Earth Day Planting Workshop.......Making Your Own Customized Planter![]() by Larry Cory
Director of Totts Gap Art Institute Jim Gloria conducted a hypertufa planter workshop Saturday at Ginder’s Greenhouse and Garden Center as part one of an Earth Day program. In two weeks Joann Ginder will finish the program with a planting workshop using hypertufa pots made during the first day of the workshop. Hypertufa is an aggregate of Portland Cement, perlite, peat moss and sand. The materials are mixed together like making concrete (or pasta as one person suggested) and mold it into a pot suitable for planting. The advantage of hypertufa is one’s opportunity to make custom-made pots with its own characteristics rather than using an ordinary store-bought container. The process, however, is not simply mixing the components and placing the mix into a mold. Gloria went through a step-by-step process mixing the materials and mixing in a some historical and scientific tidbits. First, he emphasized safety. “Portland cement is very alkaline and sucks moisture out of your hands,” he said. “You should wear gloves or your hands will be sore.” (Portland cement, he said, was invented in 1840 and was named after stone of the same gray color in Portland, England) The dry nature of the mix produces air-borne particles especially when it’s dry. “Please use a dust mask,” he says. “Once its wet you’re good.” The mixture ratio is three parts cement, two parts perlite, two parts peat and one sand. He says there are other formulas but he likes this one the best. (He also talked about sand with sharp edges versus sand with rounded edges. He said that graded sand, which consists of particles with different sizes, makes the mix tighter ) With the mixture in place on a flat surface he made a volanco-shaped mold and began to add water. Critical to the success of the project is the consistency of the mix through adding just the right amount of water. The end product should not be soupy, but clings together and holds it shape. After that it needs to slowly cure without drying too fast. Moisture, in fact is key to all masonry tasks. Gloria says that before applying plaster to a brick wall, for example, the brick should be moist, otherwise the brick will wick moisture from the mortar and ruin the plaster. Also important, is the rate of evaporation of water from mortar and hypertufa. Drying too fast weakens the final product. To that end, people participating in the workshop were asked to cover their projects with plastic bags to slow evaporation and allow the hypertufa to cure at a slower rate. If you want to try this project on your own the Peat Moss and Perlite are available at Ginders Garden Center. The sand and Portland Cement are available locally at several locations. Rebecca Dioda makes a hypertufa planter under the direction of Jim Gloria of TGAI at Ginders Greenhouse and Garden Center Saturday afternoon. After the planter has cured for two weeks Joann Ginder will oversee the planting portion of the project. PHOTO GALLERY (New photo tomorrow) Sbtt Photo Larry Cory

The Easter Rising begins in Dublin- 1916![]() Around noon on Easter Monday of 1916, some 1,600 Irish nationalists–members of the Irish Volunteers–launch the so-called Easter Rising in Dublin, seizing a number of official buildings and calling on all Irish patriots to resist the bonds of British control.
Since the outbreak of World War I, the leading Irish nationalist, Sir Roger Casement, had pressed the German government to see the potential benefit of an Irish rebellion against British rule. Consequently, on April 2, the German merchant ship Aud was sent to the Atlantic coast of Ireland, loaded with some 20,000 rifles and 1 million rounds of ammunition bound for the hands of the Easter rebels. Before the Aud reached its destination, however, a British ship intercepted it, and the crew members of the Aud scuttled the ship with all its cargo. When Casement himself traveled from Germany to Tralee Bay, also on the Atlantic coast, three weeks later, he was put ashore by the Germans on an inflatable raft. He was subsequently arrested, tried and executed for treason by the British authorities. Meanwhile, plans for the Easter Rising had gone ahead without Casement or German help. Due to last-minute uncertainty, however, one of its leaders canceled the orders for mobilization on the Saturday before the planned uprising—because of this only 1,600 of an expected 5,000 participants gathered at Liberty Hall on April 24 to march towards the center of Dublin. There, they seized the post office, several court buildings, St. Stephen’s Green and several other locations. From the steps of the post office, the rebels declared Ireland an independent republic, stating that We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club.
