Calling people crazy, OCD or psycho can hurt

It's amazing how clean and organized your friend's house is. You tell him he's "so OCD." After a long day at work, your mood swings from frustration to giddiness and your partner asks you "to stop being bipolar." Schizo. Psycho. Manic. Crazy. Anxious. Depressed. Many people use psychiatric labels to put others down, perpetuating stigma around mental health. "When we are tossing about these words to describe other behaviors, it can make people who have these disorders feel very diminished," said Scott Bea, a clinical psychologist at the Center of Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic. "It can trivialize mental health." People often use such labels as shorthand or a way to better understand something that seems complex. You don't understand why your girlfriend dumped you? It's easier to call her a psycho. " Reducing someone by saying 'my ex is a psychopath' that is meant to be mean. That is not meant to help," said Sarah Petersen, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Also, using a psychiatric term to describe a certain behavior — cleanliness is OCD, for example — makes it seem as if everyone with the disorder acts the same way. This makes it difficult to people to understand and recognize mental health conditions. "It is an oversimplification of something that is really complex. No two people who have bipolar are going to seem the same," Bea said. More than a condition At the same time, it reduces a person to a condition, instead of being a person who has a condition — among other traits."There is more to them than just the illness, more than 'I am OCD' or 'I am schizophrenic,'" Bea said. When these labels are used casually, people may not admit they are experiencing mental health problems. "The misuse of psychiatric illness perpetuates stigmas and makes people less willing to talk about issues and seek help," Pedersen said. The stigma is often why people don't seek treatment, said Patrick Corrigan, distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois Technical Institute and head of the National Consortium on Stigma and Empowerment. While being careful about the terms we use, it's equally important to be open about mental illness. People feel less stigma toward people with mental health problems the more they interact with people experiencing them, said Corrigan. "Putting a focus on language really makes it look a lot easier than it is," Corrigan said. "Changing stigma is a lot harder and a lot bigger than that." Having conversations about mental health led by people living with conditions can be a powerful way in helping people feel less misinformed and scared about them. "The degree to which people come out with their mental illness will really tear down stigma," Corrigan said.

Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 19Smart launches microcar - 2007 Los Angeles, California, is the first stop on a cross-country road show launched on this day in 2007 by Smart USA to promote the attractions of its “ForTwo” microcar, which it had scheduled for release in the United States in 2008. In the early 1990s, Nicholas Hayek of Swatch, the company famous for its wide range of colorful and trendy plastic watches, went to German automaker Mercedes-Benz with his idea for an “ultra-urban” car. The result of their joint venture was the diminutive Smart (an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART) ForTwo, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997 and went on sale in nine European countries over the next year. Measuring just over eight feet from bumper to bumper, the original ForTwo was marketed as a safe, fuel-efficient car that could be maneuvered easily through narrow, crowded city streets. Despite its popularity among urban Europeans, Smart posted significant losses, and Swatch soon pulled out of the joint venture. Undaunted, Mercedes maker DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler AG) launched the Smart ForTwo in Canada in 2004 as an initial foray into the North American market. In June 2006, DaimlerChrysler chairman Dieter Zetsche announced that the Smart would make its U.S. debut in early 2008. Between 2003 and 2006, as reported by the German newspaper Handelsblatt, DaimlerChrysler took a loss of some 3.9 billion euros (around $5.2 billion) on the Smart brand, and the company looked to the U.S. market as a way to bring the brand into profitability. The cross-country road show that began in May 2007 allowed consumers in 50 cities nationwide to test-drive the ForTwo. On each stop on the tour, a large truck served as a mobile exhibit dedicated to the microcar, complete with interactive displays and virtual demonstrations. As Dave Schembri, president of Smart USA, put it: “The Smart ForTwo is all about urban independence and freeing people from the constraints of city driving.” Under normal driving conditions, the ForTwo was designed to achieve 40 plus miles per gallon. The show was presumably a success: By September 2007, according to an article in MarketWatch, Smart USA said it had already received more than 30,000 registrations from potential buyers. The FortTwo went on sale in the United States in January 2008, at prices ranging from around $12,000 to around $21,000. "Amp Up the Art" Art in the Park On May 20, 2017, Forks Area Art Society is holding its fourth annual "Amp up the Art", Art in the Park. This outdoor event will be at Forks Township Community Center Amphitheater. Local artists and crafters will sell and display their work under tents, with live music to enjoy, and food vendors. Scheduled to perform are the band The Blues Professors, singer Hiedi Ott, and guitarist Wayne Scott Farley. Amp up the Art will also feature an interactive Art Tent for Adults and Kids sponsored by Bushkill Park. There will be a raffle for a 50" TV, sponsored by Farmer's Insurance. Free coffee will be offered for the first 100 guests of the event. Amp up the Art is designed to promote awareness of the arts and foster relationship with Forks Area Art Society and the community. From its inception seven years ago, the group's driving energy is to have fun with art. Artists and art enthusiasts alike are welcome. Members utilize conventional mediums such as oils, watercolors, and acrylics, as well as mediums like colored pencils, poetry, writing, wood turning, stained glass, wax art, and jewelry making. Diverse creativity at all levels is our focus. Original Art and handmade crafts will be available for sale. A selection of artists will be demonstrating their mediums. Enjoy a spring day of art for the whole family, with food and music to add to the fun.

Slate Belt Futures exhibit
Slate Belt Futures exhibit will be on display at the Slate Belt Heritage Center, May 14 to June 4th. Design students from the University of Pennsylvania visited the Slate Belt during the fall semester of 2016 and completed projects that re-purpose former industrial sites for future use. The plans show many parts of the Slate Belt and consider safe and innovative uses for familiar places. The sites include quarries, flood plains, fens, railroad beds, and other areas in Slate Belt municipalities. In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. He also has a Masters degree in Educational Psychology and a Masters Equivalent in Strategic Studies. The Roper Quartet will render musical selections. Tanner Barr and Gianna Greggo, both students at Pen Argyl High School, will give recitations of “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” Walter Cole and Kyle Schmidt will play “Taps” in honor of deceased service men and women. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
