 and up. Groups split up based on ages and riding experience. Beginners to Advanced Riders welcome. Our program is tailored to each individual campers level of knowledge and riding experience.
July 17th camp is an Inclusive camp. Special needs children and typically developing children may both enroll during that week of camp. Special needs children may incur an additional charge if a 1:1 aide is needed.
