The Market strives to uphold the benefits of homegrown living while raising the consciousness of health and well-being. Three myths about the brain![]() Lisa Feldman Barrett, NBC News
Three brain myths, in particular, are repeated on an almost daily basis in news stories around the world. Let's consider them one by one in the hopes that we can finally squash them. The first myth is that the hormone cortisol causes stress. In March 2017 alone, I counted over 250 stories on Google News that call cortisol the "stress hormone." (And that's just in English.) But it's simply not true. Cortisol's main purpose is to provide a quick burst of energy when you need one. Your brain produces a cortisol surge every morning when you wake up, for example, and anytime you exert yourself. You constantly have cortisol in your bloodstream, and your brain regulates the amount throughout the day to help keep you alive and healthy. The second big myth, found in a mere 63 news stories in March, is that a region of the brain called the amygdala is responsible for creating fear, or for creating emotions more generally. This notion dates back to the 1930s when some scientists removed the amygdalae of rhesus monkeys, who then behaved in ways that seemed to show they were fearless (the monkeys, not the scientists). Ever since, the amygdala has been called the brain's fear circuit, fear center, fear detector, fear processor, and dozens of similar names. Nevertheless, more recent research has obliterated any necessary connection between the amygdala and emotion. Your amygdala increases in activity during a wide range of mental phenomena, including thinking, remembering the past, imagining the future, feeling uncertainty, eating, drinking, smelling, feeling pain, using language, receiving rewards, having social interactions, and regulating your body's internal systems. Oh yes, and emotion too, sometimes. This laundry list is supported by thousands of brain-imaging experiments involving tens of thousands of test subjects. The last big myth is that areas of your brain "light up" or suddenly become active in response to events in the world. This is an incorrect view of brain activity that dates back to a 1952 study of — I'm not making this up — a piece of a brain cell from a dead giant squid. No human brain cell is ever dormant or switched off. Your whole brain is active all the time. Particular neurons may fire at faster and slower rates, but they're always in a flurry of activity, dashing off thousands of predictions of what you might encounter next and preparing your body to deal with it. This constant storm of predictions, which scientists call intrinsic brain activity, ultimately produces everything you think, feel, or perceive. The story of the switched-off brain is related to the biggest brain whopper of the 20th century, that humans use only 10 percent of their brain capacity. Fortunately, that myth is mostly dead now, except in Hollywood, which keeps churning out sci-fi movies like "Lucy" (2014) and "Limitless" (2011) based on this tired premise. Germany surrenders unconditionally - 1945![]() On this day in 1945, the German High Command, in the person of General Alfred Jodl, signs the unconditional surrender of all German forces, East and West, at Reims, in northwestern France.
At first, General Jodl hoped to limit the terms of German surrender to only those forces still fighting the Western Allies. But General Dwight Eisenhower demanded complete surrender of all German forces, those fighting in the East as well as in the West. If this demand was not met, Eisenhower was prepared to seal off the Western front, preventing Germans from fleeing to the West in order to surrender, thereby leaving them in the hands of the enveloping Soviet forces. Jodl radioed Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, Hitler’s successor, with the terms. Donitz ordered him to sign. So with Russian General Ivan Susloparov and French General Francois Sevez signing as witnesses, and General Walter Bedell Smith, Ike’s chief of staff, signing for the Allied Expeditionary Force, Germany was-at least on paper-defeated. Fighting would still go on in the East for almost another day. But the war in the West was over. Since General Susloparov did not have explicit permission from Soviet Premier Stalin to sign the surrender papers, even as a witness, he was quickly hustled back East-into the hands of the Soviet secret police, never to be heard from again. Alfred Jodl, who was wounded in the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944, would be found guilty of war crimes (which included the shooting of hostages) at Nuremberg and hanged on October 16, 1946-then granted a pardon, posthumously, in 1953, after a German appeals court found Jodl not guilty of breaking international law. Can You Believe It?Teen makes matching prom dress for dogMay 5 (UPI) -- A Florida teenager and her dog are a hit online after she used the leftover fabric from her prom dress to make a matching gown for the canine.
Brenda Sierra, 18, of Tampa, posted photos to Twitter showing her and her prom date, Rodney Sesler, posing with Sasha, a 7-year-old dog clad in a miniature version of Sierra's dress. Sierra said she obtained the leftover fabric from her tailor and it took her about two hours to use a glue gun to make a miniature version of the gown. "I'm a really big pet lover," she told InsideEdition.com. "I try to share every moment with her so I wanted to bring her with me to take pictures for prom. I wanted her to get dressed up and I had the extra fabric, so I made the dress for her." Sierra said Sasha wasn't allowed to attend prom, but she was there in spirit -- and on the phone. "During prom, everyone had already seen the pictures," Sierra said. "My Twitter was blowing up during prom, and then my mom would FaceTime me and put Sasha on the phone and I'm like, 'Mom, I can't talk right now, I'm at prom.'" Sierra said she is next planning to make Sasha a miniature cap and gown for graduation. Parenting...

BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants. BMCL Nature Adventure The BMCL and Waste Management are proud to announce a joint summer program: Nature Adventure!
