President Reagan Shot - 1981
On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by a deranged drifter named John Hinckley Jr. The president had just finished addressing a labor meeting at the Washington Hilton Hotel and was walking with his entourage to his limousine when Hinckley, standing among a group of reporters, fired six shots at the president, hitting Reagan and three of his attendants. White House Press Secretary James Brady was shot in the head and critically wounded, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy was shot in the side, and District of Columbia policeman Thomas Delahaney was shot in the neck. After firing the shots, Hinckley was overpowered and pinned against a wall, and President Reagan, apparently unaware that he’d been shot, was shoved into his limousine by a Secret Service agent and rushed to the hospital.
After being arrested on March 30, 1981, 25-year-old John Hinckley was booked on federal charges of attempting to assassinate the president. He had previously been arrested in Tennessee on weapons charges. In June 1982, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. In the trial, Hinckley’s defense attorneys argued that their client was ill with narcissistic personality disorder, citing medical evidence, and had a pathological obsession with the 1976 film Taxi Driver, in which the main character attempts to assassinate a fictional senator. His lawyers claimed that Hinckley saw the movie more than a dozen times, was obsessed with the lead actress, Jodie Foster, and had attempted to reenact the events of the film in his own life. Thus the movie, not Hinckley, they argued, was the actual planning force behind the events that occurred on March 30, 1981.
The verdict of “not guilty by reason of insanity” aroused widespread public criticism, and many were shocked that a would-be presidential assassin could avoid been held accountable for his crime. We are looking for scientists, college students, naturalists and interested volunteers to help conduct an intensive field study at Jacobsburg over a 24 hour time period. Registration is required.

Antiques Appraisal and Silent Auction
The Blue Mountain Community Library will hold its 3rd Antiques Appraisal and Silent Auction Event on Friday, April 7, 2017, from 5:30-8:00 PM at Slate Belt Nazareth Baptist Church, 1620 Church Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. The antiques appraisals will be conducted by licensed auctioneers Lori Biechy of Lori Biechy Auctions, Christian Answini of Saucon Valley Auction Co., and Les and Ginny Beyer, all who are generously donating their time and expertise. In addition to the appraisals, the event will feature a Silent Auction of over 50 items, including Baskets and Gift Cards, donated by a large number of area businesses. Barbecue, hot dogs, other food items, and beverages will be for sale. For food purchase and auction participation, cash and checks will be accepted.
Appraisal tickets for the evening are available at the library (216 South Robinson Avenue in Pen Argyl) during regular business hours (M-Sa 10AM-12PM and M-Th 6-8PM) or may be purchased at the Door. Please call the library in advance to make a reservation. Admission to participate in the event is Free. The cost to bring one item for appraisal is $10 and two items is $15. Suggested appraisal items include collectibles, militaria, silver, comic books, early toys, sports memorabilia, quilts, coins, primitives, musical instruments. Driver Fined For Driving Through Narrow Opening
(UPI) -- A British driver was filmed trying to squeeze her car through a gap that turned out to be just a mite too small for a good fit. The video shows a car attempting to leave a parking lot in Gravesend, England, by squeezing between two brick posts at the ends of fences.

Bangor Womens Club GFWC Scholarship
The Bangor Womens Club GFWC is offering a $1000 scholarship for a senior student from Bangor High School or Faith Christian School. Students interested in applying for this scholarship may obtain an application from the school guidance office. Applicants must be planning to begin their college education in September. The deadline to submit applications is April 15, 2017.

BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship
A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.
Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School.

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers
The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. If you have a musical instrument that is gathering dust, and you want to make a difference in a child’s life, call 610-588-5198. We will pick them up or tell you where you can drop them off. Have you ever considered opening a business … in a truck? Food trucks are all the rage now, but mobile businesses go beyond that. Northampton Community College has a new workshop for entrepreneurs who are interested in the mobile business trend “other than food.”
Participants in the Mobile Retail Business workshop will gain a good grasp on how to start out in the business, including learning the laws, licensing, risks, and financing associated with the mobile retail industry. Topics include start-up methods, capital required, marketing success, finding a niche market, booking the right venues, truck build-out guidelines, maintenance issues, and networking opportunities. You’ll learn all you need to know to decide if a mobile retail business is right for you! Instructor Dean McBride owns and operates the mobile business XXtreme Simsations, a mobile firearms simulator that provides a safe and exciting environment to learn firearms safety, skills and proficiency.

Citizen's Police Academy
Slate Belt Regional Police Department is proud to announce their FIRST Citizen's Police Academy, which will run every Thursday, from April 6th - May 25th, 7pm-9pm. The goal of the police academy is to familiarize community members with the inner workings of their local police department and judicial system, as well as forging relationships between the department, officers and the community for which they serve. Writing in a style she describes as in the lyrical tradition of Virginia Woolf and Harriet Doerr, Joyce Hinnefeld is a Moravian College professor and acclaimed author of acclaimed fiction, poetry and essays.
She will give a reading from her novel In Hovering Flight, followed by an audience discussion and afternoon tea, on Monday, April 10, 2:30 p.m. at Northampton Community College (NCC), Bethlehem Campus in College Center, Room 114. Admission is free.
The novel is about a woman, Addie’s visit to her dying mother, a famous bird artist and “infamous” environmentalist. During the visit, Addie comes to peace with her mother’s complicated life and reveals a secret that has haunted her own life. The Washington Post called the novel “as quiet as twilight and as lovely.”
Hinnefeld received graduate degrees from Northwestern University and the State University of New York at Albany. She is the author of fiction, poetry and nonfiction. She is a professor at Moravian College.

Meet The Authors of Letters to Homefront
What began as a treasure trove find of over 4000 letters, postcards and
v-mails has culminated in the publishing of the Slate Belt Heritage Center’s latest book: Letters to Homefront Magazine: A Love Story Between a Community and Its WWII Soldiers. On Thursday, April 20, 2017 @ 7:00 PM, the Heritage Center will hold its monthly historic presentation entitled: “Meet the Authors”. Present will be: Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Deanna Ruzanski and Karen Brewer co-authors of the book along with the volunteer readers who assisted in bringing this story to fruition. It was a project that has been 15 years in the making since the finding of the letters and was finally put into forward motion as of October 2015. It has now blossomed into a total “Labor of Love”. The authors will be present to relate their journey throughout the process and answer questions.
On display, in the Chamber Showcases, will be “Homefront and World War II Memorabilia”. Distribution and book signing will be on Sunday April 23rd, at the Heritage Center from 9 -12 Noon. Main character in the book, Linnet, is owner of a Bed and Breakfast in Mountain Springs, Pennsylvania and her life has been a bit complicated lately. Hundreds of snow geese die overnight in the dam near the B&B, sparking a media frenzy, threatening the tourist season and bringing her estranged younger sister to town. A mystery evolves as a result of this occurrence and the sisters confront each other in a hidden past.

First Round of JazzFest 2017 Events
Performing Arts Live released the first portion of the Allentown JazzFest 2017 schedule. The program has broadened to include live spoken word and conversation performances, and will introduce new musical styles into JazzFest. Consistent with prior years, a large majority of the overall schedule will be free to the public. JazzFest opens on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes Sunday, May 7, 2017.
Today’s announcements are the first of a group of performer announcements that will stretch over the next three weeks. It is expected there will be 6 or 7 additional performances to be announced.
All the 2017 events will occur in the Hamilton Street downtown area between 9th and 5th Streets, except for one event in Emmaus. The schedule can be viewed and tickets can be purchased through allentownjazzfest.org.

Fundraiser for BAHS Band Member
A fundraiser to benefit Bangor band member Elizabeth Goffinet's AMA trip to Europe to represent the band will be held at the Bangor Elks Sunday, May 7 from 4-8pm. Tickets include food and drinks, entertainment, 50/50 sold the day of the event.Tickets are $20.00
They are looking for businesses who would like to donate items for a raffle as well.
AMA is the American Music Abroad. It is comprised of musicians from High Schools from PA and New Yotk and are recommended by the school Band Director
They need to raise over $5,000 to pay for the trip, so this event will help offset those costs.

The Bangor Elementary School PTO third annual GLOW SLATERS GLOW Neon 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday May 13 at the Bangor Area School District Complex. The 5K run begins at 9:00am, the Fun Run/Walk begins at 9:15am. There will be five splatter stations.
