Community Volunteers Wanted........Bangor Elks Lodge #1106 is looking for a few community volunteers to assist us this Saturday May 18 at 9:00 AM. We will be doing some track repairs, replacing some ties, and shoring up the tracks so the Bangor Park Train is ready to operate by mid June. No experience necessary. Bring a shovel and join in the fun as we prepare for another season of free train rides for our community. By a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962 by the U.S. Congress, the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls as "Police Week, making this week from May 12 to May 18 this year's official police week. States and all Americans are urged to display flags at half-staff. 5 Great Ways to Relieve StressHere are five great ways to reduce tension, relieve stress and feel better. • Practice Yoga: Yoga is a powerful stress reliever as it combines the benefits of stretching, meditation, controlled breathing and exercise all in one package. It’s as simple as unfurling your yoga mat when stress runs high. While studios are easy to find these days, there are plenty of free videos you can find on YouTube when you need to de-stress on your own schedule and at home. • Play music: Music can reduce stress, particularly when you are the one playing it. The slim design of digital pianos, such as the PX-S1000, makes it possible to get the feel and sound of a grand piano in a compact design. And integrated Bluetooth audio lets you connect your device wirelessly to this particular model, so you can also kick back and relax and listen to your favorite music through its powerful stereo amplification system. • Laugh: Laughter reduces physical and mental tension. Even just smiling can trick you into feeling happier, so if the real laughter isn’t forthcoming, consider the old adage -- fake it ‘til you make it. • Take a hike: Spending time in nature can reduce stress, ease anxiety and boost feelings of happiness according to the American Heart Association. Just be sure you take along tools to help you navigate the trail and avoid bad weather. High-tech wearables, such as the Casio Pro Trek PRG650Y-1 watch, will keep both hands free for ease on the trail. • Tackle your to-do list: Is the source of your stress a growing to-do list? Pick an item, any item and tackle it today. You’ll feel so much better afterward.

Ways to Get Fit as a FamilyOne of the keys to encouraging children to develop health habits early is to make fitness a priority in the home. The great news is there are a variety of ways to lead an active lifestyle that are suitable for the whole family, including kids of all ages. 1. For younger children, search for events that allow baby strollers or that host a separate Fun Run for the kids. Shoe to try: Nike offers the Flex Experience, which features lightweight synthetic overlays. 4. Get outdoors: Explore a new hiking trail to make memories and enjoy stunning scenery. Cater to all family members by choosing the length and level of difficulty of the hike. Houck Speaks To PA Women's Club The May 6th meeting of the Pen Argyl Woman’s Club featured substitute guest speaker First Deputy District Attorney Terence Houck.
Attorney Houck, Northampton County’s first deputy district attorney and former Philadelphia police officer, is running for County District Attorney. Attorney Houck, who has worked under District Attorney John Morganelli since 2006, lauded Morganelli’s contributions to the NARCAN medication used to block the effects of opioids) project, the mental health court diversions, lower gang incidence, and the 2017 post conviction drug court. He spoke to the group specifically about the Slate Belt and attributed a lower level of crime to the sense of community. Problems facing the Slate Belt range from opioid issues to theft and lower level property crimes but, first and foremost is DUI (driving under the influence) making up 45% of all cases. Some questions from the audience touched on illegal immigrants, child/mental abuse, and cell phones/distracted driving which by itself makes up 85% of all cases. A drug task force newsletter was handed out at the conclusion of the meeting followed by discussion and refreshments. The Woman’s Club meets @ 7pm every first Monday of the month at St John Lutheran Church on Westbrook Avenue in Pen Argyl. The Club is always accepting new members. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Pennsylvania, and individuals who spend time outdoors should check themselves for ticks and be aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease and other tick-related ailments.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the first line of defense against Lyme is to take precautions in the outdoors by using insect repellent with DEET, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, checking for – and promptly and properly removing – any ticks, and showering shortly after exposure. If bitten, an individual should monitor the area for the next month. Symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, a bull’s eye rash may appear, and other symptoms that can be mistaken for viral infections, such as influenza or infectious mononucleosis. Pennsylvania has led the nation in confirmed cases of Lyme disease for three straight years. Last year, a $500,000 grant was provided to East Stroudsburg University (ESU) to allow all Pennsylvania residents to have ticks (found on them or a family member) tested for free by the university. The Tick Lab is located within the Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute at ESU. Click here to access the Tick Lab website with all the details. Warm Weather Weight Loss Blunders Blunder 1: Crash dieting: The thought of putting on a swimsuit may entice you to crash diet. Crash diets are not only unhealthy, they tend to slow metabolism, making it difficult for you to drop more than just a few pounds. Also, any weight you lose short-term will be regained as soon as you resume eating normally. It’s best to stick with your healthy lifestyle year-round. Have a bad day? That’s okay. Vow to get back on track the next day.
• Blunder 2: Ordering smoothies and frapps: When the weather turns hot, a blended drink can seem like an ideal morning or afternoon pick-me-up. However, those from coffee shops and convenience stores tend to be loaded with sugar and fat. A 16-ounce serving may have more than 200 calories and 50 grams of sugar. Quench cravings by ordering unsweetened or lightly sweetened iced coffee or tea or opt for a protein shake. • Blunder 3: Not watching alcohol intake: Alcoholic beverages can be very refreshing in warm weather, but even a light beer or white wine is more than 100 calories, and today’s popular sweet drinks like hard cider and wine coolers have as many 180 calories each. To avoid over-indulging, alternate one or two drinks with fizzy seltzer over ice and a lime wedge. • Blunder 4: Perspiring to lose: When you exercise in the heat, you may think you can feel the pounds melting off with each bead of sweat. And if you weigh yourself right before and after a workout, you may see a difference. The problem is as soon as you replace the fluids you’ve sweated out, you’ll see on the scale that you’ve lost little, if any, weight. Your best bet is to maintain a steady activity level every day so that you get at least 150 minutes of movement a week. Regular activity keeps your metabolism burning continually, even if you’re just walking inside an air-conditioned mall. (StatePoint) More tip visit leaf.nutrisystem.com. Learning More About Your SmartphoneUse a Paper Cup as an Amplifier
Are you trying to rock out to tunes from your Android or iPhone but its not quite loud enough and you don’t have a speaker nearby? Just place your smartphone in a dry and empty paper cup. You’ll be amazed by how much it increases the volume. Save your Battery with Black Wallpaper Change your background to black wallpaper and you will also save on battery life. A lot of a mobile device’s battery is used by lighting up the display. When less of the display is lit up, less power is used. Change Out Your App Icons Are you tired of the same old icons? There are a ton of apps available for switching out your icons for something more interesting. Just choose one that has a theme that suits your tastes and you are good to go. You can also completely customize by using your own images. Climate Change Affects our Trees The theory of evolution suggests species will adapt to changing environmental conditions over long periods of geologic time. But, instead of warming over a period of 1,000 years, the climate is changing faster due to human activity -- several degrees per 100 years. Due to the rate of climate change, the gradual natural selection of genetic traits that allow species to adapt and reproduce over time may not be enough to preserve the abundance of tree species in Pennsylvania.
Some tree species won’t be able to thrive here as the climate continues to change faster than the plants can adapt. Northern species like mountain maple, American beech, balsam fir, paper birch, and quaking aspen are especially at risk. Our climate may warm too quickly for these species to adapt before dying out. Yet, warming due to climate change is not the only threat to the commonwealth’s trees. Last year (2018), many areas of the state set records for rainfall. Scientists forecasted that the northeastern U.S. climate would become not only warmer, but wetter -- which is be proving to be true. Since 1991, heavy rain events have increased more than 30 percent when compared to the 1901-1960 period. Many Pennsylvania tree species do not thrive in continuous soggy conditions; and could significantly decline across the state over the long term. The American mountain ash is a species which may suffer double risk due to its northern habit and upland site preference. Given current climate trends and future considerations, it wouldn’t make much sense to plant northern/upland species. A more practical strategy would be to choose climate change-resilient trees to replace those we lose. Climate change-resilient trees for Pennsylvania should be southern tree species that tolerate or prefer wetter soil. Species meeting these criteria include: Sycamore, Hackberry, Boxelder, Eastern redbud Suitable trees for a warming climate, but well-drained sites include several oak and hickory varieties: Pin oak, Black oak, Shagbark hickory, Mockernut hickory. Other adaptable species likely to be climate change-resilient include: Slippery elm, Black gum, Shortleaf pine, Eastern hophornbeam Time To Share the Road As the weather continues to warm up, more and more Pennsylvanians will ride their bicycles on the roads.
Both motorists and bicyclists can work together to ensure everyone shares the road and gets home safely. Motorists and bicyclists have the right to use the roads in Pennsylvania and should work to maintain a 4-foot barrier between each other when passing. Motorists are allowed to overtake a bicycle in a no-passing zone, provided they leave a 4-foot clearance. You can learn more about Pennsylvania’s bicycle laws here. Blackfly Spraying in Northampton CountyThe Delaware and Lehigh rivers in Northampton County are among approximately 1,700 stream miles in 35 Pennsylvania counties that will undergo both aerial and backpack spraying by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to control black flies. The frequency will depend upon weather and biological conditions. Treatments cannot occur during periods of heavy rain or when water levels are high as these conditions lower the effectiveness of the treatment as well as significantly increase the cost of the control operations. DEP uses Bti, a naturally occurring bacterium, to treat the larval stage of four specific human pest black fly species. This bacterium degrades quickly in the environment and does not harm the aquatic ecosystem, birds, or other insects. DEP notifies county and local emergency management officials prior to any spraying activity. Helicopters can be seen flying over waterways and ground crews using backpack sprayers off bridges and wading in streams conducting control operations on behalf of DEP’s Black Fly Suppression Program. Anyone concerned at the sight of helicopter or ground personnel is encouraged to call their county emergency management office to verify that a black fly treatment is taking place in their area on that day. "Weona Park Prepares for Weona 100"Pen Argyl Borough is pleased to announce upcoming celebrations to mark the 100th Anniversary of Weona Park. The Borough requests volunteers, personal stories from Community for “Weona 100.” A joint committee of borough officials and residents are planning a weekend of “Weona 100” festivities and activities on June 19-20, 2020. The Weona 100 committee will be active through the year leading up to the centennial celebration weekend with events at the borough’s Founder’s Day, held at the Park in June 2019, and the Lookout Fire Company Labor Day parade in September 2019. A commemorative booklet and accompanying calendar will also be published detailing the history of the park. The committee is seeking community volunteers to assist with and serve as actors on the float as well as to pen personal accounts of their times at Weona Park for the booklet. “The booklet and calendar will highlight the fun times of past and present at Weona. We want to involve as many community members as we can in this and honor the origins of Weona Park,” said Borough Councilwoman and Weona 100 Chair Roberta Cowley. “Any community service organization, scout group, school group or other interested party is invited to be a part of Weona 100.” Photos and stories of Weona Park memories can be submitted to the by contacting the committee organizers or through the Weona 100 – Weona Park Centennial Celebration Facebook page. Weona Park, founded in June 1920, was built through the collaborative efforts of many townspeople. The approximately 19-acre park is located on Route 512 in Pen Argyl. Today, Weona Park features a historic Dentzel carousel in addition to a miniature golf course, basketball court, skate park, baseball field, band shell, pavilions and playground. Many community events are celebrated at the park, from Easter egg hunts to summer carnivals, concerts and school rallies among others. For more information about the Weona Park 100th Anniversary plans, contact Roberta Cowley at 484-695-2994 or email [email protected] Emrick Lauds Support for Senior Center Here’s proof of truth in advertising – the commercial that states “the Pennsylvania Lottery benefits older Pennsylvanians” is true. The Slate Belt Senior Center is receiving a more than $112,000 grant, according to state Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Northampton).
“Pennsylvania’s senior centers provide a myriad of services for our citizens throughout the day,” he said. “I’m glad to see the center in Bangor is receiving the 2nd-largest of the nearly 50 grants being distributed statewide.” The Pennsylvania Department of Aging is distributing the grants, which are funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery. The Slate Belt Senior Center is located at 707 American Bangor Road, and provides services such hot meals, transportation, health and wellness checks and income tax assistance. Questions about this or any legislative issue should be directed to Emrick’s district office at (610) 588-8011 or (610) 746-5090 Get a Great Lawn in Less TimeZero-turn mowers can help you get yard work done faster. It’s no secret that your home’s exterior gets the spotlight during the summer. If “old reliable” isn’t cutting the lawn as well as it used to and you’re searching for a new mower, there are many makes and models to consider. One type you may be less familiar with is the zero-turn mower, which offers superior maneuverability and can get yard work done faster than a standard walk-behind mower. When shopping around, consider the following tips and insights: Don’t Shop With Your Wallet You’ll want something that can withstand the test of time and is backed by warranty. Keep in mind engine size and horsepower. Powerful engines cut grass faster and last longer, but also cost more. Size Matters The size of the area you’ll be cutting matters most. • A larger deck speeds up mowing and is ideal for big properties with wide open areas of grass. • The wider the cutting deck, the more grass cut with each pass. If you need to maneuver through tight spaces or have a small yard, consider a machine with a condensed, more easily-controlled mowing deck. • Zero-turn mowers made for residential use are typically much smaller than the average ride-on mower. For a compact option at a great value, consider the DASH by Hustler Turf. Built to the brand’s high standards, it has a patented automatic park brake, foot-operated deck lift and the ability to fit through most gates, making it a good choice for front and backyard mowing. Mow in Comfort You’ll use this machine regularly for years to come, so prioritize comfort. Remember, the open-concept of a zero-turn allows you to get on and off easily. Be sure to sit on each mower and look at the seats and support offered. Shop Local Consider visiting locally-owned and operated lawn care centers. More information on zero-turn mowers can be found at hustlerturf.com.
